Her father killed her once he allowed the procedure to be done on her brain...because she had strong personality and wouldn't listen to anyone and was on her father's way to political gain....and an embarrassment for her famous family. Also, after all that, abandoned her for many years ignoring her well being and not even visiting her for many years....sad Rosemary,sad life.😔

Just curious....was that nurse present at Rosemary's birth ever identified? IMHO she should have been sought out and tried in court for what she did to what was most likely a perfect child. She ruined Rosemary. Joe Kennedy just finished her off.

Sarah Sankey,. My distain is solely for the Kennedy men. Joe Kennedy and his sons John and Robert were horrible womanizers. They flaunted their affairs in front of their wives. Joe had his daughter lobotomized to keep her from tarnishing the family name. He did this without his wife's knowledge. It went horribley wrong. John Kennedy had Jackie committed for a week and shock treatments were given to her. Why? Because she dared to stand up for herself and say it's not ok for him to sleep with other women. She learned her lesson and became the perfect little wife.

brian denton, that's just it. You can't judge past medical practices by today's standards or technology. It's a horrific and tragic story, but at the time, it was an option that was labeled risky but possibly effective. A hundred years from now, probably less, some of OUR time's practices may be viewed the same way.
@sjpavur
@sjpavur 6 жыл бұрын
brian denton A lot of the blame must be placed on her father, as he was the one who made all the decisions for the family, and ruled with an iron fist. He was afraid she might become pregnant, hence several of his decisions.
@sjpavur
@sjpavur 6 жыл бұрын
Brandy Nettleton But the lobotomy was normally attempted on patients with psychiatric conditions, not typically those with mental retardation. Kennedy thought his daughter was getting too promiscuous, and might become pregnant out of wedlock, which would have been devastating to the family's well crafted political image, so he convinced the doctor to try the procedure.

I read she was acting out sexually so Joe was appalled and had her shut down for life. Being familiar with special needs people, this is an issue, but there are absolutely thoughtful and humane ways to help not only special needs, but people without actual diagnosed issues with their sexual problems - even then - but Joe was Joe and he felt she wouldn’t be able to live a normal life anyway, so he just controlled it like he controlled everything else. Horrible man. Side note: JFK Jr., was appalled by his dad’s and grandfather’s and uncles’ abhorrent behavior toward women. He was different. So different...

I've read some differing accounts about Rosemary. While she may have been a bit developmently delayed as a child she is reported to have been beautiful, charming, and lively. As she grew into a young woman she became violent on occasion. Just being an armchair phycologist, I think she would be diagnosed with Bipolar depression. She could have had as close to a normal life as anyone. Her father made the decision and approved the lobotomy without consulting his wife. Rosemary was a bit of a "free spirit" and her father was afraid she would discrace the family. Lobotomies were new and the side effects weren't well known. The hype was that lobotomies would make patients docile and easy to handle.

I wonder if she (the author) visited St. Colletta hospital and clinic and searched the records or spoke with the staff to ascertain more of the story? Or is this just from the Kennedy transcripts?

The nurse at a hospital in Sterling Kansa did the same thing to my mother she wanted the Dr to deliver the baby. It was my Moms 7th child. She told the nurse she would kill her when she kept my brother from being born. Mom was strapped down so she could not stop them. My brother thankfully was OK.

How can a parent do that to their child it beggars belief, she was a special gift & they had the means to take care of her my god preforming a lobotomy on her in her full senses is absolutely horrendous no wonder The Kennedys had no luck Joe Kennedy had great plans for his sons & nothing would get in his way of that, Rest easy Rosemary ❤

That nurse that probably caused the oxygen deprivation during Rosemary’s birth should be held accountable - now. Her name should not be withheld from the public, who deserve to know this nurse’s thoughts during the birth. Her family would know.

It makes me terribly sad. But to be honest Joe was more interested in furthering his sons careers, which in that era is what most fathers were prone to do. Unfortunatley they did not see her potential and Rose being a dutiful wife really had no say. And even if she did, she was very overwhelmed with raising the other children. It is still a very sad and and poinant situation.

My grandmother was such a "good dutiful catholic wife", too but when it came to her babies, she was a lioness. She once threatened an older male relative with a kitchen knife because he slapped her daughter (my aunt) for being in the way. She loved my grandfather dearly but if he had had even thought about having one of their children lobotomized, she would have murdered him on the spot. There is no excuse for what Rose Kennedy allowed to be done to her daughter, absolutely none.

No way! At 2.10 in and I'm already appalled at the untruths spoken by this "author." Rosemary Kennedy was not intellectually disabled. Period. She had issues later in her teen years, but as a child, she absolutely was not disabled in any way. She was quiet and also bubbly at most times, but the growing pains that all experience, were more severe for Rosemary and I'd absolutely bet my lifetime experience on the fact that Rosemary's Doctors misdiagnosed her. She may have been bipolar or even manic depressive, or as most think, extreme mood swings on her normal child to teen to young woman developmental changes. It's an absolute shame and tragic with the outcome of what happened to Rosemary. She was very intelligent and may have even been borderline autistic, but disabled and a lobotomy was a cruel, dangerous and extreme act of madness of the person who recommended it and the parents for allowing it. Allegedly Joe gave permission to the Doctors to go ahead without his wife's knowledge and had told her over the phone. And to say it was "somewhat" successful is ridiculous too. As she was left almost in an "almost" vegetative state, yet also understood and communicated rather well. It's absolutely absurd and abhorrent what was done to poor Rosemary, just to shhh her up and to keep the Kennedys name in good standing.

Rosemary wasn’t the only child that ended up instutionalized; not an excuse but definitely an explanation. They just didn’t know back then, what they know now, about people with intellectual disabilities etc. I knew an older lady that had her legs held together “until the doctor arrived” and she too had a very disabled son because of it. In the natural order of things , they SHOULD have just known not to do that, but they didn’t. And men being so dominant at the time, women were afraid of doing anything against a Doctors orders … And it’s tragic that some men, even today, have decided they still know what’s best for a woman and her pregnancy..

Don't be too harsh on the Kennedy siblings for covering it up. Their dad had such power over them, if they were to really rebel he might ruin them. I think that while they loved and respected Joe, they also feared him quite a bit.

The obstetric nurse could've delivered Rose Mary. That was horrible and Rose should've prevented this.Joseph was horrible in allowing his daughter to have a lobotomy. She was never allowed to live from the beginning. Her life was ruined across the board. Horrible parents. That's my opinion.

Weren’t midwives used in those days to deliver babies? Why would the nurse push her back into the birth canal to wait for the doctor to arrive? She should’ve just let her come out naturally and cut the umbilical cord herself! Why would she have to wait for the doctor to get there? The nurse is guilty of cutting off Rosemary’s air supply and causing damage to her brain! Not to mention that it was Rose’s first born child, which probably affected her emotionally and physically too. Irish Catholics had very large families back then because of the Bible saying “go forth and prosper and populate the earth” but they never took into account how it affected the mother or the many siblings that had to go without being taken care of as well as they could have if their parents had less children. Religion ruins everything. Add politics to it and it makes it that much worse. I’m glad I live in a day and age of modern science and technology and didn’t have to grow up in the dark ages of history in this country. America has a very dark secret past that we’re just finding out about in the last few decades.
