How to Reverse a Brushless Motor RC Basics
Follow along in this video as I demonstrate a super easy, and completely safe method to reverse the rotation direction of any brushless electric motor.
This is a great discussion for beginners of RC basics.
The way to reverse the motor direction is to simply sway out any two of the three electrical wires from the electronic speed controller (ESC) to the motor. There is no polarity with these three motor wires. Just sway any two and the motor reverses its direction of rotation.
One danger, and something you should NOT DO is to try and reverse the motor's rotation direction by using the "Reverse" function of a computer transmitter. The transmitter reverse function will simply reverse the input of the throttle stick, i.e. throttle control full down, which is normally idle, will now be full power. This could truly take a modeler by surprise as the brushless motor suddenly goes into full power should you take this approach.

Question:...Tim, is there an on line compatibility chart or math formula you follow to find ........ motor size and ESC .......ESC and battery ........ motor / ESC and prop...etc.. thanks much for another helpful informational video .....

Gary: That is a good question. I am not sure of any "one stop" chart for these matters. Instead, usually the ESC manufacturer has a chart for number of cells and servos that the ESC can handle. I usually "round up" if there is any doubt, i.e. go from a Talon 15 to a 25 if the motor has a bit more pull. But tech info on the ECS is most helpful. Finally, the tech support guys at www.HorizonHobby.com are very good at answering these sorts of questions. Chat function works well. Tim

Always a clear explanation of how to..... Thank you. 3 things; 1 When changing the servo settings, REMOVE THE PROP(S)!!!! 2 Reversing the throttle does NOT reverse the motor direction. 3 Why does reversing two wires change the motor direction? Because the motor "fires" in the direction of the sequential pules sent to the motor. If you write 1 2 3 1 2 3 A B C A B C The motor fires in the A-B-C direction. Now switch two wires say "A" and "B" the order becomes: 1 2 3 1 2 3 B A C B A C Notice the order becomes "C - B - A" and the motor runs in the opposite direction. This is not original to me but the best explanation of why changing two wires reverses the motor direction.

Thanks for an informative video. Another question Tim. Do you know of a way to reverse a brushless motor (i.e. the 2 ESC to motor wires) using RC to say drive a relay?

Good morning Maybe you made a video on connecting two motors on an airplane... On a twin electric engine, the ESCs must be connected together on a single channel? The left motor should turn left and the right motor should turn right? And should we put torque and thrust on the motors? I imagine that the propellers also have two directions. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

Hello, thanks for the video. What does it mean if the motor spins left up to 20% throttle. When i increase to 20% to 100% throttle, the motor spins reverse.

Go into the seting from your Mezon and switch invert the rotation direction of your Controller.

I have a question Hope you can answer for me I am finding it hard to locate some electrics for small craft especially brushed set up Have you ever used a brushless/micro 1S system Receiver/motor/servo's in your Guillow builds? I know many use brushed motors and electronics for 1S, like in the Champ or Sport Cub, have you used the 1S brushless before? Thanks in advance

Ed: As not too many people purchase the smaller motors for home builds (as they are used mostly for RTF models), I have not located any real micro brushless motors. what happens if we control the main motor using right side stick (bidirectional) channel 1 or 2? Does the motor spin in opposite direction if we pull the stick down?

It is possible to set transmitter with throttle on the right side (Mode 1). This has no effect on motor rotation direction. To change brushless motor direction simply swap any two of the three motor wires. Tim

Brushless dc fan motors . Something about changing 2 or 3 wires but difficult to get access to board.

@@TimMcKay56 wanted bearings for front wheels of RC car I'm sabotaging other Thrift store toys for pre teens but to use motors, need one going clockwise. I got it apart but it will never go back together. I don't resolder mini ICs either. Will keep destroying till I'm an expert. Local RC store has no brushless motors? It is a Mustang with double tires all around = 8. Helicopter in back window. Total of 8 motors. The project keeps me from spending time wisely on much more important inventions.
