RC Plane Decals for Newbies!
Decals are a quick and easy way to add text, numbers and graphic images to your RC plane. With any home computer and a graphics program (Keynote, PowerPoint, Photoshop, etc.) you can easily make these graphics, size them to your RC model airplane and print out on special water slide decal water paper for application on your model.
The decal paper and clear spray sealer can be purchased on Amazon or our local craft store.
The video covers the key differences between transparent and solid white decal paper, and the effect of a light or dark background for the decal. I use transparent decal paper for the majority of my work. The video shows an excellent demonstration on a yellow and dark blue background.
Finally, the video shows a neat trick on using a white background (plastic iron on covering or trim Monokote) under a transparent decal needing white coloring.

I have had problems with the decal paper having severe tight curling at the edges. I contacted the manuf, and they said the paper has a one year time usage. Have you ever experienced this? Also, I have tried decal solutions on this method of decals. And it wrinkles and ruins the decal. Have you experienced this also?

David: I have not had this problem. Maybe try a new brand of water slide decal paper. Amazon has ratings, look for a higher rating. Be sure to let the decal soak a bit. When dry, apply a light mist/spray of the clear sealant. Tim

So do you think slide decals are best for balsa mono coated planes...when using electric i think it should stay on well...but i guess coating it after its applied will make sure..thanks for sharing.

Just wanted to let you know that I subscribed. I have been looking for answers to this question for about a week and having trouble coming up with some concise information. Your presentation made me think yeah. I'm going to have decals for my P-51D 3D printed aircraft. It would not be a Mustang without those decals and nose art. You just fix that for me for good. I will be investing in a printer.

great video! Cricut vinyl cutters will do Print and Cut so you can cut those decals tight to the image allowing the use of white backing a bit easier.

Thanks for the tutorial! I just got a Volantex F4U Corsair and wanted to add engine and cockpit decals to it for a more scale appearance. I do have a washer at the front of the nose inside the cowling and am wondering if these will stick to aluminum. If not I’ll just print it out on regular paper and double tape it on for a temporary solution hahaha

Hi Tim, I have a short question for you: have you ever used Microset and Microsol on water-slide decals for RC models painted with water-soluble acrylic paint (that you buy from Michaels)? People that are in 1/48 scale plastic models use these two to apply decals on airplanes very successfully. I had been masking the plane before I spray the roundels (or other insignia), but I have found this method is both risky and long. Acrylic paint is the cheapest variety you can find for artwork, and it is quite cost effective for electric RC airplanes. Thanks a bunch.
