Well done! Great overview of a tracking generator. I am trying to revive an HP8444A tracking generator for my HP8568B Spectrum Analyzer, and it works off the same principle. But building your own has so much more educational value!

Thank you. Excellent explanation.... even though I now realize how truly RF/EE clueless I am. 🙄🤣 Thankfully, all of my spectrum analyzers I have came with the TG option. I started with a Triarchy Tech 6GHz SA (USB);with separate vector signal generator (USB as well) but this was way too cumbersome to use to tune duplexers / cavities / filters for 2-way radio use. I then moved “up”(?) to a Rigol DSA815tg, but wanted to be able to handle 2.4GHz WiFi and moved to an Agilent n9340b (up to 3GZz) . I just bought an HP 8591c (also has CATV personality installed) spectrum analyzer w/ pre-amp and TG options. They had another unit there.. but, no TG. I was contemplating getting it and using your video as a start to adding an external TG. The HP was purchased because I am donating a bunch of radio gear to a good cause (local volunteer fire department) and want to give them test and service gear as well. They have a bunch of current and retired hymns as well as a few commercial radio service techs who will handle the service for free. Oh well, thanks again. I’ll be back once I get the parts squared away. The Chinese CCP-Virus permits much spare time nowadays. 😷🦠🤣 🇺🇸 73 👍🏻

Nice work, I cheated with my 8568B and bought an 8444A :) Your a talented guy, and the workmanship on the hardware looks really neat. Thanks for sharing this.

Hi I just built your tracking generator the hi freq one1000mhz to4200mhz if works good but I'm having problems with the 321.4 mhz oscillator I'm using a old wavtek 3001.I would like to build a good voltage tuned 321.4 mhz oscillator or buy one do you have any good circuit's for one?or do you no of one that would work the output should be around -10 dbm sign wave. Please write back. Allan pierron 73's N8zhc

You'll have to order it off the Mini-Circuits website
