That butter thing? Brings back a wonderful memory. We lined up, a friend and I....years ago, for a free food give away day, at a housing project. It was a one time give out, and we showed them my SS# card. Walked away with a huge block of excellent Cheddar cheese, a similar sized bar of the type of butter Ms. Chase is speaking about..and some other things. But I CLEARLY remember that butter..and this was 1985?? Mercy!!

I am from a family of 11 in western Michigan. At 10 years old I went to the movies for the first time and to my great delight, I realized that not all popcorn tasted like bacon. At the back of our stove was the obligatory can of crisco that now held bacon fat and lard. Crisco was kept for special occasions. Never met you Mrs. Chase, but I think you would have appreciated my mom.

In 2008, I had the great pleasure of meeting Leah Chase while dining at Dooky Chase Restaurant. What a wonderful woman. She radiated joy and happiness, and to be in her presence was uplifting and unforgettable.
