Gravel cycling is a lot of fun regardless of what speed you're riding. But, despite this, everyone wants to cycle a little bit faster, don't they? Regardless of how fast you ride, aerodynamics play a huge part in speed - better aerodynamics let you ride your bike faster and further! With this in mind, Ridley have released the Ridley Kanzo Fast. Only 4 watts slower than their dedicated aero road bike, the Noah Fast, this might well be the fastest gravel bike in the world.

Exactly the quandary I have now. I have mountain bike I don't really use apart from the odd gravel path or benign Forrest lane. I want a new road bike was thinking of the TcR Advance pro with built in power meters. But also want to do some light touring next year, and only have money for one big upgrade. Argh... Also just watch Wales in one day on the TCR that can take 32mm tires. What do I go for

For saying things like "x 'Watts' faster" in public one should be banned from any public appearances for life! Even though power is a product of force multiplied by speed, speed is still measured in distance devided by time (meters per second or kilometers per hour)! "X Watts faster" is coming from the same idiots claiming "so aero, you save x seconds when going at x speed for one hour". No idea about basic science? Get a job in marketing.

The Sachs 3x7 and DualDrive systems that were around 20+ years ago worked well, although they were heavy compared to a front derailleur. I love that every manufacturer is aiming for a sort of fast Allrounder - bike. Love the option for mudguards. I hope for a more 80/20 towards a road spec version of this (this seems to be more on the gravel side of fast). As much as I admire real race mashines, the majority of everyday riders I think will have more usecase for an „all bike-path“ tarrain kind of bike, from commutes to weekend tour guys. Had the OPEN M.IND in my head For a next Allrounder, but this could be a successor

You can’t chance anything, because the bike is not made for personal options. You can’t change the bar, you can’t change the stem, you can’t change the seat post and so on. Next big minus IN MY OPINION is that you can’t choose it with two chainrings. All in all i think i go with the new 2021 Kanzo Fast. For me it’s better to have options in changing things...

Great channel, great videos! Quick question to which I cannot get a straight answer... if a gravel bike is a cross between a road bike and a mountain bike, what is a hybrid bike? I've been told countless times that a hybrid bike "isn't the coolest bike out there" because it's a cross between a road bike and a mountain bike, but a gravel bike is great because it's a cross between a road bike and a mountain bike. So... what is the difference between a gravel bike and a hybrid bike? My best guess is it seems that the hybrid bike is set up closer to a mountain bike, typically with a suspension front fork, often a suspension seat post, and MTB style straight handlebars. Where as a gravel bike seems set up closer to a road bike with a hardtail, stiff frame, and non-suspension front fork with drop style handlebars. Both seem to have 38 to 40mm tires that are somewhere in between road and mountain bikes tires. If that is correct, would a hybrid bike be a better choice for a rider that does 60% trails and 40% road... or even 70% to 30% trails vs asphalt?
@DEFKNIGHT
@DEFKNIGHT 3 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on the trails really. If they are rutted and the rocks are large or the trail particularly bumpy with roots and occasional drops and jumps, I'd say go for the hybrid. But if your trails are flat with rare obstacles like the former, I'd say go for the cross bike. As far as asphalt is concerned, the cross bike will obviously be quicker as there is no power loss due to squat and the cross bike will be much lighter as there aren't any extras like shocks and the like slowing you further with much higher weight and bad aero. I'd say the only benefit to the hybrid on the street is comfort, as well for the trails. But for speeds sake, I'd sacrifice comfort to that degree any day for speed. Plus you could always go bigger with tires and still be far lighter than a hybrid and gain a little extra comfort.

@@dlevi67 I would love to spend time with my bike in Scotland! But no, I spend most of my time, this year, riding in the mountains, gorges, valleys and the plateau and descents above the eastern Range ( 1000 to 800 meter descents to the sea) Due to steep mountain sides, heavy seasonal monsoons and in years like this, many typhoons, the government has paved over most single lane forest and remote valley roads ( there are fire roads that are off limits... I need to organize some event rides!).. These are rough concrete pavers but after heavy rains the side roads often get washed over with sand/silt/clay/ gravel, after recent Typhoons, land slides would have required all but pro road bikes to push over . I run 35C touring/gravel tires ( Swalbe Marathon greenGuard 700/35c the past 3000km.. Great grip and excellent rolling resistance) as a comprimise as some of the smooth paved/ tarmac descents are the highlight of the week. I am still looking for a route that will motivate me to buy a second set of tires at 42+C ! There is one hiding somewhere out here... Once I find it I will need to finally change my cassette, no doubt;-)

@@colinmcdonald2499 Aargh! Two wrong guesses - first went Scotland (because of your name), then Oz (because of the eastern range and monsoon) - hence the mention of summer! Enjoy the skiing (and my envy), then! With COVID I don't know if I'll get anywhere near snow this winter. Very happy to share rides on Komoot - just started there as I'm waiting for my new bike - but alas Switzerland is no more: I came back to the UK three years ago. On the other hand, my old MTB is no longer the best thing for my rides which seem very much like the one you were describing (60-80 km, 75-80% tarmac), except in a far less scenic landscape: the highest hill around here is just below 300 metres.

I had a Kanzo Adventure with which I got along very well, and now I have ordered the new Kanzo Fast ... I fell in love with this bike. Look wonderful! I believe it is the perfect compromise between Gravel and racing bike. With two sets of wheels you have every possibility. I'm just afraid of delivery times: I hope they are not too long in Italy.

Yes, it looks beautiful and aggressive; I guess the only issue is that the max tyres on 650b are 46mm which is less than your Adventure. Are you buying the same size in the Kanzo Fast? I noticed that the geometry is quite different. I tested the Adventure a few days ago but unfortunately they only had a size Medium and I'm a Small or possibly an Extra Small. I've been looking at this and the Exploro Racemax. Delivery quoted for UK was 5 months...but if you just buy the frame then it's only 1-2 months.

Andrew Allen I ordered an extra size. I took a S for the Kanzo Adventure but now I opted for an M being the S on the limit of my height (I’m 1.78 height). I noticed the tyre issue. The tires are smaller, but in the end I do not need more than 700x40 mm for my use. Anyway, Kanzo adventure is really a wonderful bicycle! She was a great companion of adventure. I only hope that the new Kanzo Fast will come to me at least for Christmas as I ordered it at the end of August! 😅😅😅

Carlo Calligaro I’m 1.73m and the sizing calculator recommends I’m an XS but I think an S would fit me better. Yes, it depends on what kind of riding you do; if very rocky and muddy then a wider tyre is helpful; I look forward to hearing how you get on with the Fast; it’s such a cool looking bike 😍; I haven’t decided what I’m going to get yet, I might even get a used gravel bike as the waiting list for new bikes is crazy at the moment.

Andrew Allen 3T is a great bike, but it’s also most expensive than the Kanzo adventure... And il 3T is less comfortable... Anyway 2 great bike...

This is the first gravel bike that looks good to me, but I still don't get gravel riding) I guess, I should try it prior to judging)) The problem is - I know for sure, that sitting position with road handlebar is less stable, than a normal flat bar, and you don't want to lose handling stability on a loose surface. And secondly, you can fit 28 inch road wheels with gravel tires to any mtb hardtail, even older 26 inch frames will take them. But I guess I'm overthinking it) Gravel has some style to it, for sure.

It is beautiful, but I'm interested in seeing how that hub in the back holds up to drivetrain efficiency vs a 2x system. Beautiful looking bike though.

If I recall, it's only maybe a watt or less less efficient than the most efficient 2x systems.

But a rider on an aero bike will be faster than the same rider on a non-aero bike, all else being equal. That's the real point. Another and perhaps more interesting point for slower riders is that slower riders will save more time on an aero-bike that fast riders over the same course.

Is the internally geared hub lossy? The Shimano’s I’ve ridden are noticeably draggy, like a light brake rub on all the time. If your geared hub goes a long gravelly way from home, you’re SOL. So reliability better be solid.

An electronic version of an old idea, planetary hub plus derailleur. Even now, you can get a Sturmey-Archer three speed hub that will thread on a 9 speed cassette. Maybe I should do that with my drop bar 3-speed.
