I have a Trek Émomda SL 5 2019 everything stock came with Shimano 105 groupset and really want it to look a lot more streamline by "hiding" the cables if possible. It is rim brakes. Is it possible to get wireless gear shifter that fits for that model bike? The cabling looks very similar to the project bike there. Hope someone can help me out with some good ideas. Thanks.

I'm about to upgrade backward... Got a rim-brake dedicated frame and that's sort of technology I'm about to hold up to... Already looked at the price of 9 speed cassettes. Back in time, some cheep CS-HG50 (Tiagra version), can now be found in Sora or somewhere out of branded parts.Back then for like $30, Now? Ho, ho, ho, Santa is needed to get one starting with 11 teeth Not to mention 9 seed Ultegra paired with CN-93... MTB dedicated? Susre - no big deal, but for a road bike, prices nearly tripled...

Financially this doesn’t make sense, but was a fun project to watch. Keep in mind a professional cyclist would beat all of us with a sora group anyway. If your not competing, I don’t see any need to go above a 105.

This is effectively what I’ve done with my current bike. I started out with an alloy frame gravel bike with 1 x Rival on it. Over my life with it, I’ve changed and tweaked the drivetrain, the handlebars, the saddle, the wheels and the stem length. I’ve now completely dialled in the set up that’s perfect for my cycling. It means all I do next is find a frame I like and transplant the components… but there’s no rush ‘cause the frame is perfectly good.

As a 85kg rider, there's a limit to how much I'm willing to pay to shave a few more grams off the frame & other non-spinning parts. Lighter wheels & rims with less rolling friction will give me more benefit. The only reasons I'm considering carbon for my next frame is because there's more variety in frame shapes available and the increased stiffness.

A suggestion for a future upgrade could be to participate in a frame building course. I did one earlier this year, best 2 weeks of my life! Filet brazed Columbus tubing. The handlebar swap was probably the most sensible upgrade. People have a habit of focusing only on the bike vs the bike and rider combo. I swapped out my “aero bars” for a slimmer traditional compact handlebar a few months back. Makes a pretty significant difference once you’re up to speed. For reference 40cm down to 36cm + slightly inverted shifters. Felt skiddish at first, but like everything else in life, do it enough until it’s your new normal. Now i ride it like i never swapped.

I have older Dura Ace drivetrain on my Felt F2 and it’s phenomenal, I out-coast almost everyone’s-bikes especially when going downhill. The shifts are sharp and precise, not to mention so quiet that sometimes I have to look to see if it actually moved. Hearing the difference during climbs is amazing when everybody else is grinding their gears and chewing up cassettes. Great video, really enjoy your builds.
@trainiax
@trainiax Жыл бұрын
Dura-Ace shifting performance is top-notch, but let's be real. There's absolutely zero difference compared to an entry-level groupset when coasting - that's all in the tires and aerodynamics. A Claris or Sora groupset would be heavier and less refined, but it certainly wouldn't "grind gears" or "chew cassettes" if adjusted properly.

When I saw the first episode, I was still thinking... who wants to upgrade such a frame? @GCN Tech ... But what I realize is that for the ordinary amateur cyclist (like me) who rides maybe 100 - 200 km a week, this is the perfect bike. Yes well, a simple mechanical 105 would do it for me, but a good solid road bike like this is perfect.

If you watched the intro, the premise of the video is is it worth putting a Dura Ace on this bike then the answer is "No". "Worth it" implies price vs. performance. It is like putting GT3-level carbon ceramic discs on a stock Mazda Miata, not worth it. Does not need a sponsored video to get the answer.
@kidShibuya
@kidShibuya 2 жыл бұрын
@@sepg5084 Cool story. Except that an mx5 would benefit from those brakes if it has the same engine as a race car, which in this case the bike has. Anyway if someone wants to upgrade little by little why can't they? Also, I can't see how that frame holds any of the parts back. Frames make near zero difference to bike speed, it's all about rider position and rider aero, of which that bike can be great at. You seem to have drunk the marketing kool aid, you don't need to go out and buy a whole new bike just to enjoy better parts.
@kidShibuya
@kidShibuya 2 жыл бұрын
Actually thinking about it more, the one thing you do to a stock car to race it in long distance events is upgrade the brakes as road cars are heavier than race cars and are harder on brakes... A brake upgrade along with a rollbar is a must to race a road car, what are you thinking?

It’s a year later and I just watched this, but I have to comment. When you cut your zip ties, make sure to cut the tail off completely flush. You left a small bit when you trimmed the one holding the DI2 cable at the rear derailleur. It drives vehicle electricians and mechanics crazy because that is like a razor waiting to slice your hand open when you reach in to do work.

I went from well-maintained rim-brakes and Tiagra to 12spd Ultegra DI2 with hydraulic disc after yet another near-collision with another rider due to my braking distance being like 25 meters in the flat. It's a difference of night and day, purely in the braking department. Of course comparing apples and apples that have gone bad, but my point is that I mainly wanted to upgrade for convenience (no more changing brake lines) and safety, and both were super worth it imo.

Just a few years ago I went on a bit of a spree of building / rebuilding a bunch of bikes of varying quality with Ultegra and was always extremely pleased with the results and felt it was worth it to optimize the capabilities of the frames (including some chromoly steel and aluminum). But! that was when you could easily find a whole mechanical 11-speed Ultegra 6800 groupset online for like $700…. Fast forward to the present and the ROI calculus is far different.

You’ve also made an interesting point for people shopping for a new bike. When given the choice should you: A. Buy high end frame and lower spec parts (potentially to upgrade over time) B. Buy value frame with higher end spec (what you’ve built now, although Dura Ace is extreme in performance and price) I think for most people B makes most sense. The current value frame is already really really good

I agree, handlebars are a great place to start. But those bars? I've not found anything that looks or feels better than FSA compact. When I bought my second hand Pinarello, first thing to go were the factory bars for a set of FSA compacts. One thing I strive to achieve is common contact points on all my bikes. My second bike is a vintage steel Kuwahara touring bike which obviously won't take modern bars. So I made my own stem adaptor to accommodate modern stem and bars. I now have same bars and same saddle on both bikes. It's nice.

Ollie, I have a question about building a disc brake vs rim brake wheel. Rim brakes apply force to the rim, then tire and road. Disc brakes apply that force to the hub then spokes then rim and so forth. That means disc brake wheels apply a torque to the hub whereas rim brakes don’t. We often lace front wheels radially, as they don’t take torque like rear wheels…but now they will. Is a different, maybe 2x, lacing pattern recommended? Thanks! Richard

I'mma cringe and wince at those C50s. I get why (sponsorship n such), but you can save ~100g, 1/3 off the price for 120kg rated, UCI approved, bombproof 49mm carbon, DB units. Not even delving into Chinese products. That saved $1,200AUD could then be sunk back into further weight weenie-ing and replacing the horrendous stock saddle (I lasted all of 20min on it before the desire to yeet it over the moon into a recycling bin overrode me). Enjoy going for a roll Ollie, that frame is actually quite a delight. I'm hesitantly looking forward to getting out on mine after a horrendous 2 weeks of Covid, am feeling like I've the lungs of an asthmatic chain smoking hamster... fingers crossed that's not so. At least i don't need to peak in 6 weeks for the World Champs on my doorstep (Literally!)

Their is a little clip in the new 12 speed group set pack that should allow you to clip the wire to the rear mech, so you’d at least be able to get rid of one of those cable ties.

I think a properly sized handlebar relative to what is comfortable for your body is more important than trying to eke out some small aero performance benefit.

@@gcntech I would put a carbon fork on it, a dura ace groupset, with those cool wheels, and compare the difference in weight performance etc, it would be cool if Ollie Bridgewood tried it and explained the improvements 😎 , maybe a rematch, eurosuperbike vs a real superbike 🥰🥰

Nice to see if its a viable option to save some cash for a cheaper frame and see if how far the frame development has evolved

I’m still considering upgrading my 2020 Allez Claris with 105. I’ve already got really nice 11 sp compatible wheels (Hunt Aero Superdura) and the frame is still in amazing shape after 5000 miles and lots of mountain descents. I am absolutely curious if $600 is worth it since 8sp has been fine. I’m leaning towards yes, because I don’t have the $3500 they’re asking for a Tarmac 105.

Could you show us how you fitted the di2 battery. You also said not to hang the di2 wire outside the frame but you did just that. How does that work?

I bought a canyon endurace AL about 3 years ago right before Covid with 105 groupset. It was a great deal about 1600-1700 from canyon ordered over the phone and they gave me a discount. Anyway I’m thinking of upgrading the wheels, seat post and possibly handlebars and stem. I’m keeping my aluminum frame because I weigh 265lbs and think that’s too much for carbon. Do you think I’m upgrading too much ? Since I didn’t spend much to begin with??

Yes, understand the concept of putting top of line groupset on basic frame, which will, lo and behold, likely ride like a basic bike frame with a top of line groupset? The point is if you can afford top of line groupset, you almost certainly can afford a new frame too. In other words, the concept is interesting but in real world, few cyclists would sensibly pay for a separate top of line groupset (not an issue if you have a sponsor) relative to the value of the frame, when new frame built up already will be less expensive.

I had a great carbon bike from 2014 with 10 sp DuraAce 7900. Parts started to get hard to find, so I upgraded in 2019 to 11sp 9100 as I wasn't ready to part with the frame. I put the old DuraAce on my son's bike. Two years later, in 2021, I ordered an Oltre XR4 frameset and will continue with that bike for probably 5 more years until 11sp gets hard to source and I decide to upgrade to 12sp and put the 9100 on my trainer bike.

For the price of Dura-Ace wheels and a complete di2 groupset, you can buy a very good new carbon bike with very good wheels and a proper groupset (105 or Ultegra). And the most important thing because we are not professionals it's not about the bike and bike spec, it's all about power in your legs.
@vanjagrcevic1395
@vanjagrcevic1395 2 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. For as amateurs its all about power in your legs. 95% of the audience, including the Gcn promoter are ordinary amateurs and are not able to produce power and maintain high speeds for a long time like profesionals in order to feel the benefits of high-performance equipment. For example, I ride an alloy bike (Bmc teammachine alr) with a Sora 2x9 groupset and alloy wheels. I tried a carbon bike with carbon wheels and Ultegra di2 on my favorite route and I had a better average speed of 0.6kmh. Is it worth investing 2.5-3.5k euros to have a better average speed of 0.6kmh. I doubt it. As long as there are sheep, there will be wool. 😆

How much of the weight saving is just from the wheels? Would be good to know how much weight savings there is just from upgrading the groupset since upgrading groupset + wheels all at the same time is very costly.

Spinning a crank not underload could be symptomatic of loose fitting bearing, lack of grease and a multiple of things. It's not representative of the quality of the BB.

Ollie, you now have some holes in the frame where the shiftingcables used to go. What is the best thing to do with that? I upgraded my TT bike to Di2, but these holes must be causing some unwanted airflow. Should I put some kind of putty / filler into this? #AskGCNTech

I may have missed where this frame was sourced, but there seems to be a rather significant dent on the left side in the down tube near the bb. I know that some frames have crimps in certain places, maybe I just didn't get a good look.

My best justification for Di2 is the ability to hammer the chain down to the small ring on the hill with plenty of torque on the crankset. Mechanical front derailiers push the chain down with a spring and too much torque can stop it moving the chain resulting in you grinding to a halt on that steep hill. Di2 used a motor to go up and down the rings. Also the sound of the front derailier especially as its trimming, but it would be childish to get excited about that. wouldn't it?
