Due to work on a couple of bridges further north, the Great Central Railway are running DMU services from Leicester North Station, through Rothley, and up the little used Mountsorrel branch, an ex mineral line to the quarry, passing the brilliant Mountsorrel and Rothley Community Heritage Centre at Nunckley Hill. This weekend only featured Derby Lightweight single unit 'Iris', from the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. The latter part of the video is shot from within Iris.

I wish our railway were still active (Bangor to Afonwen). As a kid I used to sit on the garden wall and talk to the drivers stopped waiting for the manual level crossing gates to be opened.

Life was more laid back then, the drivers on our local colliery line were similar

It was crazy losing most of the West Wales coastal lines. I was lucky to travel on the Gaerwen to Amlwch line in 1969.

The Senedd have published a plan to reopen the route from Bangor to Afonwen and Aberystwyth to Carmarthen linking North to South Wales with a through route completely within Wales. No doubt Westminster will not be happy along with the narrow gauge line that operates out of Caernarfon about the project

@@JohnSmith-bx8zb That all sounds wonderful but with the current administration I'll believe it when I see it. I'm sure they can find a way to run both standard and narrow gauge into Caernarvon.

I like that shade of BR Blue on the Class 101.

I think it's normal rail blue, but it does look different on the front with the smaller yellow panel

Fun video. Thanks for posting. Another reason to re-visit the GCR. Fancy a trip up the Mountsorell branch......on a DMU. I think they need to grease those rails.

Serious flange squeal! Though it's so steep they might struggle if greased

What I think they should do,is to get a dmu or a small loco that can haul passenger trains big enough for the lines and operate from swithland reservoir up to mountsorrel halt. Then it would attract more visitors and get galas and special events so it creates more money,Instead of relying on the gcr

A nice short branch to explore for the ride, it makes a change from the main line, but the wheel flange screeching is intrusively annoying at times, would be better without it.

Sharp curves and steep grades I'm afraid. Suspect the check rails add to it too

@@harbourwoodlandvisitor2445 as someone who was lifting and packing the track a week before the trains started running, I will say the track quality is about is as good as it will ever be. The gradients and curves are pretty severe on the branch (it was a mineral railway originally with just 4-wheeled locos and wagons running over it), so whatever changes to the track happen, it will always be a bit noisy when split bogie stock of any kind runs over it!
