For ecosystems to function they need energy; and we can see how this energy moves through ecosystems with food chains. We also explore how the populations of predators and prey vary over time with predator prey cycles.

could be lost in respiration of the previous organism and not all biomass is digestible, such as feathers

a consumer does not actually eat all parts of the prey. these parts include bones, tendons, etc. this is why most (what my teacher told me was 90%) energy is lost.

The sun is not a living organism so is not part of a food chain. It is an energy source, some of which is incorporated into chemical energy (glucose) in the plant.
