I use these videos a lot and always direct my students to them but there is a mistake in the video. Chlorine gas has the formula Cl2. They often ask this type of equation in the exam and it is really important to highlight that they are diatomic and need to write the correct formula. Thanks

Thank you so much. I’m currently in year 11 with 8 months left until GCSEs, I’ve never understood chemistry and just decided I would fail the GCSE but over the past few days I’ve worked my way through 9 of your videos and I actually understand what I’d never understood in class. Hiya mate, thank you for such a kind comment - and sorry to hear about your struggles with chemistry yesterday! You’re super welcome for the video - really hope they can help you get your head around the main concepts! The most important thing with your revision is not to let it get on top of you :) just do a little bit every day and make sure you understand the bit you’re doing. That way you build up a really solid knowledge base that helps you learn the other material too - everything fits together!! Good luck 🙌

Recap (for myself) Alkali metals -grp 1 - soft, low density, low melt/boil points -top is less reactive, doqnwards more reactive - want full valence shell so minus outermost 1 electron (cuz its grp 1) - more reactive downwards as distance between nucleus n valence shell larger Ionic compounds -Ionic bond -white salts, water soluble Reactions Alkali + H²0 → metal hydroxide + hydrogen gas (reacts vigorously) + Cholrine gas → eg. NaCL (vigorous) +Oxygen → metal oxide (eg. Sodium peroxide Na²O² sodium oxide Na²0)

I have a question, I understand the trend that as you go down group 1, the reactivity increases however why are alkali metals more reactive than transition metals such as copper (which has multiple charges such as +1, +2 etc). Thank you!!
@ak24032 Жыл бұрын
I think this is because they only have 1 outer shell electron to lose, so it takes less energy than it does for transition metals? Not completely sure myself 😅

Sodium chloride doesn't catch fire when you use it on food because ithe sodium is already oxidised. Sodium metal would catch fire if you put it on your chips...especially if you added vinegar. Likewise rubidium salts are not particularly reactive obviously rubidium is.

I have a question sir!!! My question is why does the melting and boiling points decrease down the group??? Sir,pls answer!!!!
@beha75543 жыл бұрын
Hi I know I'm late but the answer is that down the group the atoms are getting bigger and have more shells. This means that the force of attraction between it's shells also decreases ( since they are far away from the nucleus)as a result when we heat them, the forces of attraction between them are so weak that they are easily freed from the forces of attraction and easily form a liquid. I hope it helps

Why do the melting and boiling points decrease??
@Cognitoedu5 жыл бұрын
Hey, you shouldn't have to worry about that for GCSE. But out of interest - it's because the metallic bonding between the metal ions and their delocalised electrons gets weaker. This happens because the ions get larger as you go down the group, so the density of positive ions / negative electrons decreases. So the weaker bonding would require lower temperatures to break. Hope that helps!
