DW Reporter Lukas Stege explores the Polish city of Gdańsk, where the Eastern Bloc began its decline! Communism‘s deterioration picked up pace when the port workers at Lenin Shipyard went on strike in 1980 and the independent union Solidarity was founded. Join Lukas on his journey through Europe’s recent history, which was heavily influenced by these events in Gdańsk. And he also brings us to a very special lost place in this port city!

The most beautiful city in Europe, Gdansk, has everything. Magnificent, beautiful and rich architecture. Ancient precious monuments. Romantic streets. Charming cafes, cozy restaurants. True Polish patriots living there. The tough people of the sea who live there. The wind from the sea as well as the beautiful Tri-City with the city of Sopot at the forefront and modern Gdynia. Orlowo is also cozy. Mount Pacholek in Gd-Oliwa with an interesting view and unusual organs in the Archcathedral and a beautiful park. Beautiful beaches all around. Fresh fried fish with chips. What more is needed for happiness, which I, in the New Year from across the Ocean, as an old Gdańsk (Gdanszczanin) citizen, wish to all.

One of the most beautiful cities in Europe, D@nzig was stolen from Germ@ny; along with Z0pp0t, Bresl@u, Stettin, Th0rn, M@rienburg, P0sen, etc. Not only that; most of their Germ@n inhabitants were kicked out were forced to evacuate, most of whom didn't have anything to do with W0rld W@r 2 or Gen0cide and even those who even actively opposed such things. So we demand them back. We are not even trying to take anything away from P0land. We are just demanding them back. Give back our cities or we know how to take them back.

Following the fragmentation of the Kingdom of Poland, the Piast dynasty ruled the Duchy of Silesia. One of the most important events during this period was the foundation of the Diocese of Wrocław by the Polish Duke and from 1025, King Bolesław the Brave in 1000. This is a great video about a very interesting place. I brought 5 friends to Warsaw and Krakow 20 years ago and it was a great trip. Since then I have learned of many more fascinating places there. If I get back, Gdansk will be included. Good job!

I went to this museum it was an amazing experience! Also the WW2 museum was just as good!I went with my older son and we both found that the museum was well put together..We even had lunch at the Amber restaurant which is in the solidarity museum..We had a lovely lunch there!❤

Gdańsk is the most beautiful city in Poland. The smell of the wind from the sea prevails. Beautiful beaches, monuments, many tourist attractions, Oliwa Park, organ concerts in the cathedral. Here live the tough people of the sea who travel the oceans. Greetings from Canada.

The shipyards are not completely closed. They still service and repair ships. They also build yachts, actually quiet a lot of them and a new 100 million € wind farm metal pylon factory will open there.

The ships are still build but the at diffrent places. The Remotnowa Shipbuilding and Remontowa Ship Repairs are located closet to the coastline. The localisacion of the old Stocznia Gdanska isn't the best for the new methods of ship production. As ports the shipbuilding industry is moving from inland harbours into the sea and it's the case around the world.

I'd like to go to Gdansk and Warsaw. Truth be told Warsaw is somewhere I'd like to go because I got more interested in going after watching the film The Pianist. To think about what happened in 1939 was a dark chapter in Poland's history.

According to the inhabitants of Gdańsk, when the German army left Gdańsk, only a few houses were demolished. When the Soviet army entered, Gdansk was in ruins. Even religious buildings and churches were destroyed. The Hague Convention explicitly stipulates not to attack such objects. The Red Army unnecessarily destroyed all of Gdansk and for that the Russian Federation should pay compensation to Poland. The Germans said that Gdansk would be rebuilt by the Poles in 100 years. Byly zničeny i náboženské budovy a kostely. Haagská úmluva výslovně stanoví neútočit na takové objekty. Rudá armáda zbytečně zničila celý Gdaňsk a za to by měla Ruská federace zaplatit Polsku náhradu. Němci říkali, že Gdaňsk Poláci znovu postaví za 100 let. Dnes je Gdaňsk nejkrásnějším městem v Evropě.

Besides we live in the European Union with free movement of goods and person. So if someone absolutely want to move to the birthplaces of his or her grandparent, e g. Sczcecin, Gdansk or Wroclaw, they could. Here in Germany some old people who like to meet up to watch old photos of Breslau and sing Silesian folk song are of considered as revanchistic - which I think is not fair. I guess there are also some old folks in Poland who like to dress up in folk costumes from Lwow or sing local songs from there.

gdansk is dutch nothing polish about it, architecture is dutch it was rebuild in that style.

Dutch immigrants helped a lot with shaping the city. You are correct about that but it’s also very polish. Multicultural city with a very rich history :)

Still, it was founded by Poles in 980 Ad. not by Germans or Dutch.
