So its Oct 2019. I've had this 2016 version for about 2 months. I love it. It's a good entry-level 360 camera. If ya scatch the lense it's because you are careless. I've had it in a light rain does great. sometimes ya can see the line difference when stitched, but hey, it's not a 2000.00 camera. so. This is all new in the world. But for its money, it definitely is worth it! I bought some extra lense replacements just in case. But so far I am careful so I haven't scratched it yet. Make sure ya have a Samsung galaxy phone s6 or better, or ya will get frustrated only being able to use the computer to transfer video/images. There is NO other way so don't bother asking.

I have a small drone photog business and have yet to get into the 360 market. There's been more demand as of late for more action footage using a freestyle/race type drone which requires faster more acrobatic flight than your standard DJI, almost autonomous, type drone, so I've been hesitant to spend the money. I found one of these Gear 360s online, lightly used, for $40, I don't have android phone at all, but I'm used to transferring all my drone footage to pc for editing before posting, would this be a good jumping off point with this cam and for that price? Thanks!

Bought it (2017 version)new yesterday for $50, and for a basic 360 camera, this thing is a marvel!!! My mom is flipping out watching the 2 videos i already made on the samsung vr.....totally worth it!!!

hello there, thank's to your comparrison video...I went out and got a 2016 model yesterday. i was pleasantly surprised to get one from a local outlet(no waiting)for exacly half price too...am amazed by the quality of the unit...i payed the exact same amount for a standard sport camera about year ago.

@@drakgrotta took a while to receive, but I got it. It works great, but the software is outdated and hard to find, but managed to get it working. My only complaint is that there are very few programs that can edit 360 videos. It took some searching for that.

Even though this is the 360 camera that first caught my eye, I still don't have mine...yet! (it's on the way though) I was already considering a phone upgrade, and this was the final straw...got the S 8 plus and not looking back...much...still loving my Nexus 5. Looking forward to doing my own comparison of the 2016 model with the 2017 model...

Been haveing lots of fun with my camera...i even managed to attatch it to the handle bar grip of my MTB useing the tripod held by two hair bungie's...rock solid and stable with no clunking or rattling.

Thanks Ben! In retrospect I also thought it was worth getting a Samsung phone for the Gear 360. Fortunately I found a unit on ebay that had bad imei so I was able to get it for much less :). On a tangential note, you've used the Samsung S7 for a while now, did it change your thoughts about iPhone? It changed mine - my next phone will be an S8 or Zenfone AR. :) Best regards, Mic

+360Rumors.com good to hear! I definitely like Samsung more now, however it's not perfect.. I have a lot of issues with writing and locating my files within the phone. Still it's a good tool to have, to properly understand what Android users are working with 👌🏻

Hello, really thanks for this review. I am really interesting to get a first 360 camera and this one seems to be the best first choice. The only thing that is a question is that I do not have any Samsung phone. Could we use the camera even if we do not have a Samsung phone ? The Samsung phone is used to have a display no ? You dont need a samsung phone. YOu can operate the camera on its own and just import the photos on your computer. Then you get a free copy of Cyberlink Power director which supports 360 photos and video stitching.

I think it's the S6 and S7 galaxy phones.. although you might want to check on their website. And yeah, it's perfect for interiors since it has HDR :)

Mr Shef Codes glad to hear! Yeah I mean the planets you see here were done on my Mac.. you just need to import the footage to Insta360 Studio and export to HD. I have a tutorial on that too 😉

The app of this camera is incredible! The wi-fi direct connection is simply magic. you can just touch your s7 edge with the NFC turned on with the gear 360 that they automatically connect.

THE guys of collect app .. they are great..i have a bug yesterday doing that graffiti movie ..they open a chat to talk to me directly.. when i reported a bug.. and he saidthat there is a brazilian in the project.. and spoke in portuguese.. ! lets wait until we could do some editing mobile, like we can do in the insta360 studio for MAC.

I've been thinking of getting a 360 camera for for a while but there doesn't seem to be one out that ticks all boxes (I'm using an iPhone). I'm looking for a 360 GoPro Equivalent for travelling. The Ricoh theta S looked good but the software and lack of picture quality seem to be issues. I considered he 4k 360fly but that only shoots 240 in the vertical which i'd find annoying. Do you have any recommendations or know of any 2nd generation cams out this year? Thanks.

+Shane Cybowicz I'd advise against the GoPro option! No need to complicate the workflow that much. If you have that kind of budget, I'd definitely consider getting a Samsung smartphone since the Gear 360 delivers the best photo and video quality of everything out there- the cam is only $189 now so that will lighten the blow 😉

Hey- at the moment it's this Gear 360.. if you don't want to get a Samsung phone then i'd suggest the Theta S. It has higher resolution photos than the upcoming Gear 360.

I bougth this camera 2 months ago and it has been a Nigthmare. The action Director does not work in my Mac 2012, the gear 360 Manager is not available to my Samsumg S5. The autopano have time limit in the free trail. I am goona be crazy. I want to use the camera but I don't know what can I do. You need to do your research before buying a camera.. nowhere will you find it’s compatible with Mac. Also for 4k video you need a phone that can handle it and I guess yours is too old and can’t handle it. Sorry!

I haven't personally, but i've heard lots of complaints about this. Honestly i think if you run it for too long (20 minutes+ per clip) @ 4k, you should expect that. All other non-360 cameras are prone to overheating when recording 4k for too long, so it's nothing out of the ordinary.

BDcycling I've done recordinf in 4k for 30min + and have not had any heat issues. A caveat to that statement thoufh is that was done outside so maybe that helped but the temp was around 28C. Other times when I've been filming for long times it has been on the move.

I've loved my Gear 360 since I bought it a couple of months ago. The removable battery has been great for extended shooting and having the memory card as storage makes it easy to move files. The mini tripod is a good handle and fits into the little bag that comes with it though I use a selfie stick/tripod most of the time now. I've mounted mine on the handle bars of my motor bike for riding and its great for a different perspective. One of the weaknesses that I have found has been the Samsung software on the phone. It won't save to external memory and since my phone hasn't got too much space left internally I keep having to move files off or transfer the files before stitching to my PC. Samsung have acknowledged this issue but have said that's it's too difficult to address at this stage. The Cyberlink Action Director is effective at stitching the images/video but is very basic at editing. You really need a better video editor to create anything that doesn't look home made I've have none of the over heating issues that some people have commented on though I have had the occasional camera lockup which can only be fixed by removing the battery. Overall, I haven't seen anything better around this level but keen to check out the new 2017 model though not having a removable battery is disappointing. I don't really care about the the live feed at this stage though it might be interesting to try. Are you sure about the current model having higher specs for photos and video? According to the Samsung website, the 2017 seems to have higher resolutions.

Thexder good to hear your thoughts! Interesting, because I swore I was able to move the footage to the Micro SD card part of the memory- I could be wrong since I'm still a Samsung beginner. I think the video from the new model will more or less be the same, however photo will take a significant cut. Not sure about image quality either, I'll be sure to post more when I get it 👍👊🏻

the thing is that you need space when saving to your cell phone.. and theeeeen you can transfer to your sd card. It could be awesome if you could save direct in the sd card of your phone, when transfering from the camera..

The issue is, you need to stitch them first.. which you'd need to do in Gear 360 Action Director (on PC). After that, you can either send to your phone, or edit in Insta360 Studio (look through my channel for a tutorial) :)

I was checking some tutorials for after effects of how to edit them.. but I will definitely check your tutorial.. but what would you suggest me? just stick with the gear 360 (taking into account I don't have a Samsung Galaxy and not planing to get one)? or return it and get a tetha 360? I want the best resolution and composting for KZfaq videos. thanks a lot Ben! you are the man!

The thing is, you totally can use this camera without a galaxy phone. All the important settings can be accessed on the camera itself, and you can stitch the video with the Gear 360 Action Director program. It may be a slight handicap, but this camera is totally worth buying even if you don't have the phone, IMO. I bought Two, because it's such a great value, and that way I would have a spare.

Nice! Although unfortunately Action Director isn't available on Mac and most of us are on Mac. My 'cheat' is similar to yours, except i stitch the footage on Galaxy S7 then mount it to my Mac like a hard drive. So yeah, there are imperfect workarounds for both Mac and PC users.. just not iPhone users.

Do you know of any good Samsung Gear 360 forums? Looking for some help. I can't find any forums with any traffic. I just bought the Gear 360. I have done several photos. All look amazing. I have an older Sammy phone that is not compatible. Just waiting for the S8 to arrive. In the mean time I am using the PC Gear 360 Action Director to stitch photos. They look great in the 360 AD software. They look great on hosting sites like RoundMe. But on Facebook the horizon is at 45 degrees on all of them.

Hey Mike- yes i do. On facebook there's a group called 'Samsung Gear VR 360'.. there are lots of active members on there.

I have been in analysis paralysis on my first 360 cam purchase and it is all your fault! :) But you fixed that now, just 1 day late. I ordered the Sammy 360 yesterday. I want it primarily for 360 pics and the specs are better than the rest. (Real Estate photos) I have really learned much from your channel, but you did not show much Sammy love. That made me question my analysis. But now we are on the same page. All is right. After I get the camera, and master on/off and taking a pic and a vid, I'll have to buy your book to ramp up the learning curve. Speaking of Real Estate, do you have any insights in to the 360 tour hosting sites? Might be a great new channel idea :)

Glad you got one! I've only had the Gear 360 a month which is why i hadn't made videos about it. I haven't looked too much into real estate hosting sites but i know there are a ton of options out there. Will look into it when i get a spare minute (possibly the year 2020)

Can get the camera for very little off eBay, for instance. May not come with manual, however. Here it is: www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00066650/ Also, if you need the serial number, pop open the little side door and grab a magnifying glass.

Found you can get into the settings menu and in scrolling through find the serial number. However, there's also a product ID that is ONLY found on the original packaging. If you want to do some editing with other software, that might be necessary. Supposedly, can purchase it if missing.

Be careful, new app don't work on NFC. Old app is disappear. I like NFC feature.

A huge downsides this camera has. Samsung only smartphone sync. (There is a lagy cracked app) Overheating! No service (if lens broken). No live streaming. ...but still I love it!

hey, do u mind testing out the photo quality when stitched in the camera vs the gear 360 director? i understand that the resolution and size is different when same photo stitched in each method.

+bluefelcon hey! Like I mentioned in the video, I'm on Mac and don't have access to action director. The smartphone does a great job so I see no need to bring it to your computer.

bluefelcon I am using Parallel Windows 7 with mac book pro, and the action director software have some problem with virtual graphic card, all video and photo and video will turn to black image when stitched to 360

am i the only one who hates tiny planet and the other weird distorted views these new fangled cameras take. its amazing how the normal 360 panorama images are not enough for some people

I got a Gear 360 (2017) free with my Note 8. It's a piece of junk compared to most other 360 cameras like the Rylo. The blending of the stitching are horrible. It doesn't even have any kind of usable Image Stabilization making any motion very exaggerated. This guy must have been paid to do this review.

‘This guy’ was not paid to make this review, and that reasoning is just silly. Of course it’s not as good as the newer cameras of 2018 (it’s a 2016 camera so there’s no comparison) however you also need to be realistic with your expectations of what you get from a free camera. Of course you’re not gonna get the capabilities of a $500 camera for free when you buy a $500 phone.
