In this video, I make some MOD0.6 involute gears using the gear cutters I made in my last video. The gears are made from mild steel and are going to be used in a model five-speed gearbox. In the video, I use my home-made dividing head and a rotary table to index the gears. This is the process of incrementally rotating the gear blank to cut the correct number of teeth. I am using a Myford Super 7B lathe and an X3 milling machine.

Speaking of mod 0.6 gears, a set where one has 200 teeth and the other 189 will almost perfectly convert a 1.5 mm pitch leadscrew to 16 TPI or vice versa. At mod 0.6 they'll also more or less fit on the common imported 7" mini-lathes; this is a project I look forward to tackling this winter. Thank you for the video; there's no way to have too much insight into the practice.

The exact (not approximate) conversion needs 120 and 127 tooth gears. Why would you cut two gears with a total tooth count 70% higher than this only to achieve an approximation? 86 and 91 work as an approximate pair and the total teeth on the two combined is less than just one of the gears suggested above. If you are feeling lazy, 34 and 36 are good enough.

Enjoyed your video - presentation & content. The centre height off the lathe cross-slide for the tailstock seemed a happy coincidence until I realised you had probably also made the dividing head with the same set up.

If you don't have a milling machine, line boring the dividing head on the lathe saddle is an easy way to get the bores true AND dead-on lathe centre height, which will be useful for milling with a cutter in the lathe chuck... keyways or cross drilling is a simple process then... I made an identical dividing head in this way, I also made 2MT spindle nose collets for milling cutters or "barstock"...the increased rigidity was huge !!... 😎👍☘️🍺

I like the skills you exhibit. I will follow your creativity. Question: how do you work out what gears to use when finding the odd gear teeth number?
@MetalMachineShop
@MetalMachineShop 3 ай бұрын
Thanks! Assuming I don’t already have a gear with the same number of teeth, or a multiple thereof, I use a spreadsheet and a bit of trial and error to work it out. Here’s a link to an Excel file calculator on my website. www.amdengineer.com/resources/

cool contraption. Looking at the finish on your parts it looks like you have some serious rigidity issues on your lathe. Might be worth checking the bearings and gibs.

HPC Gears in UK sells a very large range of gears so you should be able to find something to suit. They can customise gears if you have the budget for it. You can find them online.

May I ask a silly question ,how do you determine the diameter of each gear depending on the number of teeth you need ?thanks
@MetalMachineShop
@MetalMachineShop 8 ай бұрын
You can either do it from look-up tables or by calculation. The gear diameter is normally expressed as the pitch circle diameter which is the effective diameter of the gear. The outer diameter of the gear blank is greater and depends on the gear module (how big the teeth are).

Whats the cutting fluid ? ..looks like Rocol RTD.. (Stinky stuff but great for tapping, milling & turning) nice job... I made a dividing head like that many years ago using the Myford banjo... the design was in a book I still have somewhere... I'm running an ML7 myself, couldn't afford the Super Seven at the time...🙄 😎👍☘️🍺

It's drilling and tapping fluid that I got from Machine Mart years ago. Doesn't smell too horrific or maybe I've got used to it! The S7 was second hand but still quite an investment. The gearbox is a great timesaver.
