Hi Folks and welcome back, I have been asked a lot about the gear I took with me on the Sweden/Norway wilderness canoe trip, so this video is all about my gear choices - what worked, what didn’t, what I’d change next time and my general thoughts about the trip as a whole.
I have put some links to some of the gear below - I couldn’t include everything as there is a character limit in the description box, but hopefully they’ll steer you towards some items that I’ve been asked about.
I hope you enjoy the video,
Thanks for watching.

As a kid,10yrs old, our school took us to the broads where I learned to sail. We went to Snowdon. It scared the hell out of me, but the achievement was incredible.Cubs taught me bushcraft tenting and cooking outdoors. Even an Army assault course. Every kid should know how to swim too. Because of insurance and health and safety.....it's now more difficult for schools. Because of this I became more resilient in adulthood....I never give up. I try to be positive. I've made terrible mistakes in my life, but I've learned to move on due in the main, to that early training. Thank you Simon for these wonderful vlogs 😎☯️🌱

Planning the trip, would be interesting video to watch Simon. How you contacted your help etc, now you're the , on point guy, so to speak. People will want to follow in your footsteps, and do it for themselves. Great adventure video, you both did amazing and completed the task on time and in good British fashion. Would highly recommend US army jungle boots for canoe trips like these, look for a genuine supplier like Altama, lots of knock offs out there. They are a mix of leather and nylon, lots of colour patterns available, can be worn laced up in the day for support, then unlaced in the evening with a fresh set of dry socks to dry them out with your feets own warmth by the fire. They have drain holes, a Panama sole for shedding mud, soft compound rubber for grip in the wet, no padding to soak up and hold water. I wore them canoeing with merino socks, didn’t even attempt to keep my feet dry, the holes pump out the water and design means they dry super quick and don’t stink up like neoprene. Accepting wet feet means you tend to lift kit into and out of the boat much more safely than awkwardly lifting trying to keep them dry. I took them off to dry my feet out over lunches. Loved the series I can’t wait to get back out canoeing in Canada next season Quetico wildlife park is amazing if your looking for locations. Thanks for sharing and carrying all that camera kit.

Hi Simon! I am watching your videos for 2 years now and I am always smiling on interpreting your coffee maker as a vintage one. Here in Hungary you can buy these even brand new :) Of course it is not an up-to-date technology, however they are really durable. My grandma has one that is in age of 20+ years! If you (or any other fans reading this) are around Hungary, you can get it in almost any household store. Also at antique stores for sure. note: Always buy some spare sealing ring as well. Thanks for your great videos. Waiting to watch similar good adventures from you. Viktor

I totally agree with the mindset of push yourself to make it mean something. Going out of your comfort zone and beyond is a good thing. Especially as we get older, so easy to just say we are getting older and must slow down, but we are still very capable. All about being strong minded. Loves this video, the honesty and I loved your trip. Glad the foot is feeling better now

When horse packing on multi-day trips, I use dried ice (frozen nitrogen) on foods that will be used later in the trip, so I don't have to eat the ridiculous amount of carbs in army rations and/or freeze dryied foods. nice vid. thx.

Nice info video. I use Salomon X Ultra boots, Keen sandals, and LaCrosse Burly boots for canoeing. Salomons can take wet footing and dry out ok. In warm water and weather the Keens are great. The LaCrosse at 18" high if I recall correctly work great in cold water wet footing. Cook kits for me are Trangia 27 with alcohol and isobutane burner, or toaks 1000ml and 750ml pots with the fancy feast alcohol stove. I do have wood gas stoves but find I don't care for carrying them. I carry a spare paddle also.

Another cracking & informative film. What i would say on footwear is that if you wear hefty boots all the time, you foot & ankle muscles & tendons get weak. That might be part of the reason for your tendonitis 🤷🏻‍♂️ Glad you are all well & reached the point where you want to do something similar because you recall the tough bits less vividly than when you were going through them 😁

The water shoes could be used for such carrying on trips if one was to condition to them, the minimalist foot wear crowd has been perfecting this over years. You should expect tired feet if you have not conditioned to them. Yes, I went bare foot for a year to fix a foot problem and it helped greatly and I still use minimalist foot wear. It is possible.

A cheap pair of welding gloves from the Flea Market will do the job great. You burn them all in the end but welder's gloves will hold together till the leather crisps. Ally canoes are a weird balance of light, rugged, expedition grade against catastrophically fragile if you ever wrapped or pinned one. The massive portability advantage tips the scale in many cases. It's getting hard to find a pilot that will still strap a hard canoe to the struts of a float plane. So you have to charter a Twin Otter that can put canoes inside. Then at the end, flying a hard canoe out can be more than you paid for it. I put my Ally in a hockey bag and checked it on a regular flight out of Norman Wells. They need a spray deck as well for a serious trip in big water or bad weather. The tumblehome makes them splashy and as the heaviest point in a flexible boat, your knees are in the bilge. Nasty in cold water.
@simonablokeinthewoods

I thought the same about their transportability - not so much float planes for us, but regular flights, trains etc 👍

Hi Simon. Just wanted to add a comment about you using a filter to filter the water in scandinavia. I'm living in Norway and have been hiking all around Norway many times. Basically you never need to filter the water and you can drink from all lakes, unless there's a lot of farming around them. But water from all the lakes that are in the middle of nowhere really don't need filtering. It's excellent water quality. I've never filtered any water here in Norway and never got sick once.

Somebody else has mentioned about setting up a Patreon or some means to allow followers to contribute, I have to agree. Completely understand why you wouldn't want to, some channels I subscribe to come across as a bit "please send us money" and others I guess don't want to be "pay me and I'll do more". How about a half way house? Set up a "Buy me a coffee" then those of us who are inclined, can and those who don't, won't. No obligation on either side. May be you will get enough to buy a box of matches, may be enough for a Canoe or a new Defender! 😂😂 Really respect your honesty and integrity, particularly re sponsorship and not going down the oh so fashionable "shorts" route.

Simon, when you get the chance, hire a fishing guide to take you fishing near where you live -- someone who will give you tips on rods, reels, and lures, but most especially where to fish and at what times. That will give you great confidence to fish more in waters far from where you live. Also, researching in advance the lakes, rivers, and streams where you're going would give you valuable info on baits, lures, etc. I love to fish here in Texas! Don't know that much, but am learning everyday. Thanks for the video!

I enjoyed all the videos from both you and Andy. I'm glad to see this one as I was someone who wondered about some of these things, especially those canoes. I have to say, you did a brilliant job of going through the kit and interspersing clips of everything in use. That was excellent! I was not at all surprised to hear how you enjoyed the challenge. I'm sort of the same way - I enjoy the personal challenge of knowing I can still do things that I want to do. As I'm never going to get to any of these places of do any of those things, I truly enjoy it vicariously! I'm retired and I spend most of my time in my garden, cooking or painting. Hi Simon. Just a note regarding your medical kit. I’ve been a medic for 34 years and the one thing that will save your life is a tourniquet. You guys use axes, knives and saws and an bad arterial bleed will finish you off pretty quick. They weigh next to nothing and you can keep them on for two hours before limb damage. Worse case scenario you can you release the tourniquet and apply pressure for 5 minutes then reapply. That way lactic acidosis and limb damage is avoided. Great trip you guys had and thoroughly enjoyed the adventures 👍🏼

For good cheap gloves to use around a fire just get some welding gloves. Usually under a tenner. A great comprehensive debriefing Simon. I always find it useful to write a packing list for my next trip around this time, before I forget what I could have left out.

Watched both yours and Andy's videos on that trip. Amazing and lots of long days and hard work too. "Portaging" is a new word I've never heard before. Obviously meant walking by land between lakes, etc. Getting ready for another? Love your videos. Take care out there.

Absolutely loved these films Simon. Would really like to see a trilogy but can't help but think Andy wouldn't fancy it again (he's not had much luck). Anyway can't wait for the next adventure. Hope Mags and the family are well.
