I've upgraded the suspension on my CRF300 Rally, and it sits a little higher than before, so the side stand is too short. Previously I'd done a home made modification to lengthen the side stand with a plastic block, however now Rally Raid have one which is 20mm longer than stock.

This video is my install and comparison with the Honda OEM side stand. Installation is quite simple to remove the stock stand and fit the Rally Raid stand. The only tricky bit is fitting the heavy duty spring. If you have enough small strips of metal it goes on easily enough, but a straight pull is a challenge.
The stand itself is very well made. Better than stock, both in fit and finish. It is 240g heavier, but in my opinion it's worth it.

The spring puller tool works fine. You were using it at 90 deg to the spring. If you pull it in line with the spring you will get it first time. I'm 66 and not as strong as I used to be but I managed. Put the bike in gear and sit on the floor facing forwards with your right knee behind the rear wheel. Use the tool and pull the spring onto the lug. Tough but it works. Surprised Raid Raid haven't mentioned it.

You’ve made hard work of fitting the spring. Top tips - pop a washer over the loop of spring and then use a small ratchet strap from foot-peg around the foot of the stand to stretch the spring. Takes a matter of seconds to fit.

I did. Luckily the internet is there to remind me of this. I think I now have 12 ways to fit a spring, all different! Perhaps I should do a video and try them all out!

Just fitted mine and glad i watched your video first. To get the old spring off i used your method but found an easy way to fit the new spring. I got a small ratchet strap and used it to stretch the new spring between the uprights of a storage rack in my garage after measuring how long it need to be to go on. I then filled the extended spring with 5p coins before releasing the tension. The spring then fitted easily and the coins fell out when i rotated the stand to its tightest spot. I would advise anyone doing this with just the spring hook to be real careful that the bike is well secured or supported by a friend as it could fall off whatever stand you are using if your not careful.

The first thing I thought when I saw the T handle spring puller was "wear gloves". Absolutely LOVE the coin trick! My 1985 BMW R80 has the best side stand. When you sit on the bike and straighten it up, the stand swings up so you can never forget it.

@@PeakMotorcycles As a teenager, I had "wrench rash" on my knuckles too many times. In my later years, I would don a pair of leather gloves if a slip seemed highly likely.

My stock kickstand also had a lil play in it. I replaced it with the 380mm 15in Honda kickstand for the 250L advertised on eBay as Honda CRF300L extended kickstand silver/black. It also had the same amount of play after installed. I was able to use the spring puller to install the two springs, it was tough at first though. I wedged my right hand under/behind the kickstand bottom and used it as leverage to mount spring with puller. New kickstand didn't come with hole drilled for kickstand sensor so I just deleted the sensor.

I've done springs like that with a good medium sized vice grip and gloves. Lock in a bit below the long hook and just push with both hands. Not Channellocks, not pliers...vice grip.

Thanks for the video. I believe the CRF300L and Rally should have had longer side stands. I was amazed how much my CRF300L leaned over even when it was new. I have added the SRC side stand extension to my bike, but I am happy to see a company selling a longer side stand. I have got a lot of busted knuckles from putting the side stand springs on my motorcycles. I finally started wearing leather gloves and shoving as many pennies in the spring as I can. Thanks

Try doing this the next time you take the spring off . Instead of fighting with the spring after you put the bolt in on the stand ,hook the spring in place on both ends and then put the stand in the slot and add the screw . With the stand down you can add the switch and finish tightening it up . Put a screw driver through the bottom of the stand so you can stand on it and tilt the bike until the hole lines up . Its a lot easier to do it that way than the way you did it .

@@PeakMotorcycles There might be a dozen ways but the way I'm telling you is the easiest. Your using your weight by standing on it to hold it down on the ground and the weight of the bike to expend the spring until the stand falls into the slot .

Finally a solution. Show of hands , how many grabbed their 300's the first time they leaned over on the stand? I did it at the dealership,and was convinced I dropped a new bike in front of the shop. The salesman laughed and said he did when he brought it out.

i found that when i did my old bike put the spring on first before the bolt in the stand then u can use the stand as a lever to stretch the spring

easy way is to get an old broken screw driver, grind the end in a U shape to go over the stud the spring goes over, and slid it through the spring then over the stud the spring goes on, the screwdriver will be at about a 45 to 60 degree angle just straighten it out and slide the spring over the stud, works great and is very easy to do, and keep the screwdriver for future use. This method is very easy and once you have the screwdriver made also very quick spring on in less than a minute. Have even done double springs using this method.

Or there are spring pliers same that you would use on drum brakes most wouldn’t have them but us old timers that have done rear brakes are selves are watching going this is a half second job either way you got it done at that’s all that matters. And I’m sure if you had a tool you wouldn’t have went this route.

@@Mathew187187 I had a quick look and I guess on a drum brake, you have the outside of the drum to put the non-spring end of the pliers. I’ll see if there’s a similar location to pull against on the stand.

No sir this is a tool that you put in the opening of the spring 1/4 turn and it removes it and for install you would pull on the long side thanks for your replies I’ve watched your videos a lot even when you weigh stuff lol. Keep it up I watch all 300l rally content I can find to learn and if I have advice I spread it as well the dumbest people I know are ones that don’t at least here out other options to better them selves. And I believe you are like me always willing to hear someone out and decide if there way is better way or not.

I think the penny thing works well for most that are that shape. I saw a Triumph yesterday that had quite a fine, twin spring setup that would probably need a different approach.

Your little trick works wonders! I have a spring tool that actually works well because it has a larger handle that offers more leverage and better ergonomics. I bought it for removing even bigger springs on commercial lawnmower decks. But you still have to position yourself in line with the spring and almost put your weight into the pull if you are not strong enough to do it with pure brute force. It’s never easy., and your right, you definitely need to secure the entire machine before attempting removing/replacing the spring. Too bad they didn’t offer a stand with a slightly wider foot, I would probably loose the little red pad they supply you with. Itchy boots just recently cracked her kickstand in half, so that incident definitely proved where at least one of the weak spots is in the stand...

Hi, a guy from the CRF300UK FB group has an engineering company and made up some bolt on feet, I put one one those on and it seems to work quite well. I think RR wanted to offer a better, and longer, sidestand that had the same foot as stock so folks could add their own foot or leave it as is. Good to know about IB’s failure, I should catch up with where she’s at. Thanks!

It helps a lot if you seat on the end of the bike inline with the spring, then that spring size is no problem using your puller tool. With your body position no chance...

Agreed. It looks and fits better too. Had a great day out today riding various bikes; my CB1000R, a Yamaha R7, Triumph Tiger Sport and a Royal Enfield 350 Meteor. One was a real surprise.

@@enduromotorradtouren Meteor 350. 200kg and 20hp. Expectations were low, but I couldn’t stop smiling. Enough torque in most gears and it chugs along. Steering is surprisingly good and it turns in well. Riding position is comfortable and the pedals aren’t too far forward. I had a great time!

@@enduromotorradtouren indeed. I would never have imagined a bike like that could be so much fun to ride. Apparently it was MCN’s (Motorcycle News) Best Retro Bike of the Year for 2021. There’s some competition in that category, so it’s no small achievement.

I was having issues with the smaller bolt holding the switch that goes into the larger 14mm bolt not coming out. Initially, I thought it was all one piece until I watched this. Then, that damn spring! That was as hard or harder than the centerstand spring on my 2017 Africa Twin! I have soreness in muscles I didn't know I had! I have a different spring puller with a triangle shaped handle that let me get a bot better grasp and pull harder and could almoat get it with that, but I still used a screwdriver to lever the spring onto the peg. What a PITA!

I was just reading some of those suggestions and some seem pretty good, they make me feel kind of dumb having struggled with it so much. Almost makes me want to take the spring off and try those other methods...almost.

It does say 20mm in the title, which is how much longer than stock it is. Does that help? How that translates to the bike itself varies depending on suspension and loading. I can measure it if you like but only if you say what you need that information for.

Hi Andre. Finally got a suitable day to fit the SMART IAT to my 250 Rally. Definately makes the bike smoother, but I need to get some more miles with it to be able to give a better opinion. Its really easy to fit, just need to be careful with the 3 torx bolts and positioning the new o ring. Also its important to note the postion of the TP sensor when you remove the old one.

You don't need the spring puller. With the stand up, hook the spring on the top position and a loop of heavy wire on the lower spring hook that is 1cm short of the assembly at the stand foot. Stick a large screwdriver through the loop and into the stand foot. Use screwdriver as leaver to stretch spring and slip it onto stand. Cut wire loop and pull it away. Bingo. Done

I can picture you now… searching the garage for random pieces of thin metal objects to wedge in that spring. I honestly would have lost my mind and probably would have bounced a tool or two off the walls. Lol

I just spent hours putting things in the spring in just the right way to get it on my bike lol. I had washers in every place they could go but still it wasn't enough. But if you push the stand upwards hard the distance gets just a little shorter and it was enough. Now just the front and back RR suspension lol. Its gonna be a pain.

I’d like to get that stand. The improved and more robust pivot point is reason enough to change to it. I have not adjusted the suspension upward on my CRF, so this stand might not be a good idea for my particular bike. Also, it looks like I’d have to order it from the U.K. Thanks for the instal how-to, and for the information.

we use spring pullers on truck brakes they work but you need gloves and a lot of force to get them on and off.

The nice thing about the internet, sometimes, is that you learn all the right ways. Apparently this isn’t it. Better suggestions include: 1. Sitting at the back of the bike, one leg either side of the back wheel and pulling it on backwards from there. 2. Tape round the long end of the spring and mole grips to pull it on. 3. Using a thin screwdriver and it just clicks on 1&2 might have been options for me, not sure 3 would work for me as it was 10-12mm short. I’m sure other options will be suggested.

Was intent on getting this from Rally Raid as the stock stand is inadequate. Added it to cart, input info, got to shipping… $133 to ship a $121 part. One option for shipping, no other options. I’m sure it’s a quality stand, but does it have the mass of a dwarf star to justify the shipping costs? Got one out of Thailand for $100 and free shipping. Rally Raid can f*ck off, and then f*ck right off. Outrageous…

In your engineer opinion, would his stand be too long for a stock height Rally which I have. The stock stand is too short for sure in its stock configuration. I do need a slightly longer stand and also want to add a bigger footplate as your other vids shows. Those two look like a great combination

I’m an electronic engineer 😉, so not sure my opinion is valid, but a better measure would be to put a 20mm piece of wood or stone under your stock sidestand. If too upright, then not worth it. If it is still leaning ok, then go for it!

I think it’s the same fitting. What I’m not sure of is how the lengths compare. The 250 and the 300 have different frames so you’d probably have to compare stock 250 and 300 side stands to be sure. If they are the same length, then yes, this would be 20mm longer on the 250 too. Rally Raid might be able to tell you for certain.

Do you find the stock sidestand is too short with stock suspension? There is something like 30% static sag on the stock suspension, so I’m not sure if making the stand 20mm longer would leave it too upright?
