In this gear update the 6.5 Guys review the 3M Peltor Sport Tactical 500 Electronic Earmuffs, which were sent to us for test and evaluation. For more information about this product take a look at the product page on Amazon.com at this link:

Note: To address comments regarding comparisons against MSA Sordin's NRR rating, The blog "Trevor on the Trigger" has done research into the MSA Sordin's NRR rating and has a good write up here: trevoronthetrigger.wordpress.... The punch line is: "it’s basically impossible to tell at a glance which [frequency spectrum] standard was used in calculating the NRR of a given product. The solution is to seek out the test data published by top-tier ear-pro manufacturers, which shows noise reduction performance at 125/250/500/1000/2000/4000/8000 Hz, and compare it to the peak frequencies of the kind of noise we’re trying to block".
In actual use the Peltors performed the job of noise attenuation very well. However, if you plan to use ear pro all day such as at PRS or NRL match, we would always recommend "double-up" with foamy ear plugs underneath and it's important to note that even though the gel cups on this model are comfortable - they can become uncomfortable to wear after 5-6 hours of continuous use.

I can see in an instrutional course if everyone is using blue tooth the instructors can use a blue tooth transmitter to communicate with the class clearly and loudly.

busterb002 Great thought! Better communication on the range. Who can argue with that.

Going back to the comment about head size, I set a 7-3/4 hat and I found these to be very comfortable. These are super comfy with the gel ear cups.

Yeah imma have to disagree on the net rating. 26-27 is the highest you will find without going to a passive “muff”. By comparison a MSA Sordin is around the lowest on the market at 19. If sordin is the gold standard, the peltor blows them out of the water on sound suppression.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm considering these two sets atm... I guess not much has changed in 4 years

@@eunit14to this day I still wear the peltor 500. They are a bigger form factor but they are the best on the market in my opinion. I ran peltors, and even silenx in the military and I'll not go back.

26DB NRR is amongst the very best electronic hearing protection on the market. The MSA Sordins are 18 NRR by comparison. If you want better noise protection you'll need to switch to a physically larger set of ear muffs, which will likely not be electronic.

Looking online, there are dozens of ear pro models available from a variety of manufacturers that offer NRR ratings higher than 26db. As we stated in this review, we believe 26 db is certainly an acceptable rating and rates very well in comparison to other electronic ear hearing protection. As for the MSA Sordins, and its NRR - we would definitely recommend doubling up on ear protection (wear foam earplugs with the muffs).

Dozens? A quick filter on Brownells shows 5, all Pro Tacs. Walkers has a model that is 27. As far as I can tell, 26db is pretty good unless you want a huge can on your ear, and that generally doesn't work too well for rifle use. Can you share some reputable models?

12 gauge shotgun blast is about 155 dB, so a NRR of 18 would be questionable--especially if you shoot high round-count clay sports.

Idk why guys my age can't seem to adjust. The Peltor 500s have better NRR than MSA Sordin Extreme Pro-X. If you're going to critique them for that you have to complain about the Sordins. Also, MSA makes a pair of Bluetooth Extreme Pro-x. These guys are like, what's this new fangled Bluetooth they're putting on ear pro. Perhaps someone has a family and needs to take a call if there is an emergency. I have a pair of Sordins so not in a hurry to buy the Peltors but was looking at the Bluetooth for that very reason. The price point is much more attractive than Sordins.

Bluetooth connectivity on ear pro is certainly a nice feature to have for those who need it. However, for us - where we typically shoot it's not a function we would use and it adds to the overall cost.
@jlastre

6.5 Guys as I stated you’ll have to make that critique of the MSA model that has Bluetooth as well. Further there simply is the Peltor 300 w/o Bluetooth if you don’t like the cost. Something you failed to mention.

Keep in mind Peltor provided this product for review - we didn't select it. We actually liked this model very well and in fact Steve is currently using this set of ear pro for most of his shooting (although not using the bluetooth feature). Our product reviews are not paid endorsements and reflect our own views and observations about a product - not everyone may agree but we appreciate hearing input from viewers if we may over looked something.

Add on the add on gel cups and a headband cover and you have a very nice set of muffs I like mine, only thing I could pick on is the over all size of the ear cups might be a issue with cheek welds.

How is the noise suppression? I have owned several brands of electronic ear muffs and find some brands don't shut down fast enough. I like Peltor Tach 6 and Sport tach. I find the Howard Leigh muffs have to have to volume turned down or gun shots hurt my ears. I tried a pair of inexpensive Walkers from Cabelas and had to return them for the same reason.

I don't know why this guy is so focused on taking a call while shooting... obviously you wouldn't do that but taking a call while needing hearing protection... yes you might. If other people are shooting or there is the potential for shooting and the wife calls it may be an emergency and that feature gives you the ability to find out without leaving the range or the woods and still protect your hearing.

I think you guys are narrow in your thinking regarding the Bluetooth feature...the assumption is that only shooters use noise reduction hearing protection. Imagine if you were say, working on a construction site, or in your workshop, instead of listening to Ricky Martin on the boom box all day, perhaps some soothing death metal is your bag...well have at it, and you can answer your phone.

Its not the case that you'll take a call while shooting, its the fact that if you are at a range, you'll most likely have your head set on even when you're not on the line & at that point you'd be able to take or make a call, not necessarily while shooting.

It should be noted that the gel ear cups that are available add to the NR rating because they do a far better job sealing around the ears when wearing glasses. It’s VERY noticeable.

I wish they would have mentioned that you can only buy the Peltors in the over-the-head band model and NOT the behind the head model (like the MSA Sordins). The behind the head bands are slightly tighter giving a better seal. They can also be used with hard hats and helmets.

I'm deciding between the the 100 and 300, can you recommend which headband is more comfortable? I hear the hard plastic on the 300 can be a bit stiff (I have a shaved head and may or may not wear a hat). I'm considering getting the 100's (about $30-40 cheaper) and adding gel cups.

This video seemed rushed to be made without a lot of preparation, to thoroughly understand and present the pro’s, con’s, and to brainstorm all of the uses for the BT. If I were 3M Peltor I’d be quite pissed at how under-represented my product was on this video.
