In Part 1 Paul Cangialosi takes apart a T5 Non world class or T5-NWC 5 speed. The 5 speed transmission is from 1984 - 1987 F body Camaro or Firebird. The technique can be used in any T5 NWC 5 speed including those used in the Jeep, AMC Eagle, Chevrolet S10 blazer and Nissan Turbo 280ZX / 300 ZX.

I want to thank every for the wonderful heart felt comments. It really means so much to me. Like all videos a common question often comes up. One was "why did you throw out a cover that could be fixed by welding or plugging it?" If I am working on a job where the component could be easily sourced used or new I am not going to waste my time as well as the customer's money ( which they pay by the hour ) to give them a part that may be compromised by welding. These are very thin die cast covers and tend to warp when welded unless of course one uses proper preheat methods and bolts it to a case during the repair. I have bins of covers as well as new covers in stock because they do get dented and cracked often from people damaging them removing and installing the transmission. In this situation it was not worth the time to repair.

Great video! I bought a T5 conversion for my 1967 MGBGT, to the orginal engine (4 cylinder) from Dave at Fab-Tek. In the process of making another trans tunnel plate (it enters the cabin differently in the car, can't use the orginal) for the shifter wirh my son. I am also re-wiring the entire car and taking advantage of the engine out. Slow an steady progress.

out of curiosity would it have been a bad option to use tap to thread that hole and put a bolt in it cut down? that seems like a quick easy option to re-use the part but I have no damn idea what I'm talking about I'm literally just curious

Condolences Paul and nice to see you're back. I don't know what upgrades are available for a T5 but on T5 WC I have it has carbon fiber rings and some billet aluminum upgrades. It sits behind a SBC 355 vortec roller in an 86 Grand Prix. A must be upgrade is to get rid of the stock shifter. I have a Hurst with stops that prevents overshifting unlike the sloppy stock shifter.

This is great. Moving on to part 2 in a minute. I have a T5 from a 3.4 Camaro that is going into my MGB behind a Fiero 2.8. The MG forums all say that the V6 1st gear is too short with our 3.90 rear end, so I plan to rebuild the box and install a V8 first gear. This series will definitely be my guide for the process.

This is a great video! I've got a lot of experience with mustang world class t5, but had not had the opportunity to work on a non-world-class Camaro T5. I have one in an LS swapped 81 Ford Fairmont. He uses a combination of GM main case, 26 spline input shaft, 27 spline output shaft mustang tail shaft extension and shifter plate assembly. Works very well. And has lasted up until a few days ago when I broke the input shaft shifting aggressively in the third gear.

Welcome back, Paul. Although the last few months were clearly not pleasant, you appear to be in good spirits. Many years ago, you taught me that the shiny synchronizer surface on the gear should be scuffed so that the new brass synchronizer ring will grab it better. Since the mainshaft is bad, and 2nd and 3rd gear are not perfect, you could mention there is an option to use a WC mainshaft and WC mainshaft gears, but retain the NWC cluster gear. However, I know the purpose of this video is to remain NWC-specific.

I worked as an engineer for plasma and flame spray equipment. Not a good choice for repair on shafts that are subjected to the high PSI needles produce. Best is hard welding. I used to grande these transmissions back in the day with my 85 fox body mustang when we would street race in south fl ... and back then they were cheap and easy to buy used and would regularly just swap them out when third gear would take a dump from racing around town .... lol it got to the point I would have 5 or 6 of them just laying around to swap in and got so god at replacing them I would keep a spare one in the trunk of the car and could have it swapped out of my mustang in about 20min where ever it blew up to get me home lol lol... very weak transmission .... and should be tossed out and send to the bottom of the ocean... lol ....

T5 WC and Non WC were designed for their intended use and very little more. On the V8 units just remember what the Horsepower and torque ratings of the engines of the cars these transmissions were in. That is what they are rated for.

Welcome back! Informative teardown, bummer on the shaft & cover. That hole looked like it had a rubber plug of sorts. I wonder if the unit was leaking, and somebody was able to shoot some oil through there every once in a while (from the top or through the floor). Random: I see a large can of linseed oil in the background (e.g. 33:30). Does that have automotive application, or is it from a different project? I can honestly say I've never used the stuff outside of paint and wood conditioning. I hope making videos helps get you guys back in the groove.

Sorry to hear that, Paul. I've been there man. Random question: Just replaced my Dodge NV4500 and the newly rebuilt one has a "crunchy" first gear. Got about 1,000 miles on it now but, it doesn't seem to be going away. Thoughts?

Could be a clutch release issue especially if you are doing it from a stop

Sad to hear of your painful losses. Life sure isn't easy. In fact, it's a lot of misery for many and some get hit with it when they're pretty young. I guess we all cope the best way we know how. It's a daily process and it never gets easy no matter how many years go by. Moving along, your accent reminds me of when I lived in W. Sayville and flew night freight for Key Bank out of Islip. I'm curious where in the NYC area you are from? One thing I miss about not doing LGA anymore is hearing that distinctive accent. 😂 Great video btw, I'm learning tons! I'm looking to do a T-56 in the future if I can get it out of the car on my own.
