The Roland TR-06 Drumatrix drummachine in 21 minutes

We take a look at all the sounds and functions of the new boutique series drum machine Roland TR-06. Also, we compare it to the original Roland TR-606, and for that we used a Roland SBX-1 syncbox to convert the midi-out clock of the TR-06 to a din-sync24 signal for the TR-606.

As I’ve just got one, I couldn’t work out when I followed along with this tutorial why the exact same pattern sounded different when I punched it in. I figured it was a shuffle or swing setting and I did a factory reset which didn’t make a difference. I finally found the shuffle setting which you access by holding the Tempo button down when playing a pattern. My pattern 1 slot was set to a shuffle setting of 20. Setting it to zero then it’s dead-on 134 BPM every step and a match to the feel of this tutorial’s pattern. Hopefully that helps anyone with the same issue!

4:26 couldn’t really hear the difference even with good ear buds in my ear. Maybe I’m tone deaf. But good review.

Wow, the 06 doesnt really sound close in this video. The sizzling in the hats and the cymbal is completely off. I had really hoped it would sound like the original. The original sounds exactly like my old TR606

The hi-hats and cymbals on the 06 don't sound like the original however with all the added features I found the 06 more usable and cleaner sounding. But, I would get both of them if I had the chance :)

What's weird is that the TR-06 sounds EXACTLY like MY old TR606! The genuine one in this video sounds awful to my ears. I must confess that my one had the mod where someone drilled a hole in the front of the case so you could tweak the snare with a screwdriver. I never knew what the original factory setting was, so I just left it where it sounded best to me. I no longer have that device but played it so much I remember exactly how it sounds - and it sounds exactly like the TR-06, not the old, genuine one in this video. It does make me wonder if there might be a range of differences between different TR606's? - and if there is also a possibility that ageing changes the sound? I'd also bet that the Roland guys listened to a whole heap of units and picked the one in best condition.

@@jeremymurray-wakefield8011 I haven't owned a tr-606 before, but I recognized there is something old/worn out on the one in this video. How do I know? I bought a Boss DR-110 - sounded great, then I tried to mod it.. being new to electronics it didn't go well. My cymbals/hihats ended up sounding 'broken' like in the video here, whereas before I opened the 110 it sounded bright and crisp.

@@gavinpeters9531 Interesting. That was actually my first drum machine when I was a teenager. Loved the sound of it, but the lack of sync was a shame and it wasn't long before I moved over to the 606. Odd thing is I don't know whatever happened to it. I didn't really sell gear back then so it's probably in my Dad's actic (and likely ruined by a rotting battery if past experience is anything to go by!) Once this lockdown is over I'll have to raid that attic to see what other gems I've got stored in there!

@@darakilicoglu Same here.. TR-06 is a great machine, its a shame the hihats dont sound as good as the TR606 but the extra features are SWEET! On a side note the hats on the original TR606 in this video dont sound right either.. they sound pitched up or something
