The residents passing zoning ordinances not wanting the park to build rides that would draw visitors are part of why they closed the park. Reap what you sow.

Cedar falls offered to buy it from six flags. Six flags first said no, then agreed because they where in debt. Cedar falls had alll that land seaworld had, and chose to build a shitty water park. Six flags world of adventure was killing cedar point because it was cheaper and they had amazing animal shows. And instead of building awesome new rides on that land and owning two great theme parks... they decided to close it down, without any warning. Which is why I refuse to go to cedar point. When I want to go to an amusement park I drive out of state.

+Tia Fogle It's Cedar Fair, not Cedar Falls. And I highly recommend Cedar Point. You don't know what you're missing. And that was not the reason it closed. Cedar Fair bought it for the reason any corporation buys something: for more money. They bought it and it wasn't profitable. They didn't want to pour money into it and not get any in return so they closed it. Many amusement parks close because of lack of profit. They may have bought it to get rid of competition but they weren't planning on closing it from the beginning. Nobody was going so they had to close it or face financial trouble. And as I said, I recommend Cedar Point. I have been to around 19 amusement parks and Cedar Point is by far the best. It has 17 roller coasters, A LOT of family rides, it is huge, it is beautiful, and it is simply amazing. I'm sorry but Geauga Lake was always mediocre in comparison.

This is heartbreaking . . . I was returning to Sharon (hometown in PA) for the first time in 23 years, and I was hoping to take my wife here for a little R&R while back home. This place was AWESOME at one point.

We LOVED it as a smaller park with wide paths for strollers and LOTS of kiddie rides. When they tried to make it compete with Cedar Point and Crammed in Sea World and more 'stuff', they crowded out the folks who really wanted it, those with small children looking for a day outing.

@i208khonsu
@i208khonsu 10 жыл бұрын
Tinkidink Your average Powerball jackpot is around 70 million annualized over many years. If you want it all at once it's about 70%, or on average this would be about 50 million. After about 40% in taxes this reduces it to 20 million. In contrast Cedar Fairs bought Worlds of Adventure (Geauga Like) for 145 million, and that's considering everything is used. Everything is currently leveled or would need to be demolished and rebuilt. While the 145 million Worlds of Adventure was arguably too big for it's own good you'd probably need to win 300 million (84 million after lump sum and taxes) to rebuild a brand new "old fashioned" Geauga Lake. The problem is when jackpots get to this size they are normally won by several people at one time and is split. But we can still dream :)

That park was amazing. I hate cedar fair!! I had my best childhood memories there! I can't look at it anymore, it's just so depressing to see it! I was recently at "Wildwater kingdom" and I was waiting in line for the slides and I could see The Big Dipper in the ghost town across the way. I'm so disappointed that they would close such an amazing park, I will always miss it :"( R.I.P. Geauga lake-2007

Cedar Fair is reminding me more and more of Premier Ventures, who bought the infamous Rolling Acres Mall in Akron a good two years AFTER the mall closed down and did NOTHING with it except let it continue to sit there and rot while they fought the city of Akron tooth and nail over unpaid property taxes dating back to when the mall was still open...

Unless it's a big indoor resort/hotel like Kalahari etc., people usually don't drive a hundred miles to visit a water park like they do with amusement parks. Soak City and Wild Water Kingdom don't compete with each other on the level Cedar Point and Geauga Lake did. What Cedar Fair should have done was keep Geauga Lake open as a smaller park that complements Cedar Point, like Kennywood and its "little brother" Idlewild in Pennsylvania.

Darlene Burzgierski I have to disagree with you. I'm a resident of the same town and have to say that it is awful having to go by it often. It's constant reminder of when I was a child and had so much fun there. As a nearby resident, my family would often go, but now everyone gets to look a an ugly fence with green tarps hanging over it and a skeleton of a former ride sitting behind it. The least the company can do is get rid of it and let us use it for something else. You won't meet one person here that wants it to stay. Part of the water park is still open but after half an hour, we get bored because there are literally only two water rides: the funnel and some slides. Also there is a kids play section that can be run through in a minute and a wave pool that gets boring quickly. This town is known for preserving nature, and the park skeleton should be cleaned and left to nature.

No, they probably saw a sweet deal on their hands, kept it open for as long as it made money, then shut it down. I went there last when it was a six flags, I hadn't even found out that Cedar Fir bought them until recently. At the premium price they charge at Cedar Point, plus gas, closing this park down isn't going to significantly effect how many people go there.They saw money in keeping it open, the moment that stopped, they stripped it and shut it down. It's a shame, but it is what it is.

I say they just remove all the crumbling buildings and pavement, and let nature reclaim it. Reopen the land to the public as a reservation park like the Metroparks, with canoeing and fishing on the lake, and campsites in the woodsy areas. It would be a far better use than what is there now.

George, did you live here? Why so glum on the town? Aurora is a relatively affluent town, has a great school system, some awesome golf courses and the feel of a small town community with accessibility to Cleveland and Columbus. Albeit the Geauga Lake area is a bit of an eyesore right now, but I am sure the property will be developed at some point. My 2 cents.

MelodicMizeryPs3Vids Take pictures of what? Rust? Dead leaves? Weeds? Concrete? It's atrocious! As a resident, I don't appreciate your comment. No one is allowed on the property and the only thing the company that owns the land does is reinforce the fencing around the property. It's a waste of land, an eyesore, a constant reminder of a better economy and childhood memories, and there is absolutely nothing we can do about it. Oh, and about our 'boring ass little city', our high school alone ranks in the top 10 out of over 21,000 in Ohio and #496 in the country. So don't say we are boring. Our town is also #5 in the state according to 'The Greatest Ohio Towns to Live In' article published yearly.

im sorry for you then, that your a boring person and cant make the best of it. its history. theres plenty of photographers and urban explorers who love stuff like this. Do you have any hobbies at all? prob not. you must be stuck in your tidy little pretty world. you sound like a boring housewife who isnt doing anything to enjoy life at all. I live in cleveland where i am surrounded by abandoned buildings. complaining about ONE eye sore is acting like a cry baby compared to what im dealing with here. oh boo hoo you have to drive past it for 2 seconds when you leave. like its in your way. I have a average of 3 to 8 abandoned houses where i live and blocks of abandoned buildings here. that is something to complain about, but i dont. i make the best of it. when you step out of your shell maybe you can join some of us open minded people. its people like you thats the reason it closed to begin with. i bet when it was open you were one of the soccer moms complaining about the noise from it werent you? well now deal with the empty shell and no income from the visitors

actually it was very profitable until Six Flags sold it to Cedar Fair, their only intentions were to remove competition with Cedar Point hence they closed it, for God's sake this was the world's largest amusement park, largest!!! And Six Flags only sold it because they were in huge debt for overspending across their whole chain, Geauga Lake or Six Flags Worlds of Adventure as it was known was one of its flagship parks
