I know this sounds a bit nutty; but I think the knives you use and carry in your pocket for years take on a little bit of you, You can give a knife away that you used for years to' lets say your son or a good friend' and every time they look and I do mean really look at that knife, They will see you in their mind.

on square 3rd :- You said what I've been thinking for years. I also believe that you don't really own a knife until it "bites" you and you share a big of you with the knife (like a blood brother).

I often carry the slightly larger version of this one called the Stallion #74 in ebony, same look, same feel, lots of cutting power.

Great point about these affordable knifes getting used more. I baby my really nice knives, then tend to leave them home, so why do I even own them? A sub $100, well made slip joint in 1095 gets used constantly, giving enjoyment daily which is why I bought a knife in the first place !

I've been looking somewhere to find it, because I really just love the way it looks overall, but haven't found anywhere that has it in stock anymore, and doesn't have them for inflated prices.

Thanks for the nice video! I like GEC and Bill Howard's way to produce traditional pocket knives. But it's a pity, that it is so hard get GEC knives here in Europe. Northwest Knives is a good source, but beside the shipping costs there are tax and custom duties to pay. And companies like Knives Ship Free, are going to charge $60 to ship a Northwoods!

Great video Randy. Hey, allow me to help you out with the pronunciation of "TIDIOUTE". There are 2 ways to pronounce it. One way is: "TIDD-EEE-YOOT".....that is the way most say it. But the actual way is: "TIDDY- OUT", as in "go OUTside". ( It's not pronounced like the laundry detergent "TIDE"....the proper way to pronounce the first syllable rhymes with "BID" so it's "TIDD" "EEE" "YOOT" ) It is an ancient word from the Iroquois Indians meaning "protrusion of land" like a peninsula. The land that the town of Tidioute is on, is where the Allegheny River does a hairpin turn, and that finger of land inside of that river-bend is where Tidioute is located. Bill Howard first opened the doors to GEC on August 1st, 2006. The old factory needed cleaned up & had been vandalized while it sat vacant. Next, Bill brought in all the old cutlery machinery that he bought from some wise people who bought & kept it themselves. Thank God all that old cutlery machinery wasn't sent to the scrap yard. Bill immediately hired & began training up his workforce & they made approximately 1500 knives nearing the end of 2006, and they first released those 1500 knives to the dealers about March of 2007. I don't see how he pulled all that off in such a short time, but he did. The #73 and the #23 both are a very close copy to the old original Remington "Bullet trappers" from the early 1900's, one of the best heavier-duty trapper patterns. ( And so is the #42 that came after, as well as the brand new #83 that they are making right now. Most younger folks today have no clue just how much you can do with these knives. They are tougher than you may assume. When I was growing up in the 60's & 70's, I cleaned ALL my fish with a #54 Case 2.blade trapper. ( NEVER scale a fish with a nice knife, use a fish scaler or old butter knife.) I cleaned fish for years with that same knife, and it didn't damage that knife in the slightest. I also have many old friends who used the old slip joints to skin & process all sorts of game, including deer & elk. Again, their knives served them well. There is a good reason that traditional knives have been made & used for close to 200 years..........it's because THEY WORK AND THEY WORK WELL. Thanks for the cool video. I enjoyed it!!!

I enjoy all your reviews but love the traditional knife ones. Keep them coming. Do you ever customize traditional knives? If you ever get your hands on a custom slip joint knife I would enjoy seeing a vid on one. Thanks

I'm probably wicked late to the show, but I'd love to see a traditional knife that's able to be one handed (as in opening). I don't know if any exist beside the higonokami or a shaving knife but those don't lock up.

Say Heah, I'. actually researching a knife, One of my Fav's is my E.C.D.C Camillus Silver Sword #836 it's a Canoe Pattern 3blade Slipjoint Pocket Knife. It has the Camillus Silver Sword TM Stainless and hold's a great edge retention, Well a couple of days ago I found a Wilkinson Sword INOX Slipjoint Pocket Knife made in Sheffield, England, very similar except the handle on my Camillus has a wood inlay into a all stainless steel, the Wilkinson Sword has what appears as some sort of fiberglass, or highly polished micarta, it could be some sort of plastic but it's a very nice quality and depends on the light there's some sort of pattern, I can't find any info on it, It was never sharpened and all the blades are sharp, I would like to know some info on it, like the steel type, I don't care about the value, because I only paid $10.00 for it at the pawn shop, but I think it will be a very good whittler, If you could give me any info on it, Please lemme know, , , Thanx in advance, , ,

I'm not him, but GEC's usually come very well sharpened for production knives, they have a flat ground profile, which tapers down to a very fine edge, usually with a comparatively small bevel to other knife companies. Opinels generally have very thin blades, whereas GEC's are variable, and some GEC's are going to be able to meet that thinness as well, for example a northfield 73 scout trapper's last half or quarter blade, it has a swedge that improves performance over something like an Opinel. As to Victorinox and wengers, the spring and blade strength, as well as the sturdiness or lack thereof of the knives mean that you'd be weary of using as much pressure as with the aforementioned brands, but the knives come plenty sharp, though more along the lines of other modern knife brands. Try to find a cheaper northfield #73, a single blade one, if you want a pure user, that would be a fairly good test of the brand in terms of performance.
