Thanks for all the kind comments regarding the Gee Bee and the Clodhopper! And my thanks to Tom/Maxfliart for his work with the camera, editing and musical background. The Gee Bee is going surprisingly well, and I still have a few more trim tweaks and more turns to add to the motor. My Clodhopper was built after seeing a family photo of my father holding a Comet kit built Clodhopper he built back in 1939. It was the latest, hottest contest ship of that era.

Many “old, bold” R/C jockeys shudder at the thought of putting the maiden on a Gee Bee. But here you are, taking to the skies with a rubber free flight Gee Bee! Gorgeous model and lovely flights. Hats off.

Incredibly, this model has retained the flight characteristics of the original and its flight is not much different from the original, excellent work. Regards

love the gee bee! you did an amazing job on it! I think that the gee bee was the most interesting plane that has ever flown, I actually got to see one for real at the fantasy of flight museum in Florida. I think they are beautiful to look at.

Magical! It's like Doolittle, himself, was flying the Gee Bee, a couple of times. Unbelievable performance from such a fat stubby plane. And the cloud Hopper, that's what it's all about.

Whether full size or scale, I'm always a little amazed just how great Gee Bee's can fly! I can remember watching Delmar Benjamin do a full aerobatic routine in his R-1 replica 25+ years ago, and it was breathtaking. I have a little E-Flite UMX R/C model that literally can do any aerobatic maneuver in the book, and flies like it's on rails. Doug's version is quite lovely👍.

The two favorite subjects I have personally built myself. Both of mine flew great, too and my Clodhopper went OOS. I loves watching yours, Doug! my Clodhopper was the R/N models kit for FAC, non-folders. Great flyers. My GeeBee was electric FF. It was from the Hewitt plan, as well.

Duke, ahh, good to hear our build lists align rather closely! The Clodhopper was a ship my dad built as a kid from the comet kit. That was the impetus for my build at the full 47” span. And I sure do use a reliable DT on each and every flight. As to the Gee Bee, there is still quite a bit of potential for longer flights. These flights seen were still in its early days of trimming. I’m sure I’ll be flying it again soon.

That GeeBee model is more stable than the original plane .. ha ha! The last flight was very realistic, as it moved out pretty fast. Great memories upon seeing the old Comet kit Ad. I built a LOT of Comet kits (and Berkeley & Scientific) ... complete with "die crunched" parts! The one blade folding prop was interesting to watch .. never saw one in action, but the Clodhopper flies very well. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!

The Gee Bee looked very realistic...sort of a nose down attitude as it circled not very high. Maximum scale points! It gives the indoor flyers a run for their money. I have looked at the plans for the Clodhopper longingly more than once. Thanks for posting!
@Blitzencoupe
@Blitzencoupe 3 жыл бұрын
I’m pleased you picked up on the nose down/tail high flight attitude. Part of the magic for me is the way a plane “sets” in the air. I specifically added a good bit of incidence to the wing relative to the horizontal centerline to achieve that look. I believe it would have looked a bit wonky if it were to be flying nose- high!

I wouldn't have thought the Gee Bee design would lend itself to rubber powered flight. I assume the original relied on massive amounts of horse power to fly.

Beautiful R-1 build. Amazingly stable with the clear plastic add. Looks like it runs level at high power, climb at medium and glide to stalls unpowered? Looks fast in the video. Clodhoppers flew as expected. Easy to lose on a high thermal day!
@Blitzencoupe
@Blitzencoupe 3 жыл бұрын
Dennis: you, sir, have a good eye. For these flights, I had removed some nose weight, and the result is indeed a stall as the power runs out. A bit too much downthrust compensates for that lack of nose weight -but only when under power as seen in these flights. I plan to add back some of the nose weight, and correspondingly reduce the Downthrust. That nose weight should return the smooth transition from power phase to the glide phase I had established earlier. The motor still has a number of turns to add. I was at approximately 1100 for these flights, but will be advancing up closer to 1600-1700 as I get closer to truly getting this ship “dialed in”. Thanks for your comment!

Your bent rib construction lends itself to any model! Did you use magnets to attach the landing gear?
@maxfliart
@maxfliart 3 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Love the sliced rib approach for many projects. For the LGs, Doug used a combination of a hard balsa tongue, then four monofilament posts & dental bands. All work together for lateral flex and fore / after movement. I'll see about posting photos from Doug.
