Hi Guys, I'm an old train modeler. In the early eighties we used to make this stuff from cheap household plaster and loft insulation. Coz most of our layouts were in our parents lofts it was readily available!! The posh kids used Polyfiller - I could only dream of using Polyfiller. The courser rockwool (loft insulation) was the best stuff. One downside was you had to make up the plaster fairly sloppy so it did take an age to dry - when you're 10 anything over 10 mins is an age.

Well, this kind of terrain is useless for wargaming. You can't place any models on top without them falling over. That is why a book is better than this, even though this looks absolutely amazing.

Your videos are excellent. I’ve found a nylon fiber that is cut to 1/8th inch or so length that is sold(in New Mexico anyway) at ceramic shops that is used to strengthen clay, plaster, and cement. It works great.

I use sawdust dyed with food colour for the grass, you can get some cheap pound shop sponges and put them in a blender to chop it up before dyeing that the desired color too, makes flock, expanding foam for rocks but that means cutting the bobbly parts off before doing anything else...it takes longer but is brilliant. I'm inspired by what you've done and will be getting some of that sculpting plaster

Luke, Landrel Brown did a vid on making home made sculptamold 2 years ago. He used cellulose house insulation from(USA) Lowe's. Anther trick that would help slow down drying time, is to add some lemon juce or vinegar. I hope this helps! Keep up the great vids, love them!

just found your channel, nice little vid, I've been using that product for years, Love it, it's great for what I do, (generally a 1 tile dio of a vehicle and crew or the like) , one thing I do is save my wood sawdust then after it's dry I will put it in a bag then use a spray can of light green or whatever color I need, it works great as a cheap flock, and I just use a combo/mix of water and Elmers school glue and wood glue.

He mentioned earlier that he would seal it down with PVA. However, I think he used isopropal alcohol to reduce the surface tension, then he applied scenic glue, made from diluted modge podge (glue and water). Luke Towan has done a video on it and uses it in all his videos.

Lukes Aps I didn't work in the department that made it. It was about 20 years ago when I worked there. All I can remember is that it was only a few things thay make it and I think it was some kind of fluff that they added hardening powers to. I do know that the stuff they used was kind of toxic. They also make clays there. Cancer was not unheard of from people who worked there 10+ years.

Sculptamold has been my preferred terrain material since the '80s. (Won several dio awards back then.) Texture is like celuclay (good stuff too) but drys much faster. Seems to be a mixture of celuclay and plaster. Recommended.

What ratio do you use H20:PVA when you spray it down to seal it? I've had mixed results securing grit and flock using a 75/25 mix and even a 50/50 mix, do you tend to use more PVA than that to prevent it from flicking off in use during a game?
@Presbiter
@Presbiter 6 жыл бұрын
never do more than a 50:50, what you have to do is to steer or shake the mix so that the 2 components are properly mixed. If you dont then either you get to much water out of it or contrary to that it might tend to build glue blobs, depending on which of the two components are nearer to the suckin device in your bottle. Hope that helps.
@MrCowboy6588
@MrCowboy6588 6 жыл бұрын
Presbiter that's what I've been doing, I have a small cosmetics sprayer that's a 50/50 mix and even when shaken thoroughly to mix, and sprayed to seal, I'm finding that stuff flicks and chips off more easily than I'd expect in game. Nothing too crazy, mind you, I'm just always looking for a better more permanent solution to sealing in grit and flock

Lukes Aps I used to love heroquest and after a while the cardboard floor marker/map layout pieces would peel off and spoil. I remember having a go at some of my own, replicating the official image as close as I could in 3d. I think I used thin ply for the actual floor and combinations of polystyrene, milliput and filler. I kinda cast the filler in a mold I made for pillars and certain walls. It worked ok but was very crumbly and didn't last long. I was wondering, out of interest only as I don't think I'll be trying it myself any time soon, but have you done much casting for warming? Would you ever opt for it over, say, a few layers of grout/whatever over a bit of card (or something) to reduce the amount of stuff you have to use? I found doing it that way for pillars (in particular) cracked and crumbled even faster. Admittedly we're talking a good couple of decades ago now and specialist materials could be hard to come by on a budget. Any thoughts, please let me know mate!
