I have all three of these lenses and agree with your assessment. I think the 12mm is a fantastic lens. As you say it has great build quality and gives brilliant results, but is a bit larger and heavier, so I tend not to take it with me as much as others. For travel I take the 10mm 2.0 Laowa, 15mm 1.7 Pana Leica, and 14-140 Panasonic zoom. Still a big fan of MFT, with no plans to change.

Thank you for the insight. For still photos, do you observe a significant difference in the colors or bohkeh between the 12 and 15? I am choosing between them for a G9 taking product photos at about 2-3 ft. Thanks

I've had a G9 for a while now. The camera is still so good and they're giving it away for $997 which is crazy considering the build and features. I'm not going FF either and may even pick up another body at this price for keeping exclusively for video.

Greetings from Perth Australia. I found your channel from You tube recommendations, and have just subscribed. I have been shooting with Micro 4:3 now for over 10 years. I love the system. I have all these lenses as well as the 20mm pancake lens. I use these for still photography, underwater, and hiking in nature. I could not agree more with you about how great all these are. I do not use the 12mm as much as I thought I would, as this is heavy to lug around for a long hike, but it is an amazing lens, like a total light sink, especially when photographing the milky way. Another lens I love is the 20mm 1.7 - the ver 1 that is noisy and slow, but hell is that a great lens. It gets more use than any other lens, when I am out and about. If I don’t know what lens to use, just bung that one on. Thank you for sharing the love, and I look forward to discovering more of your videos.

mate - that's an awesome review. I'm looking for a lens to pair with my Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mk II for use with KZfaq vids (mounted on a tripod). I'll be shooting inside with background that's about 5-8 feet behind and wanting heaps of bokeh to blur that messy home! Most of the time I'm going to use a Zhongyi Mitakon 17mm f/0.95 because, like you, I don't bob forwards / backwards much. But for when I need autofocus, that 12mm f/1.4 seems like the one to go for, out of these three. But I really like how you explain what each lens is suited to. Truth be told, I think they're all cracking lenses - the focus on them is great but without a doubt the 12mm has the fastest autofocus. Really appreciate you taking the time to create this vid - good on ya mate :)

I have the 15mm and 25mm and only really do stills. For me, the 25mm is a standout lens, great value, it focuses as quick as anything I have and I'm always pleased with the results. I got the 15mm as a walkabout lens on a GX9 although, don't be fooled anyone, it's still not pocket sized! Nice to have the choice and now you've got me thinking about the 12mm which is a length I use a lot for landscapes on my 12-60 Leica zoom.

I use my G9 & PL lenses for travel photography & mostly for stills. I did purchase the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 for low light situations & also because it is stated to to be weather resistant whereas the Panasonic 15mm is not. I keep wishing that Panasonic would weather seal the 15mm so I could save the weight (4oz vs 14.3). By the way the Sigma 16mm has proven to be a very good lens for stills in low light. Living in coastal Florida and traveling to places like Iceland & the Orkneys the weather sealing is important to me. M4/3 is the best and though I do still have my FF Nikon Kit I’ll never go back to traveling with it. Thanks for the informative video.

Mate, this is a really good comparison. If the rumoured Panasonic Leica 9mm F1.7 is released would be great to see how it compares with these and the wide angle zooms. It looks really promising: wide, small, fast, light and relatively cheap!

Great, thanks for this - I've had my eye on that 12mm just for lower light and vlogging - I still think that the 15mm is a bit tight for the look I'm after while out and about. I'm currently swapping between the 12-35 2.8 and Laowa 7.5 2.0 (my real estate lens) but I like the idea of a wide lens with large aperture. Too bad there's nothing bigger than 12mm with low light...

I own the 15mm f/1.7 and the 25mm f1.7, for use on my G7 and G9. I've converted my G7 to a "webcam". I use the 15mm for my webcam lens and it's perfect for that. Any time I go out with my G9, I'm likely to take the 15mm along. I don't see myself shelling out the big bucks for that 12mm f1.4, especially since I have a Rokinon/Samyang 12mm F2.0. It's a nice lens and a good value, but a bit heavy. Great video, and it confirms that I'm on track with my choices of focal distances.

Thank you for the lens reviews. I have watched them several times as well as others. I am not a pro photographer but use a G9 + 42.5 Leica nocticron for product manuals, marketing and documentation. Mostly stills but starting on some simple video. All in whatever natural light is around,. This combination provides great photos of our products and the colors remind me of 35 mm high contrast pro film. I don't edit except for for when the image file size is too large for some situations. I need a closer in lens to take photos of the 2 x 3 ft product. Really like the physical size and general specs of the 15 mm but wonder if it will provide the other, harder to quantify image anesthetics from the 42.5 noctcron or if the 12 is required? Prefer to not loose the straight lines of the product if possible. Thanks

I have the pan/leica 15 and it’s very sharp but, as you mentioned, the focus ring is a bit difficult to locate without looking plus the aperture ring always always moves when attaching or removing the lens. I really fancied the sigma 16mm f1.4 because it’s bigger and is well thought of but could I justify both?? Then I remembered the one lens that I never used (the Pan/Leica 45mm Macro) and traded that in for a used Sigma 16mm and paid like £50, hooray!

You said it. Every time I look at any so-called shortcomings of my G9, I look at other brands and say to myself, "Nah, theirs is not as ergonomic, feature-packed, at a reasonable price for me at least. Loved Panny's since I bought my FZ30 way back. I'm married to many lenses in the Lumix/Leica brand so if anything, I'm waiting for a G9 successor. 30MP like the GH6, BLI sensor and it's over! Happy Shooting JL.

Hi Sadik, thanks for the comments and kind words. I trust the autofocus more with these lenses and I really love how small they are as well. So glad I came across this video! Currently have the 25mm F1.7, the 14mm F2.5 Pancake and 12-60mm F3.5 in my arsenal along with a GX8 (main camera) and GX1 (2nd camera for more angles) I take pictures and do holiday vlogging (for myself really not for KZfaq) and use the 14mm for vlogging and 25mm for pictures (portraits especially) What I have found is that 1) I am not using the 12-60mm much, or even at all (plus it's heavy!) and 2) Its a bit of a hassle to keep swapping out my 14mm for the 25mm when I want to take really nice close up shots/portrait pictures. 6:40 Pretty much made up my mind re vlogging (to get the 15mm) In your experience with it, do you reckon I can get rid of my 25mm + 12-60mm for the 15mm? Giving me a wide field of view + better low light (and not forget the dreamy background blur!) and keep the Pancake to use for secondary footage? I am almost decided in getting the 15mm but would love your thoughts!

I have a new video coming up about the 15mm (it's in editing). I don't think it's worth selling lenses that can do other things. The 15mm isn't weather sealed which is where the 12-60 is handy. The 15mm is a killer lens and paired with any MFT camera it'll be a huge upgrade over the kit lens visually.

which one would be better to do streaming from the room(camera close), podcasting, food and product stills? I've got a Lumix GH5M2 with a 12-60mm f2.8-40 Leica lens with K&N filters kit for 62mm thread and I found that 12mm f1.2 has same front cap thread of 62mm so as amatour and passionate learner in both stills and videos I'm thinking that despite the fact of the price, weight and size of 12mm lens that one would be amazing tool for any production and learning lens right? Thanks for the video review about the SIRUI cine lens. Cheers

@GeekyNerdyTechy
@GeekyNerdyTechy Жыл бұрын
It depends on what sort of focal range you like best. The 15mm will definitely do scenery shots and if you get up close for family photos you'll get a better image than the kit lens. If you have the kit lens, try it at all of these focal ranges and see which one you find the most valuable. The 25mm is one of my favorites because it's cheap, and the image quality is awesome but it's quote "close" to the subject compared with the other two. The kit lens should give you a good idea of what range each of these are situated at.
@edmundw4577
@edmundw4577 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the great insight. I will definitely try the different ranges from the kit lens. My goal is trying to get a bit better photo quality lens and can carry around without constant changes of the lens. Most of my photos will be scenery and/or family photos.

Hello! I have a question regarding the panasonic leica 25mm f.14 lens. I have just bought the version 2 of it and experiencing this weird and strange grinding autofocus noise when the camera tends to hunt for focus. It I set it to AFS or let the camera do the autofocus by itself it does not make this noise. But if I set it to AFF or AFC and when I keep the shutter halfway pressed in order for it to aquire focus and if it hunts it makes a noise like it is grinding 2 pieces of metal. I am curious if someone else has this issue or it is normal behaviour of this lens. Thanks!
