It really sucks that 3D Arena Fighters don't get any respect and are looked upon as lazy cash grabs. My theory is because there are more bad 3D Arena Fighters than there are good ones, as well as the bad ones make alot more money then they're competent counterparts therefore incentivizing these companies to barely try still make the same garbage for example Jump Force and the one punch Man game are bad 3D Arena Fighters that come off the top of my head, Meanwhile the well made ones only recent gotten good, games like Ninja Storm 4, ones Justice 2, Kill la Kill if, and hopefully the new Demon Slayer game are good examples of developers actually trying and not trying to cash in on a popular franchise.

Unfortunately they're just too basic to be respected. They either actively discourage long comboes or changing up what you're doing, like Demon Slayer, or the possibility for creative gameplay is non-existent due to the game's simplicity, like Naruto Storm or One's Justice. In fact Jump Force I'd say has the biggest focus on an actual deep combat system of any arena fighter I've played, and even that falls into the biggest issue with most arena fighters: style > substance. Taking ridiculous amounts of time for basic attacks, having slow but bombastic movements, supers taking up to 30 seconds of time for sometimes no damage...

They're built too simply. Like, if you look at combo list and it's just "x, x, x, x, tilt, up x, x" that turns a lot of people into more traditional styled games off. Sure, they have room for complexity, but it's nigh impossible for people outside that specific scene to really see it. Kill la Kill if was the only one I saw get any appeal in the wider FGC (and having played it I can see why) but it was also built almost entirely for the casual audience with things like being forced into story mode to unlock certain features.

Most are balanced lore-wise, most have dumb combos and reward you for mashing, your spacing doesn't mean anything, you get meter by standing still and screaming to the sky, they are slow and pretty much party games with little to no execution not depth. So yea, don't expect them to get much respect as competitive fighters. Some are actually just dumb fun and enjoyable as games tho

1:20 Traditional footsies based fighters | You'll like this if you are over 30 2:37 3D fighters | If you play these you probably have a PhD 3:55 Airdasher fighters (Anime fighters) | Games where none cares about the over convoluted lore. 6:23 Versus Fighters | My favorite genre personally, If Footsie based Fighters are like a respectful martial arts duel, Versus Fighters are the dirty street brawls where anything goes. We pride ourselves on skipping neutral as much as possible and employing only the most degenerate of strategies to gain the edge. It's the closest you are gonna get to an action game/fighting game hybrid. 8:43 Platform Fighters | The only fighting game genre people are not sure is a fighting game or not xD 10:07 Lethal League | Honestly it's a brand new concept and unknown territory, could have potential but we'll see.

If there's one thing I learned through buying and playing all sorts of fighting games over the last couple of years it's that I hate links. I loved Guilty Gear, Skullgirls and Killer Instinct while I bounced right off Street Fighter and King of Fighters. Anyway wouldn't stuff like Bushido Blade and Hellish Quart be a separate category?

This leaves me wondering where the later Touhou fighting games would go. Now, the first three, Immaterial and Missing Power, Scarlet Weather Rhapsody and Hisoutensoku, would more easily fall somewhere between 2D and anime fighters (I'm probably not well-enough versed in fighting games to be able to fully make a judgment on where in that range, but would guess the latter due to the existence of an air dash?) - though they can be quite a bit more projectile-focused, what with characters having buttons for "melee" "light shot" and "heavy shot" instead of the usual assortment of melee attacks that usually only produce projectiles with special commands. Hopeless Masquerade, Urban Legend in Limbo, and Antinomy of Common Flowers are fairly similar in many ways too, but have this added element of being fully _aerial_ fighters. There is no ground, there is no crouching, there's just flight, essentially jumping above _or below_ the default height. I guess part of it also overlaps with platform fighters, with the extra emphasis on positioning and less complex inputs for moves. Wonder if "aerial fighter" could constitute its own subgenre, or if this is too close to those aforementioned ones?

Hack n slash and beatemups are different genres than fighting games and wrestling games are sports games and share more with something like fifa or madden than fighting games

And whats worse is the movie and its watchers thinks they're better or more "high-brow" than they're happy ending counterparts because nowadays sadder=better. Like hell can I not just watch a movie about two people falling in love anymore

Pokken is definitely my favorite Fighter, even if the 3D part of it comes more from arena fighters than its namesake it also handles that much better than all of the arena fighters I've played, it then transitions into a 2D phase which much more like traditional Fighters, taking a bit of inspiration from both Tekken and Street Fighter, making it well balanced with a good level of depth and accessibility.

Most 3d arena fighters aren't that good but I do think dismissing the entire thing isn't right well most are shit but my hero's one justice does seem to be kinda good at the very least and gundam vs is probably the best 3d arena anime fighter in existence i think those two elevate it enough to where the genre is like meeh but god damn was the naruto ultimate vs series bad

Fighting Games are really diverse and really have branched out in variety since the home consoles could match the arcade machines. Then there's weird hybrid fighters such as King Of Fighters with it's technical gameplay and in-depth jump arcs, Divekick where's there's quite literally two buttons and players die in one hit, Kill La Kill IF which is one of the few good Arena Fighters, Sonic The Fighters that's a 3D Fighter but plays like a 2D one with some interesting techniques involving walls, Sailor Moon S basically being (as a wise Core A Gaming once said) "Unregulated Waifu Cockfighting" and also made by Arc System Works funnily enough, Fatal Fury housing two different lanes to fight in, Wavejammers- . . .wait, is that even a fighting game? A sports game? Whatever, it's cool and something completely different just like Lethal League (tho sadly no music by the legend that is Hideki). Anyways fighting games are cool. There's something for everyone, from easy fighters like Fantasy Strike, Smash Ultimate & Dragon Ball Fighterz to more complex ones like Tekken, King Of Fighters & whatever a "Melee" is. You'll have fun so long as you find the right community and game & give them a chance.

I really love Skullgirls and UMVC3, the only problem i see in the second are the infinites... They are kind of... N O T F U N N Y. But hey, that's just my opinion

That's fair, I can see why infinites aren't fun for people but I think the benefits of those games are that you have more than 1 health bar so you can deal with TOD's. But I do get that being hit 3 times and losing isn't necessarily fun

If a game has infinites, then they should either be screwed over by damage scaling to the point where the only way to guarantee a win with one is via time out or they should be so exceedingly difficult to pull off that you basically need a TAS to do it consistently.

for those saying I should play Dark souls PVP, not a bad Idea, but it was built as a ARPG first, and a multiplayer arena battle game later; as such, you have to basically play the whole game before you can make a PVP viable build at meta level. Maybe I should try For Honor, but I was expecting something a little more 1 on 1, rather than a battleground; there are a lot of dishonest, random elements in games like that

Just getting started with fighting games on a more serious level. Also bought a fighting stick this week. So this video is very handy to get some basic info about fighting games. Anyone know where i could go to meet people in my region who also play fighting games? To get into the community...

Hey, glad to hear you're getting into fighting games! Finding your scene is dependant on the game that you're playing, if you're looking for local tournaments you can simply go to your preferred search engine, type your game and the city/town you live in and hopefully you'll get some groups who play that game locally. If you can't find any or they don't play your game then you can look for online discords that will host tournaments and have people to play with in then. Hope this helped :)

I wouldn't call "anime" a subgenre cause eventually one comes along and plays nothing like the rest. "Airdashers" which they almost always have makes more sense

Huh, I always thought versus fighters were 3v3 while 2v2 games were tag fighters. Or are tag fighters just versus fighters without assists like some of the KoF games? I also always called versus fighters "team" fighters... Is that just me?

Tag games are just games where you can literally tag in and out your characters on the fly. Marvel vs Capcom, DBFZ, BBTAG, Power Rangers, KOF 2003 & 11, SFxT, Tekken Tag, etc. Versus fighters are just anime games in denial. Nah, the term generally refers to the X vs Capcom games: Marvel vs Capcom, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, etc. They have lots of mobility options, long combos, brutal mixups, tag mechanics, and assists. But really the main difference between a Versus Fighter and an Anime Tag-team Fighter is just the subject material. DBFZ would be a tag fighter and an anime fighter that also shares a lot in common with the Versus games, but is its own unique take on that formula. Capcom vs SNK would NOT be a versus fighter or a tag fighter because it lacks the mobility options, tag mechanics, and assists. A team game or fighter is just a game where you pick a team, rather than a single character. All versus games and tag games are inherently team games, but there are also team games that are neither of those things. Most of the KOF games would fall under that category, as well as the previously mentioned CvS games.

Can you classify Lethal League as a projectile fighter? I mean, you’re fighting with a projectile, but it’s also not technically part of a characters kit. And then, could arms be classified under this too? You have big ass arms which are like projectiles, but they also aren’t. Is projectile fighter even a sub genre?

Just curious what subgenre is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle? Would it be classified as "garbage"? Haha. I don't think it's a standard anime fighter, it lacks airdashes and isn't completely 2d. I'd say it's kinda unique but... as much as I like it for the franchise... it kinda sucks as a fighter. I still have a hard time figuring out what genre it'd go into though.

Honestly I just looked up this game and ive never seen it before so I'm not the best person to ask, I'd probably say anime as it looks like it has a bunch of weird features that no other fighting game really has plus the aesthetic but honestly without playing it I can't give you a perfect answer, sorry about that

A huge problem with this video is that it put anime fighters as a separate genre combining your shonen brand arena fighters and the 2D ones like under night All Star Battle is an arena fighter, utilizing a 3D plane like Tekken But yeah it's garbage as most anime arena fighters are

No mention of KOF was criminal. I feel like mentioning the biggest series would be more informational to people less knowledgable. "Oh so this the Guilty Gear/Tekken/KOF/Smash type of game, cool!" About Smash, that last segment might have gone over someone's head. Plus you won't be able to boycott nintendo ever, might as well support the community by not pretending it doesn't exist lol. Otherwise great video.

all aspects of gameplay that were placed as aspects of anime fighters exist in other older 2D games( Kof and Mvc2 for example). I still don't understand what defines the "AnimeFighters" subgenre, as it doesn't make sense to me because there doesn't seem to be any aspect that brings changes in gameplay that are unique to the so-called "anime fighters" . Fighting games are divided into 2 types which are 2D/2.5D and 3D, what we see after that are the sub-genres which are platform fighters that borrow aspects from platform games, arena fighters which would be a sub-genre of 3D fighters and tag fighters that may be a sub-genre because it brings changes in mechanics by switching characters mid-fight or calling in assists. Now tell me: WHICH ASPECTS OF THE GAME THAT UNIQUELY DEFINE AN ANIME FIGHTER?!?!?!?!? Just aesthetics? Being from ArcSysWorks? Just kidding hehehe. I really don't know and wanted answers.

footsies belongs in a weird subgenre that doesn't really fall under conventional systems: ONE-SHOT FIGHTING GAMES these are fighting games which are focused on looking for your opponent's mistakes in their defenses, and capitalizing on those mistakes. you're rewarded for this with a won round most often(? i don't know the sub-genre too well) there will be only 1 character everyone plays, or characters with very little variety unless the game's systems allows for variation in character design there are only 2 games that i know of that take this concept, being footsies (obviously) and divekick

@@neon-lake Yes I can understand that, because in soulcaliber and tekken, we can move in 3d space but the camera is still 2d. I mean Why people don't even consider Urban reign as a fighting game? Its very underrated. Urban reign lacks nothing if you ask me. And Urban Reign is completely 3d game with tpp behind the back view.
