First try on wood, laser copy transfer, sanding, masking, layers FUN! Sorry about image quality on this one, issues with auto focus and lighting! Thought I'd post it anyway!

As always, love your relaxed style and Pop Art images. I have been transferring images on plywood for some time using Mod Podge but think my new found interest in Gel Plate printing combined with your generous informative techniques on plywood will allow for larger scale 50' 60's atomic retro style prints to emerge. Thanks again Mark, much appreciated, Grahame

I just recently discovered your channel. I started doing gelli printing last year, & have watched lots of KZfaq videos & have been kind of obsessed with the art form & its possibilities since I accidentally came upon it while searching KZfaq for something entirely different! I have got to say, I am totally fascinated by what you do. I don't think anyone else is taking gelli printing to the level that you are. It takes a lot for me to wrap my mind around the thinking process required for your work, but I love the results & hope I can bring some of your techniques into my work!

Really gorgeous result. Once again enjoying your assembled mark-making from the various tools. You combine them with a such a sure hand and a great eye. Nothing looks patchy, somehow. It all fits and works together seamlessly. I'm envious! One technical note about paint going directly onto wood: What I've always been told is that, if you don't seal the wood first, the dry surface can leach the binder out of the paint, leaving the pigment weakly adhered. Over time, it can flake or dust off. Some kind of clear sealer, as a first coat, is strongly recommended.
@yeatesmakes

Great point on priming wood, absent mind!!!!
@petalpusher
@petalpusher 2 жыл бұрын
@xenopticon @yeates makes - Totally agree! Sealing & priming wood substrates is important for many reasons: (1) helps the next medium properly adhere to substrate, (2) helps prevent moisture absorption/release that can warp/degrade wood over time, and (3) helps prevent wood acids/tannins/etc. from discoloring & degrading the paint, paper, and other artistic elements. Some artists buy Ampersand artist panels. Others cut, support, seal, and prime their own to exacting standards. To support my own “experimental art technique” inclination, I buy a large sheet of semi-rigid wood at a local hardware store, have it cut into 20-40 panels, and then prep them all over a weekend: a coat of hardware store sealer on one side only, a coat of clear/white/tinted artist acrylic gesso (AKA primer), and optional sanding and/or more gesso coats depending on desired surface (rough grain vs. smooth; natural wood appearance vs. opaque background). This approach shouldn’t be used for artwork that will be sold or is intended to stand the test of time, but it’s an economical way to stock up on material that's easier for me to use & reuse more freely. Thank you for this unique & inspiring channel. Your aesthetic, techniques, and art pieces are amazing!

Would be a fantastic record sleeve ! Love it. Leaving the transfer to dry overnight seems to me also an advantage of working on wood or canvas board . Thinking that paper would not survive it when you peel it off after such a long drying time (?)
@AngelBomb5000
@AngelBomb5000 2 жыл бұрын
Paper does peel off after a long dry time quite well. The problem I ran into was my cheap thin copy paper buckled in a wavy pattern from the wet paint and physically impressed that pattern into my gel plate! It took a bit of conditioning with mineral oil and time to release that texture so I could get clean prints again.
@yeatesmakes

@@yeatesmakes Thanks for that tip. Sounds better than the one I currently do. I have printed the same page twice to build up the toner on it but the image can get slightly misaligned when I put the paper back in the paper tray for the 2nd print 😀 I have found changing my image into a halftone image works well. Also it's fun to set to the bigger cell size sometimes to see the dots more prominently in the print.

What I mean is that you have something important to teach. It’s meaningful. I’m referring to the fact that you fill a void I didn’t realize was there. People like me who love experimenting but have traditional art backgrounds turn up their noses at a lot of this. I like that your approach is democratic and ‘real’ art, I hope you don’t talk yourself out of it. If I could figure it out I’d do my own channel too. Well done all around.

Hi Carole, such a lovely comment, thank you. I've made a few videos from my own photos / drawings. i guess you'd have to trawl back through the library, but off the top of my head, you could look at the masking tape collagraph of a door, phototransfer of a derelict house, drawings of seed heads, pen emboss, variois masking tape relief print vids... there will be more, I'm sure. Your comment has given me a great idea though, to do a video focusing on using your own photos in more depth, choosing subject matter and a few editing options. Thanks again : )

Really nice work indeed... I don't understand when the gel medium is supposed to be used. I may have missed the information on that, but is it when ink is involved instead of paint?
@yeatesmakes
@yeatesmakes 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert. I should be clearer!!! The gel medium is nothing to do with ink - I'm only using acrylic paint here. I use gel medium to transfer an image when working onto a background that is already dry / prepared. In this case, I transferred the image of Django but wanted to keep some of the background peeping through the image. The transparency of the gel medium allows this. : )

Do you have any recommendations for a brand of gel medium? I’ve tried pulling up transfers with liquitex matte medium and it seems to rehydrate everything on the plate and it just becomes a mess while rolling even if I let the transfer dry first. I’m guessing each brand has a different formula and some work better than others.

Hi Yeates, this is wonderful and looks like so much fun. I’m just wondering about your image, is it a drawing of yours? I’m always hesitant to use pictures from magasines and such. Do we need permissions or something? Thanks.
@yeatesmakes
@yeatesmakes 2 жыл бұрын
This one I made using a scan from a photo in a music mag. I then edited it fairly heavily in a drawing app (increasing contrast, removing background etc) to make it more gel plate friendly. I think when you use found images and edit them loads you're not going to run into any trouble. Usually I work from my own photos or drawings, in part because of copywright but also just becuase its more rewarding
