Thank you so much for making these videos. I feel like I've discovered a master class on creating fine art with a Gelli plate. I appreciate getting a peek into how are you get the inspiration for your projects, and how drawing is so important in your work.

You are amazing! What a wonderful technique. I love so much how you have taken what seemed like such a “crafty” tool and made it into an art tool. As much as I appreciated the Gelli plate’s many uses for crafts, I really value how you have elevated it.

I am learning so much from you- the humble gelli plate, wow i sure never figured there were so many ways to create with it Thank you for these great tutorials. I watched an artist use the gelli plate as an actual drawing board. She places her picture underneath the plate and paints the image right on the plate, then takes subsequent image pulls on the same picture, painting the different parts of the picture and taking pulls after each. Masking tape makes register marks to align the picture, if this makes sense. Its also a fun way for kids to learn printmaking :) and big kids like me as well.

Hi Linda, this is a technique I've tried. To be honest, I find the surface of the plate a bit weird to paint on. I guess its all those years painting on paper and board and canvas! Your comment will make go back and persevere though!!

Hi. Love your videos. I do a lot of gel printing and always use a hairdryer on medium/cool to dry layers and on the back of the paper whilst firmly rubbing until the surface no longer feels cool to the touch. This way I can pull up to six layers of paint within a few minutes. Use this method when teaching and it has never damaged a plate. I only use purchased plates.

Thank you so much. Ive been binge watching your work. You are an amazing artist. Then well the gel plate techniques you work through is exactly why I bought my plates. I hadnt found the right person with the right technques but now I have. I live in Australia and I think the masking tape technique could work really well with our gum trees and some of our rocks and native flowers. I would like to second another comment... I was more interested in printing per se and was disappointed when all i found were like card making etc videos for the gel plates. I have experimented with plants as relief. But I wasnt sure if you could use other things like the tape. I had thought of paper stencils but wasnt sure if they would hold up. Thanks again

You can make paper stencils sturdier by adding a layer of liquid or even soft gel medium to the surface.

I have made stencils with heavy paper that I painted on one side with acrylic house paint. They are quite durable. Next time I make them I'll paint both sides (gloss or semi-gloss) because it makes it so easy to wipe the stencils clean. Paint the paper first and then cut the stencil with a craft knife.

Spectacular! Really appreciate seeing another of your working methods. Very informative and useful. I've finally broken down and gotten help dealing with my awful studio clutter, so that I can have space to work, again. I'm looking forward to trying this technique and the image transfers, first thing, once that's sufficiently progressed. One of the things I envy about British education is the way in which public-school (in the US; I believe you call this private school in GB) artists are taught a /development/ process--going from observation, through mark-making and exploration, through to a finished work. I missed out on all of that, growing up. This video is a great shorthand course in the evolution of a project. I also appreciate the adaptability of the approach you've demonstrated, here. The fact that the same technique can be so readily applied to working directly from a photograph, as well as to drawings developed from it, is really beneficial. Also, the reinforced versatility of the masking tape collagraph, being used as a printing matrix, or a rubbing plate. I'm also curious about how it would work as both an additive and a subtractive tool on the gel plate, either printing paint onto the plate, or lifting it off. I think it might produce excellent (and possibly surprising) results. Finally, I second the notion of your teaching workshops in person! At least, once that's safe again. It would be /excellent/ to have the benefit of your experience in trouble-shooting and developing images.
@yeatesmakes
@yeatesmakes 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, glad you're getting your studio sorted. I watched a Marie Kondo show a while back - looks simple when she's involved!!! Glad you've noticed the benefits of a maksing tape collagraph, can be used to press directly onto plate, to do a rubbing from or print directly from using relief printing inks. Three for one as it were. I can't speak for a UK private school as I've never been in one. State schools here are pretty good on observational work and experimentation, process etc. Thankfully things seem to be moving more toward experimentation and creativity rather than over leaning on copying an artists work to understand process. Copying has its place and there's a lot to learn, but finding your way and voice is just as important in my book. Not sure it is now, but i saw a documentary on Japanese art education which is totally grounded in hours of observation from real objects and subjects. A group of Japanese tourists were asked when visiting a castle in UK to ditch their cameras and take a sketchpad and pens / pencils - they all knocked it out of the park! amazing baseline skills! Cheers as ever for comments - yours always get me thinking!
@Xenopticon
@Xenopticon 2 жыл бұрын
@@yeatesmakes Yeah, it's state schools I was thinking were called "private" in UK. Here, they're called "public". And on that note, I should also point out that a good deal of my geographically-distant impression of the curricular approach has come from British books on fiber arts, which contain some of the best information I've encountered on the process of proceeding from observation to mark-making exploration to idea development to executing and amending the final work. However, those books may apply predominantly to higher and trade-specific education, and less to primary & secondary levels. Thanks for notes on Japanese arts education. I do like the idea of emphasizing observation, for sure, and I take your point (from other videos I've viewed, elsewhere) about deriving work from another artist's style vs. developing one's own voice. That said, I value the way you move so fluently between those approaches. Even when working in someone else's "visual vernacular"--for instance, as you did with the safety-pin piece, or others incorporating pop art components--your result always ends up looking exactly like /your/ art. Possibly not true for everyone, but so far as I have seen, definitely true for you. Glad to know my comments stimulate thought. Possibly that's because of the inspiring videos which stimulate the comments. Hopefully win-win.

@yeatesmakes
@yeatesmakes 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, glad to hear you'll give the collagraph a go. Good to know you can both print directly from it and take a rubbing to use with gel plate. If you build the tape on acrylic, you can press it onto an inked plate - I did a vid on that too, some seaweed. A fair few people have mentioned workshops so I am going to look into it! I hadn't anticipated opportunities like this to spring from starting the channel! Thanks for the encouragement Paul, much appreciated : )

Love your tutorials - I’m struggling with wax crayon rubbings, I simply can’t get them to work. I went to my telegraph pole to collect rubbings of numbers ( like you did). My crayon is a proper wax crayon not water soluble. Can you give me any tips as it didn’t work at all, I even tried hard heel wax used for brass rubbing and that failed to. Could it be the paper I’m rubbing on? The paper? The paint? I’m stuck?
@yeatesmakes

My only tip is make sure the layer of paint is very thin and don't hang around, if the paint dries out too much you won't get a clear transfer. and, of course, light light pressure : )
