Thank you for all of the information you share in your videos. You are so generous that I hate to bother you, but I really need the help. I am on my third stone and it is an oval. I found the design in; Cutting Gemstones A beginners guide to faceting. It is a Lazy oval that is not so lazy. My questions, why are ovals so much harder to cut? Also, where can I find information on cutting ovals specifically? The crown is not working. Thanks Sincerely.

You are welcome. The most common issue with cutting Ovals, Marquis, and Pear Shaped gemstones is not getting the length to width ration just right. This isn't a problem with Round, Square or Rectangle gemstones. If you don't get your length to width just right, your facets won't line up and your girdle will be a mess. The L/W ratio is found in the cutting instructions. As far as information on ovals....I have read articles from time to time in various gem cutting newsletters. Good luck!

How is better to start with pavilion or with the griddle to give the shape of the stone? Cheers

If you need the length/width to be a specific size, then sometimes it is best to cut/polish the girdle before working on the pavilion.

Sir, how did you give the oval shape to the stone in the begining? Did you start first from the girdle or from the pavillion? How did you manage to make all the girdle facets equal to each other mean same in width size?

First I cut the mains on the bottom half, the pavilion. They form a temporary center point on the pavilion. Then, when I cut the girdle, I made sure to hit the right length and width based on the L/W ratio.
