I'm sure this fellow is a great tinkerer and repairman, however, his direction and production skills are lacking. I suspect if you came to this video you were (as I was) trying to find a solution to repair the animated Dean Martin or Bing Crosby. They KEY to fixing this thing is TAKE YOUR TIME and BE GENTLE, have enough work space and light, and have necessary tools to do this. You will need a hook set, small needle-nose pliers, mini-screwdrivers (blade and Phillips) and a small bottle of fast-setting superglue - I suggest a small bottle with a precision applicator tip. Lastly, if you own a Dremel tool (or similar), get a smallest diameter sandpaper grinding tool. I will give you a bit of my own 2¢ and insight into repairs of the mouth mechanism (the most common repair): 1. You do NOT have a break the mouth off the doll. If you ever so carefully and gently wiggle and pull slowly you will eventually pull the mouth off without damage. 2. The staples in the neck do not require a soldering iron to remove. If you have a set of small o-ring hooks, you can gently pry them out. Again, once you get hooked under the staple, gently and steadily wiggle and pull them out. 3. Once you get to the point where you are going to remove the head, again take your time and look into the opening in the neck. You will have to turn it 90° and gently wiggle it over the motor and the gear assembly on the other side of the motor (part of the mouth animatronic). Set the head aside. 4. The problems I found were both a mechanical problem and an engineering/design problem: • On my unit, the mouth did not move. After removing the head I found that the mechanical that moves the mouth is a spring-loaded slide that is run by a small DC motor, which pulls a string that moves the slide assembly down (open mouth) and, when the motor stops, the spring retracts the slide assembly (close mouth). In my case, the string had become separated from the plastic gear which is attached to the armature of the DC motor. It is plastic and had cracked, and eventually split into two pieces while I examined it. I used the glued it back together with the super glue. Once it set (2-minutes), I slid it back onto the armature and then pulled the string taught and super-glued that to the armature. Again, let is set for about 2-minutes. • Once all this was complete, I noted that the mouth animatronic mechanism worked, however, it has some seriously (cheesy) engineering problems that I had to overcome to achieve an optimum result. First, I adjusted the spring mechanism to make sure I had just the right taught-ness between the spring and the string. It's a fiddly trial and error, but you need to get this just right. I also suggest applying some kind of lubricant on the slide mechanism, however, make sure you do NOT use a petroleum-based lubricant as it will degrade the plastic and ruin it in time. A silicone lube may work best. Second, I reassembled the whole assembly. Then checked the function of the slide assembly through the mouth hole without the mouth/jaw installed to insure it was sliding fully down and retracting-up. This was working fine but once I reinstalled the mouth I found that there was two engineering issues: A. The mouth rubs against the mouth opening in the head which has a tendency to get the mouth stuck, nad; B. The mouth itself is TOO HEAVY to allow the mouth to function well. This is where the Dremel became useful. I had to both grind away at the edges of the mouth to make it not rub against the head, both to grind the edges back a bit, and thin the outer sides to they didn't rub against the head's mouth opening. This achieved much free-er operation of the mouth, but it didn't retract as quick needed to give a full range of motion when the mouth is operated. It's just too heavy. So overcome this problem, I used a sand grinding wheel with a very small diameter to literally grind material out of the inside of the mouth/chin. BE CAREFUL so as NOT to grind a hole through the mouth/chin. I am pretty sure I removed several grams of plastic material which ended-up considerably reducing the total weight of the mouth assembly. After all of this (I spent maybe 90-minutes working with this) I ended-up with a flawlessly functioning mouth assembly, with full range from close to open to close. I let it run for an hour and checked back and found it the mouth to still be functioning optimally. I know you're probably asking why I didn't make a video, well, it was trial and error, and I didn't know what I was going to be doing or where it would take me. I hope my text instructions will give you some direction to repair your animatronic mouth and achieve an optimal animatronic effect.

Head does not turn, not work, lip does not move up and down song does not play. Probably an easy fix to someone who knows how to do it. Please get back to me. Thank you. AP
