I just replaced my inverter pump on my 2008 Toyota Prius with about 154,000 miles. I went through the bumper cover & headlight method. Pretty easy and much less than $750 my dealership wanted including flushing and replenishing the coolant! In my opinion, it made sense to completely drain and replenish the coolant at the same time. Love my Prius, KZfaq and Amazon make driving and owning my Prius even more affordable!

I did end up going to dang dealership...for peace of mind really. It sis not end that way but I'll trust intuition NOW . 2 hours/$200 was "getting the hard to keep engine running to feed in new coolant" what cost $500 could have....with NO more peace of mind and very little discussion welcome when I had a mechanic paid megga$ there to talk to. Grrr. Credit card bill will surely keep this haunt going. Learn about your Prius from the great people on Your offering videos 'How To' 👊

Jack up the car put it on stands and do the hoses from the bottom. Once you remove the shield from top and bottom remove the two screws you can get it done.

Great job. Good camera skills. You don't waste time talking about pointless things and everything is hands on. No blurring shots. I admire the fact that you work with what you have. Example hammer for a lift and needle nose pliers to take clams off. That's exactly what I'll have to go through. Thank you for the video.

May I add that the invertor water pump, that is next to that module you replaced, protects the $4,000 invertor. The invertor water pump fails every 3-5 years. It costs $70. Just buy one & keep it in the trunk. If you don't see " turbulence " in the invertor circuit coolant reservoir, STOP. Tow it to mechanic or your home. It is diy type replacement. Peace.

I have used wine corks to plug the 3 hoses! Lol. Same for when I changed the invertor water pump. Worked well, probably best to stick with the dense rubbery kind not the kind with crumbly cork material, don't want little bits falling into the hoses obviously. As you disconnect each hose place your thumb over the opening, reach into your pocket for the wine cork and plug it (thin corks fit as plugs, not thick ones). Simple remedy. Some of you manly beer drinkers need to drink more wine, ha.

Thanks. For REAL. Toyota Dealership quoted me $110 diagnostic (comes off final labor charge) & their hourly price guide for this was "maybe under $500" This part new at Autozone is $75. I hate having to work on my own car but always have. At 50-I hoped to never have to again. Thanks to your video I can see I can do this. Friggin-A. ✌

I went to Auto Zone after the signal light went on and they checked it and the code said the coolant control valve in our 2008 Prius was broken. I ordered one online. I was able to drive for a few days with no problems overheating. To begin with, I used car ramps on the front and one of those flat scooters to get under the car, chocking the car at the back with rubber blocks. No problem with the top bolt or bolts, but on advice of a local Toyota mechanic I used a smaller 1/4 ratchet with a 10 mm socket to get the bottom bolt off the bracket that holds the part to the car. It was stuck and I was afraid I would ruin it. I finally got the control valve out from the top of the engine. It was a tight squeeze. To get it out, I shimmed in a wood block to hold the inverter up after I took the two front brace bolts off the inverter. Sorry but I don't think I really needed the special hose clamps to save the coolant fluid from dripping out. After a struggle, I ended up just letting the coolant drip out into a container. I don't think you will lose more than a gallon, anyway. The real problem was getting the crummy original hose clamps off. Toyota should have just put regular ordinary screw hose clamps on these. You need to get some long-handled, long nose pliers, cheap at Harbor Freight to help with the dratted original Toyota hose clamps which took me several hours of work and a trip for longer tools and a decent ratchet to Sears and Harbor Freight. I used the long nose pliers, one that came in a set at Harbor Freight with a bent end for hose clamps I guess, and a couple of vice grips, one of them small, along the way. I am not as good as this video guy, for sure. I am wet and dirty but just put the new part in. I did buy the special clamps for the hoses to avoid losing fluid but it was a waste of money and I think the best thing to do is what this guy does. These clamps got in the way. I learned that I could actually let the coolant leak out and save it and pour it through a filter back into a container and put it back into the car later. I used a coffee filter to funnel the spilled coolant into a container. I then poured it into the radiator slowly through a funnel and allowed the bubbles to come out of the system -- I ran the car in park and it took a couple of hours for all the bubbles to come out as I watched the open radiator. I had bought a gallon of pink Asian coolant at the auto store which they told me was the same as Toyota brand and I haven't had any trouble with it for the past few months.

I've been putting off this repair on our 220k mile 2006 because most videos made it look like a royal pain in the ass with draining, bleeding and filling everything while having to jumper the hybrid coolant pump. This is a way more straight forward approach and I'll be tackling this after the clock spring.
@RogerPack
@RogerPack Жыл бұрын
The trick with this one is that unless you clamp pinch off all the hoses first, once you take one off all your coolant is going to flow out of the valve itself (it comes in from underneath). So either accept it or pinch them all off. You need big hose pinchers, I think harbor freight has some but the little C shaped ones I got from autozone weren't enough, O'reilly's didn't seem to sell any either. Taking out the headlight is a huge help...got one at salve for like $20
@dennisfahey2379
@dennisfahey2379 2 жыл бұрын
I couldn't get leverage on the clamps or pulling the hoses with this method. Just way too little room. I ended up pulling the front bumper and right headlamp assembly. Note this is the same trick for replacing the inverter pump assembly. Its only a few screws and pops. Once you clear that out of the way you have far more room and can get the hoses and hose clamps off. I drained the system and replaced the coolant. Burped the system at the upper valve below the top metal (#6 hex wrench) while refilling. Works like a champ. Error codes gone.

For those who have tried it, how well did it hold up over time? This is the first video that didn't go completely over the top about purging and the effects of air in the system. Since the presence of this valve already Indicates that Toyota took a completely simple concept and jacked it up, I've been worried that the air bubble issue is legit

I'm also unsure how big of an issue it might present , so personally, I'm just gonna try to do the job myself, and then get a repair shop to flush the coolant system for me so that I know it's good to go. Only have to pay $100 for the flush instead of the estimated $830 for the entire replacement of this part.

Thanks for posting! For an ‘easy’ job, this turned out to be a B!TCH for me! That 10mm bolt on the fender apron rounded on me! I came close to taking out a sawzall. The key was borrowing a super-short handle vise grips. Also, if you have big hands, don’t even try this job. Lastly, what u need are plugs for the hose ends - not clamps.

Here's my fix in Mn. at -10-15* F : remove CCV; clean ; remove gear cover; remove worm gear and plastic drive; manually turn valve so ports all align(small hole on 3-way valve goes down into hose that goes to hot coolant resevoir and the others will be full port FROM engine and TO heater pump). Crazy glue gear into place so ball cannot move; replace cover and reinstall; use big black funnel to refill what was lost while running in maintenance mode; (jack up front passenger wheell off ground to help expel air): lower jack and drive. It works good, never dealin' with that 3-way CCV again-DONE. Oh, the only light you get will obviously be a p1121 CCV but otherwise it's fine.

fyi when I had no heat there were no codes on the dash. However, an expensive scanner will pull up all sorts of codes....Faults with the HVAC system. Faults with the trans. There is a list of about 15 systems that the "expensive scanner" scans for. Long story short the good scanner pulled the P1121 code for me even though it was not on dash when my CCV went bad.

So I saw another video where the coolant leaked out so they had to "burp" the system to make sure there was no air in the system. Something to keep in mind.

yeah, i had that issue. after i filled the coolant again, i didn’t bleed out the air from the system so my car was over heating.

No, this is a normal sound on Prius vehicles. It’s one of the many electric coolant pumps working.

@@zachmiller289 on mine, that rumble was the ABS actuator pump failing, once i paid the dealer 2800$ to fix it, i nolonger hear it. google search the ABS pump, you will find its a common fail issue, and toyota even extended the warranty on it, unfortunately mine started failing after that extention. the problem with the ABS pump is internal seals fail and it has to keep turing on to repressureize the internal section as the pressure slowly drops.

The first thing is you need to do is check your codes. Once you do that you can better see what your up against.

That's the inverter coolant pump. Not to hard to change. If it stops working your inverter could over heat and burn out. I would suggest replacing it right away.

You most likely have air in the system. There is a way you can force the water pump manually to run out the air. It requires pulling a relay and shorting a couple wires. I might do a video on this eventually. Pretty sure you can find one on youtube though. Goodluck!

Update. I didn't have air in the system. The water pump failed also. It may have been the problem in the beginning but I only had a check engine code for the control valve. A day later the check engine light came on for the pump.
