Parliament has welcomed an influx of Generation Z MPs following Labour's landslide election victory, with seven of the eight youngsters being from Keir Starmer's party.
Labour MP for North West Cambridgeshire Sam Carling has become the youngest sitting MP, known as the baby of the house, at just 22 years old.
Labour MPs Joshua Dean and Euan Stainbank are also just 24 years old.

I believe the age requirement is 18, but I don't think it was set in stone until quite recently. For the longest time, it was just a general rule of thumb, and certainly by the start of the 19th century. The UK would be hypocrites, and be disregarding a lot of history, they raised the age for how old an MP or Prime Minister should be. Take William Pitt, the Younger. He was 24 when he took on the role of Prime Minister and was a phenomenal one at that. So good in fact at being Prime Minister, it basically killed him. James Dickinson in 1880, was also elected to MP at the mere age of 21. And less we forget the reigning monarch at the time, Queen Victoria, ascended to the throne at age 18. Any younger, she would've required a regency. I'd say it has more so to do with intelligence, mental acuity, and sound of mind. Since sometimes, having a person in their 80s, whose been in government for decades can be an invaluable asset for perspective. While someone whose 20, can counteract that perspective, with a fresh and current perspective.

Apart from the fact that there are a bunch of youngsters, I’m honestly more impressed and excited by the fact that they are first given a choice to “swear or affirm”. Yet another thing the USA could take note of- British politicians are not required to have any religious beliefs nor swear on a holy book if they don’t want to. They don’t need to fake a faith to attract votes. And, if they do want t swear to their god they get to choose WHICH book and which god , without it being a big deal.

I would say they are both silly, but one far more damaging in that people across the globe seem set on duping themselves into the threat of burning for eternity if they are nice to gay people, and the monarchy just…. costs a lot or ordinary people money for some people to be symbolic figureheads. This one knows his place. Good job kid. In all seriousness though, I don't see how someone with such little real world experience and Gen-Z's pragmatic and dubious sense of morality can be trusted to make decisions which will shape the lives of not only his generation, but mine, my parents' and my grandparents generation for years to come. Not to mention, his gaunt, stick-figure like build is a solid indication of him having not done a single day's worth of manual labour in his entire life, or having even spent time socialising with anyone outside his spoiled, pompous bubble of inbred weasel people, so "king" Phillip probably likes him. As a just-turned-30, white working class guy, I'd say my life is about to get a lot harder when all the 19 year old Muhammeds, Sanjays and Sergeis start to swarm Britain and the government sends them exclusively to working class areas.

This is what I hate about our system, most MPs you don’t know who they are what they believe in at the end of the day the party just pick someone in the area to be their guy or girl and that’s that, no offence but what does a 22 year old have to offer, they have experienced nothing. Being 22k and living the life of 100k salary and unlimited expenses isn’t the kind of experience we need running the country.

Yet if you only choose older people as your representatives, you're not representing the entirety of the population. Younger voters will, in general, be more aligned with the thoughts of younger MPs, and they get to vote and be represented just as well as older voters. Variety is always good in representation.
@PhotonLemonade
@PhotonLemonade Ай бұрын
You can't win with some people. Young MP's are inexperienced, old MP's are out of touch and unrepresentative, and everyone is making instant assumptions about them doing nothing and getting paid despite the fact they haven't even started yet. Just relax and make judgement when you actually have information to judge.

I don't think enough people understand that this has nothing to do with age. MPs are voted in by the people of their constituency. It is a democracy.
