Gene editing can now change an entire species -- forever | Jennifer Kahn

Күн бұрын

CRISPR gene drives allow scientists to change sequences of DNA and guarantee that the resulting edited genetic trait is inherited by future generations, opening up the possibility of altering entire species forever. More than anything, this technology has led to questions: How will this new power affect humanity? What are we going to use it to change? Are we gods now? Join journalist Jennifer Kahn as she ponders these questions and shares a potentially powerful application of gene drives: the development of disease-resistant mosquitoes that could knock out malaria and Zika.

@danielmoore4024
@danielmoore4024 Жыл бұрын
@@frankiepezzolla What is defined as a disease is my concern, can you recall homosexuality defined as a pathological disorder? Hitler and racial hygiene? Why were alternative races defined as diseases? Humans clearly cannot be trusted, they will no doubt abuse people with it with selfish motives. I am autistic and I don't want to be cured of the gifts that come with it, they should not have the right to change people without our consent, it is racism and discrimination. Molecular biologist Miroslav Radman writes, "Mutagenesis has traditionally been viewed as an unavoidable consequence of imperfections in the process of DNA replication and repair. But if diversity is essential to survival, and if mutagenesis is required to generate such diversity, perhaps mutagenesis has been positively selected for throughout evolution." Evelyn Fox Keller explains: "We now know that mechanisms for enduring genetic stability are a product of evolution. Yet a surprising number of mutations in which at least some of these mechanisms are disabled have been found in bacteria living under natural conditions. Why do these mutants persist? Is it possible that they provide some selective advantage to the population as a whole? Might the persistence of some mutator genes in a population enhance the adaptability of that population? Apparently so. New mathematical models of bacterial populations in variable environments confirm that, under such conditions, selection favors the fixation of some mutator alleles and furthermore, that their presence accelerates the pace of evolution." The mutants behind autism offer some great advantages to the human race, diminishing the genes is a great risk because without those mechanisms there is no asurety of genetic stability pushing us in the direction of extinction. Psychologist Howard Gardner warns: "With the coming of age of genetics, the danger magnifies. Beyond doubt we will discover genes that are important for reading alphabetical scripts; and there is already evidence that a small set of genes may be related to reading problems. As with the brain evidence, such information can be helpful for early intervention; but it could easily be used for stigmatising purposes. Indeed, it might become relevant for marriage prospects, holding a job, securing insurance, or even eugenic purposes. And no doubt, especially in our interventionist society, individuals with a genetic predisposition for reading problems will look into different kinds of genetic engineering or therapy. It is possible that such interventions will work and have no negative side effects, but it is perhaps more likely that they will have unanticipated effects. And we might even want to consider which valued human abilities - eg. spatial or pattern recognition skills - might be placed at risk were we to target our interventions specifically at reading disorders." We can see the vast majority of so called diseases for what they are; they are discriminatory social constructions, not an intention to objectively understand human biology. Were global warming, warmer oceans, production of epidemic diseases, climate change, increased natural hazards and more anticipated. I doubt it so I would say Howard Gardner has a good point, every time humans have tried to play God and control nature nature struck humans back with greater problems, the people trying to solve the problems are the people who caused the problems and are trying to solve those problems repeating the same mistake to cause more problems.

Some of the things said on this talk are insanely naiive. First you say it's easy for any lab, an undergraduate could do it. Then you talk about regulation... "Maybe Kenya wants to release a gene drive, but Tanzania doesn't". How about "What if someone just decides to make and release one without politely informing the rest of the world?" This is a far more likely scenario by several orders of magnitude, and given the size and diversity of the educated human population it's pretty much a given that it will happen.

The tensions of nuclear programs, and the increasing pressure from the international community to denuclearize will hopefully lead to a safer planet. Nuclear weapons used by military power will ultimately lead to destruction of human lives, and ecological systems. I would like to see nuclear fusion take it's place, that would truly end many conflicts, and promote sustainable peace.

+Ammar Faraz Not saying humans arent dicks but like she said. The resources that would be needed to do something like this wouldn't be at reach of everyone. I mean, besides a super group that wants to whipe the entire human race (not even Isis wants this) I dont see how it can become a major problem. It seems much more logic to me that if something was going to turn out bad it would be by mistake. Having companies investing in order to find a profitanble business and turning out bad seems much more concerning.
@Ammar34567
@Ammar34567 8 жыл бұрын
560vasco The Money-Making Mindset is the problem. That's the "Humans are dicks" part. Capitalism is only one way that allows them to gather enough resources for it. People making money isn't bad, it's how the world runs. It's how much they exploit the legal system that's bad, which just sums up to "humans are dicks"
@560vasco
@560vasco 8 жыл бұрын
+Ammar Faraz I agree with you, but this is not an issue in North Korea, not saying it would be better, there would be other problems. But my point is that Capitalism lets that greed for money flow as much as it wants, not having any control over it. Not saying Capitalism is bad all bad, but it does need some tweeks so it can control our most animalistic thoughts.

The easiest way to deal with invasive species is not to think in terms of eliminating them, but making them more palatable to the local fauna. The problem with things like Asian carp and Cane toads is they have no natural predators. What's nice about this approach is that they can survive in their native habitat as well even if the whole species is changed.

Human overpopulation is a real problem for other species and the environment, but the flaw in your theory is that "advanced" civilizations are built on inequalities. Ancient Egypt at the time of the Pharaohs, Ancient Rome, European Kings some times before the Revolution, today's big buildings, all these depends on cheap workforce ready to do the ground work, modern slaves. There was a dream about technology which was supposed to make us free, but many decades later, you can see it doesn't work like that, and inequalities between the wealthiest and the poorest are even higher than they ever were.

CRISPR is a great tool to cure patient which suffer from a genetic disease. But it should never be used to alter the reproductive genes of a population. Most scientist working on this agree that the potential consequences are not predictable and therefore this should not be done at any time in the near future. I hope that they follow their own suggestion.

All dis-ease is curable with natural methods (of course according to God's will) - one only needs to look outside of Rockefeller taught medicine. IE: Malaria is easily treated with anti-parasitics like chlorine dioxide (see Jim Humble experiments before they shut him down) and other simple and effective sulfur type medicines. Strengthen the bodies terrain and toxins can't exist - neither organic or inorganic. This gene editing is nothing more than psychopathic insanity trying to eliminate the gentiles.

Cameron Brown Maybe , but I've seen some articles in some creditable publications that mention research studies that show that flipping gene sequences in mice have resulted in longer lifespan . @triplebackspace3623
@triplebackspace3623 8 жыл бұрын
+Cameron Brown Yes your right but I think that with medicine , and medical procedures there should be a strong moral and ethical drive to fight for both access and low cost options not just here but worldwide , death and illness is something that unites all mankind and as a species we should fight them together , and should benefit from medical advances more equally. I don't mind a moderate amount of profit for companies doing this type of work , but the current line for profit is set to high for a good moral stance. It is why the production cost for drugs are so obscured by the pharmaceutical industry.
