Gene Hoglan drum play through of Galaktikon track On My Way. From Gene's brand new DVD The Atomic Clock : The Clock Strikes Two.
"In November of 2008, as Brendon and I were just about to go in and track DethAlbum II, we hit some kind of contractual snag with the Turner Network, delaying the recording indefinitely. So, instead of eating the recording time that had been scheduled for many weeks, Brendon asked if I would be interested in doing a bunch of tunes that he'd had kicking around for awhile. And although we had only done the first DethAlbum together as well as the subsequent tour, I jumped at the chance to work with Brendon and Ulrich (Wild-our producer) in the studio again. Both guys make recording a total blast. So chill, so creative, so allowing of others to show their creativity, I'da been nuts to turn it down. Since I am not nuts, we all got in there and made a really killer album which went on to become Brendon Small's Galaktikon, a true gem."
"Not much to say about this track that I didn't already say on the DVD, but I sure enjoy the tune, as well as the part I had in creating the super-fun middle section. I recall that towards the end of my tracking, Brendon mentioned that the network were finally getting over their Cranial Rectitis and were going to finally give the go-ahead to get started on DethAlbum II, but as I found out way later, according to Brendon it was actually really touch and go to get that go-ahead from the CR-afflicted network. DethAlbum II quite possibly was not ever going to be made. Boy, that woulda made titling that third DethAlbum even more challenging..."
The Wait is Over!
GENE HOGLAN's "The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two" DVD Released February 3, 2017
Featuring Interviews with Members of ANTHRAX, TESTAMENT and More!
GENE HOGLAN's highly-anticipated second DVD, The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two, was released Feb. 3, 2017 and will feature the Clock himself breaking down some of his favorite beats, telling stories and playing along with tracks from several of his most legendary projects, including Strapping Young Lad, Testament and Death.
Filmed in high definition on a dozen cameras, with studio-mastered audio, this DVD offers a chance to see GENE HOGLAN play like never before. Though certainly inspirational for any level of musician, The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two is not only for drummers. Gene's easygoing, approachable attitude is readily apparent as he happily tells the viewer stories from his career, chatting as if with old friends about days in the studio or on the road.
An impressive roster of high-caliber musicians also weigh in over the course of the feature, offering stories about Gene and their experiences working with him. Interviews include Scott Ian and Frank Bello of Anthrax, 3 Inches of Blood/Revocation's Ash Pearson, Jason Bittner of Shadows Fall, Chuck Billy, Alex Skolnick, and Eric Peterson of Testament, and more.
Featured Tracks:
Testament: "Rise Up," "Native Blood"
Galaktikon: "On My Way"
Meldrum: "Walking Point," "A Toast To Romance"
Strapping Young Lad: "Skeksis"
Death: "Overactive Imagination," and "The Philosopher"
This DVD provides a glimpse into the philosophies, techniques, and history of one of metal's most influential musicians of all time.
The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two was recorded At The Warehouse Studios Vancouver, Canada. The DVD was edited by Leon Melas and directed by Rob Shallcross and Leon Melas, with co-direction from GENE HOGLAN. All audio was produced, engineered and mixed by Rob Shallcross with audio mastering from Greg Reely.

Much like people, in this day and age, are still watching, in awe, videos of Buddy Rich from the 70s, people will watch Hoglan videos in 2050 or something, and realize that he is the greatest metal drummer who ever lived, perhaps one of the greatest drummers period. Thomas Lang and Johnny Rabb are pretty amazing technically, and so is Mike Mangini, but when it comes to laying down an awesome beat that fits a song to a T, no one comes close to Gene. Symbolic, by Death, is still, to this day, the greatest drum album ever IMHO. And I'm never wrong. So there.

Such a great drummer. He's known for his speed, which is astounding for sure, but what I love about Gene's playing is the parts he comes up, and the orchestration he uses to execute them. The Strapping Young Lad track "Almost Again" is a good example. That is an interesting beat that no other metal player would create/write. VERY musical player.

For all the drummers out there that gripe about not being able to play double bass because you can't afford a $1000 set of Trick pedals this video should serve as the biggest STFU ever. Gene Hoglan, pair of 25 year old Camcos, while wearing boots. Stop blaming your gear and practice.

Wanna hear something cool as hell? I had Gene living with me for a month. Hanging out, taking lessons, life tips, eating generally getting to know the person whom I idolized as a fan. One day he gets a call. He asks me if I had ever heard of Dethklok. After explaining the show and us watching some DVR'd episodes he tells me the phone call he just received was Brendon wanting him for drums on an upcoming album and tour. I was jumping out of my seat. How many people can say they were witness to someone enlistment to a project? Greatful doesn't even cover it. All I can say is, GENE HOGLAN is my bro and BFF as well as an musical idol. Thank Big Daddy, love ya!

I can't even count how many times I've watched him play live. Back when he lived in Vancouver it seemed like every other weekend one of his numerous side projects would play at a dirty little bar downtown. He would almost always be out on the floor to watch the other bands and mingle outside in between sets. Chatted with him a bunch and he's incredibly chill and down to earth, all around nice guy.
