Narcissistic personality disorder - one of several types of personality disorders - is a mental condition in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others. But behind this mask of extreme confidence lies a fragile self-esteem that's vulnerable to the slightest criticism. That sums up Gene Simmons perfectly I think.

I can understand your explanation. But I also think the man just has no filter. I don't think it's an disorder, just disagree with you. He give's a lot to charity, the thing he never brags about. His point of view about sexes mayby not liked by left wing-rainbow-Karen's, but who cares really!? It's HIS point of view. I'm really getting tired(dare to say many people with me) of those rainbow-types bragging about eqeality and stuf. Don't get me wrong. Equality is good. Jokes en points of view differ. Lets keep it loose with one another.

@StonefieldJim4

@@micheladonofrio2285 Alison Scurr's accurate summary of NPD, and its (in my view, correct) application to Simmons is not "cutting him too much slack". Far from it: we need to know when we're dealing with people like this, not for reasons of sympathy, but to protect ourselves from them. And it's important to remember that a personality disorder is not a mental illness (despite there being overlapping factors too complex to go into here). I'm a psychotherapist and I work with many victims of 'narcs'. A non-clinical description of most narcs - and sociopaths, and psychopaths - is cruel, manipulative bastards who don't know how to love, and who you should avoid or leave or escape, at all costs. I should also disclose that a pathological narcissist tried to destroy my career and reputation. It was a devastating experience that plunged me into severe depression. In other words, I have a personal stake in this, not 'only' a professional one. The 'overlapping factors' in this case are that I have developed a finely attuned radar for spotting narcs, and I hope this amplifies my compassion for their victims. Whatever circumstances that shaped the 'narcissist-in-waiting' child, and however much we might sympathise with that child, all narcs are poisonous. I would add that this interview/therapy session is an exception that proves the rule. Therapists rarely encounter pathological narcissists in the therapy room, for the obvious reason that they don't think there's anything 'wrong' with them. You can guess what I'm going to say next. This is a celebrity narc being invited to talk to a celebrity psychologist, so of course he accepted the invitation! P.S. Pamela is great.

The fact that he refused to take his glasses off shows that he was really afraid of what that interview might bring out of him, he was afraid to be vulerable and show his vulnerability to the world, which might change his image of a rockstar. This was very interesting and entertaining. I loved the fact that Dr Conolly could read him like a book.

To defend himself he's made himself into a caricature of a pre-stone age caveman, a comic book persona. His secret is that he doesn't know how to be a man. As you say, repulsive, disturbing and with an cobbled together act that is both very sad and ludicrous at the same time. Meanwhile, Dr Stephenson is a brilliant professional psychologist. Please upload all the Shrink Rap episodes, I have a family member who is a psychotherapist and I find this fascinating. The way he speaks about women compared to Tony Curtis is remarkable. He cant see women as independent beings, they are only important and validated if they are looked upon by a man, its incredible. His mother both suffocated and abandoned him at the same time, (its called spousifying what she did to him) his first sexual experience was an older woman overpowering him, so he is so insecure in his masculinity he has to endlessly prove himself by undermining women sexually and emotionally, he made himself look a fool. I cant believe anyone would go to bed with this man.

I was a Kiss fan once. I went to a concert and at one point the audience wasn't apparently reacting to Gene as he wanted and he literally came to the front of the stage , and the band became instantly silent. Gene was offended by the audience's inaction or lack of reaction to his theatrics. He literally insulted the whole audience. I was no longer a fan of Gene Simmons. His demeanor here in the interview explains a lot and that is that he has always been insecure and portrays a false bravado by spouting what he believes to be intelligence. This was both sad and disturbing. The fact that he has achieved great financial success in his endeavors has not resulted in a happy, secure man.

Pamela was great, Gene was being Gene. He was honest, but you feel as though he will always have to have the upper hand in any situation and to me that’s a bit scary. Someone always needing to have some type of control without letting the control die naturally. He generalised a bit too much for my liking, but he’s done good in his life overall I would say.

He is so much less complex than he thinks he is. He hides behind his sunglasses in a feeble attempt at concealing all of his true nature, insecurities, and vulnerabilities, and yet by that very action, they are all amplified. He can’t stand how easy it is to figure him out. Because he has such a lack of self-awareness he can’t believe that someone else can see him since he’s never seen it. Gene isnt messed up at all from my perspective, he is totally frank about his life, he has learnt well from some very harsh experiences and from that he is an amazing survivor. It's easy to judge him or anyone else when you havent lived his life or walked in their shoes. Quite frankly I find his ideas about women interesting...being an older woman I can totally agree with him about when a man chooses the woman he wants to spend his life with and that they love and adore their partners....I have this with my partner of 24 years and I often say that I wish I could clone him for millions of women so that they could feel the love that I experience everyday. Pamela was often too insensitive and too direct for my liking......that's why it often felt uncomfortable. Gene is a strong minded man with strong beliefs which all come from his experiences of life. I found it refreshing to listen to him unfold his story. If Pamela would stop and listen more to the people she interviews instead of cutting them off it would be a more supportive interview. Thanks for posting, watched 4/1/2021 UK

"without going for the humour of it - a stiff proposition" - "hard" to tell if every word has d'oo'ble - is Pam offended or just holding back on laughs at that point? I laughed at that point - then I felt guilty for laughing. Seems to me that the brutal honesty that Mr S expresses about the animal in us ALL, is v uncomfortable for even the most learned & educated of psychos. Understanding the animal = 'ology. Unraveling the animal = impossible 'therapy. Fascinating battle lines drawn between ologists & therapists. "you've got to have an ology" - Lipman 'animals ARE' learn and live with it or animals are, mostly, but can be re-trained not to be so animal tricky!

I think some people take Gene Simmons a little too seriously.By wearing his sunglasses he showed a fair bit of vulnerability.He no doubt forecast that Pamela was going ask about his early painful childhood experiences and didn't want to turn the interview into crying session. I thought at times Pamela Stephenson morphed into some of her Not the Nine o'clock characters she used to mimic at some of her turn of phrases.
