Far from it: we need to know when we're dealing with people like this, not for reasons of sympathy, but to protect ourselves from them. And it's important to remember that a personality disorder is not a mental illness (despite there being overlapping factors too complex to go into here). I'm a psychotherapist and I work with many victims of 'narcs'. A non-clinical description of most narcs - and sociopaths, and psychopaths - is cruel, manipulative bastards who don't know how to love, and who you should avoid or leave or escape, at all costs. I should also disclose that a pathological narcissist tried to destroy my career and reputation. It was a devastating experience that plunged me into severe depression. In other words, I have a personal stake in this, not 'only' a professional one. The 'overlapping factors' in this case are that I have developed a finely attuned radar for spotting narcs, and I hope this amplifies my compassion for their victims. Whatever circumstances that shaped the 'narcissist-in-waiting' child, and however much we might sympathise with that child, all narcs are poisonous. I would add that this interview/therapy session is an exception that proves the rule. Therapists rarely encounter pathological narcissists in the therapy room, for the obvious reason that they don't think there's anything 'wrong' with them. You can guess what I'm going to say next. This is a celebrity narc being invited to talk to a celebrity psychologist, so of course he accepted the invitation! P.S. Pamela is great.
