Gene had little commercial success in the USA, due to his far to edgy persona, it didn't wash well with 50s America, he had more success in early 60s Europe where he was adopted as a kind of rocker, wearing leather and being outrageous, this gave him a couple of UK top 20 hits and regular spots on TV and radio
@Solodinho1155 ай бұрын
Yeah you are probably right. A edgy persona he was, in comparison to the mainstream of that era he certainly was. But I always find very much softness and soufulness in his character, and also his way of singing. In my opinion he tops elvis, gots more edge ;-)'

I'm thinking perhaps the vid in the top of the video was taken at the end - he is out of breath and obviously sweating - but either way, the man is in severe pain, and rocking anyway, so good on him.

@@JoshMaxPower Yes, it was at the end of the concert, he always performed in absolute pain and yet left his soul at the stage in every performance he did. His bandmates had to take him to emergency after every concert to fix him a new cast on his leg as he kept breaking them performing.

In the opening shots of this video Gene Vincent looks in pain. He is. Two and half years before this 1963 performance in Brussels, Gene had been in a serious auto accident while riding in a taxi cab in England with Eddie Cochran. Eddie was killed and Gene was crippled for life.
@howardmaryon3 жыл бұрын
I live about 5 miles from the scene of the accident. There is a rock and roll festival round here that was started to commemorate Eddie Cochrane, that usually happens every year. Like you say, you can see Gene is very uncomfortable, amazing that he kept working after such a painful injury.
@awordonawing2 жыл бұрын
I cry every time I watch this. I love Gene so much and he always comes to mind whenever I listen to John Lennon. There are particular moments in his solo career when the influence just jumps out and grabs you by the heart. God bless them both.
@adrinathegreat30956 ай бұрын
Genes leg was already messed up, there's various versions as to how this happened. The better more heroic had the accident whilst in the navy where he'd seen active service in Korea. Unverified. Or used his discharge money from getting out the navy and was dangerously riding around drunk when he crashed his bike narrowly missing and possibly killing or maiming a youngster crossing in front of him
@Solodinho1155 ай бұрын
@@adrinathegreat3095He was injured on april 17th, 1960 in a car crash along with his mate Eddie Cochran and his girlfriend. Eddie died, Gene's leg was messed up afterwards. He then began to bend forward to the mic after the crash, to reduce the pressure on his leg. But i do recall that not long after the crash, Gene can been seen in performances where he is remotely able to move on both legs. You barely notice he is injured. But I also wander why and how his leg injury worsened, anyone??

@old65rocker13 жыл бұрын
@FloorController He actually sustained the damaged leg orginally in a motor cycle accident while serving in the US Navy in the mid 50s. But you are right it was further damaged in the car accident, which killed Eddie. The navy doctors wanted to amputate the leg from the start, but Gene refused. He suffered great pain from that moment on. I wonder sometimes how he managed. A truly great performer. I am glad I saw him live in the early 60s. The memories will always linger.

A brilliant, heroic performance. In spite of the pain from his crippled leg, and after a long show, he comes out for this encore and rocks his ass off! Unbelievable! And take note, with all that head shaking and all that agony, he never even scrunches a note. His singing is perfect. No realtime auto-tune back then, baby! How many people could do that?
