YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is a 1974 American comedy horror film directed by Mel Brooks. The screenplay was co-written by Brooks and Gene Wilder. Wilder also starred in the lead role as the title character, a descendant of the infamous Dr. Victor Frankenstein, and Peter Boyle as the monster. The film co-stars Teri Garr, Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars, Richard Haydn, and Gene Hackman. The film is a parody of the classic horror film genre, in particular the various film adaptations of Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus produced by Universal Pictures in the 1930s. Much of the lab equipment used as props was created by Kenneth Strickfaden for the 1931 film Frankenstein. To help evoke the atmosphere of the earlier films, Brooks shot the picture entirely in black and white, a rarity in the 1970s, and employed 1930s' style opening credits and scene transitions such as iris outs, wipes, and fades to black. The film also features a period score by Brooks' longtime composer John Morris.
A critical favorite and box-office smash, Young Frankenstein ranks No. 28 on Total Film magazine's readers' "List of the 50 Greatest Comedy Films of All Time", No. 56 on Bravo's list of the "100 Funniest Movies", and No. 13 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 funniest American movies. In 2003, it was deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" by the United States National Film Preservation Board, and selected for preservation in the Library of Congress National Film Registry. It was later adapted by Brooks and Thomas Meehan as a stage musical. The film received nominations for the Academy Award for Best Sound and Best Adapted Screenplay, the latter of which was a nomination shared with Wilder and Brooks. On its 40th anniversary, Brooks considered it by far his finest (although not his funniest) film as a writer-director. (wikipedia)

GENE WILDER (1933 - 2016) was an American actor, writer and filmmaker. He is known mainly for his comedic roles, but also for his portrayal of Willy Wonka in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971), his work with Mel Brooks on the films The Producers (1967), Blazing Saddles (1974) and Young Frankenstein (1974), as well as his four films with Richard Pryor: Silver Streak (1976), Stir Crazy (1980), See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989) and Another You (1991).
Wilder began his career on stage, and made his screen debut in an episode of the TV series The Play of the Week in 1961. Although his first film role was portraying a hostage in the 1967 motion picture Bonnie and Clyde, Wilder's first major role was as Leopold Bloom in the 1967 film The Producers for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. This was the first in a series of collaborations with writer/director Mel Brooks, including 1974's Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, which Wilder co-wrote, garnering the pair an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

MEL BROOKS (b. 1926) is an American actor, comedian, film producer, director and screenwriter. With a career spanning over 7 decades he is known as a creator of broad farces and parodies widely considered to be among the best film comedies ever made.[2] Brooks began his career as a comic and a writer for Sid Caesar's variety show Your Show of Shows (1950-1954) alongside Woody Allen, Neil Simon and Larry Gelbart. Together with Carl Reiner, he created the comic character The 2000 Year Old Man. He wrote, with Buck Henry, the hit television comedy series Get Smart, which ran from 1965 to 1970. In middle age, Brooks became one of the most successful film directors of the 1970s, with many of his films being among the top 10 moneymakers of the year they were released. His best-known films include The Producers (1967), The Twelve Chairs (1970), Blazing Saddles (1974), Young Frankenstein (1974), Silent Movie (1976), High Anxiety (1977), History of the World, Part I (1981), Spaceballs (1987), and Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993). A musical adaptation of his first film, The Producers, ran on Broadway from 2001 to 2007 and was remade into a musical film in 2005. (wikipedia)

When I was in the eighth grade I was called to the principle’s office where I found my dad who told me he was there to take me to my dentist appointment. I began to say that I didn’t have a dentist appointment before my dad cut me off. We left the school and walked across the street to the Orange Mall 6 Theaters to see Young Frankenstein and then he returned me to the remainder of the school day.

Best movie ever. Gene Wilder a genius who does not get enough credit. The entire cast was brilliant and the movie is so quotable. The poo poo undies scene may be my favorite, but the scene with Gene Hackman is equally delightful. The movie’s impact is so strong that Christopher Moore used “Abby Normal” in 2010’s Bite Me-my favorite of his books. I interviewed him; he was a huge fan of the film.

RIP Peter Boyle, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, and Gene Wilder...you are all in my memories as being part of one of the greatest comedies in the history of cinema. And to you Mel Brooks, at 96 years young? May you live long and enjoy your accomplishments! Halloween is coming soon and I'll be ready for my tradition of watching the original 'Frankenstein', 'The Bride of Frankenstein', 'The Son of Frankenstein, and finally 'Young Frankenstein' in the coming days ahead.

The lesson in movie making of Young Frankenstein is if you make a spoof, do not spoof out of spite, or make fun of films you hate. Do it out of love. Young Frankenstein is as much a work of devotion to the classic horror era as it is a pi## take.

7:36 - I love this story. This truly shows the passion of both Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks forward the art of theater, movies, and comedy, and what must have been unspoken deep, deep trust and respect by Mel Brooks toward Gene Wilder (probably cultivated by working with him in Blazing Saddles). Brooks knew that if Wilder truly showed that in his heart of hearts this was the right move, if Wilder passionately fought for it because it was the right thing to do, then any doubts he'd have would be extinguished and he'd put it in the movie. As Wilder said, Brooks believed that a script is built upon columns, and if after shaking those foundational columns the scene and concept still stands, then it must be in the movie. His test was to rattle those columns and test if this scene would stand, and it held firm, and this added scene ended up becoming one of the best scenes of the movie despite Brooks's initial unsureness. It's heartwarming, and shows the genius in both of them, particularly Mel Brooks.

Loved this parody /spoof of this beloved classic! Found out years later that Mary E Stonecraft who created Frankenstein was originally Titled " A Modern Prometheus ". I also read that she and her friends were sitting inside her house going around telling Ghost Stories to pass the timeI ; it was a dark and stormy day ! Whatever she did was the stuff of legend- movies and even cartoons ! The only thing that disappoints meknow is they never went further with a sequel ! Then again why mess with the original film. Still cracks me up with laughter !

The comedic talent of "Young Frankenstein" - Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder's comedic writing and directing genius, as well as their acting, who along with Madeline Khan, Marty Feldman, Cloris Leachman, Pete Boyle, Teri Garr, etc, is without equal. Why ? because of the talented comedic actors are not trying to be funny, they are naturally funny in their gestures, their delivery, their expressions, their persons, their artistic skill and timing, their masterful professionalism in taking direction from the master of comedy movie making Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder, who naturally do what most of cannot do, make us laugh out loud, make us smile. My favorite comedic actrress in Young Frankenstein is Madeline Khan. She had such an air of natural comedic funniness about her - her accent, her delivery, her persona, her personality that permeates throughout every scene she does. She made the movie thousand times funnier than it would have been without her, and with all the other awesome the comedic talent around her - Brooks, Wilder, Feldman, Boyle, Leachman, etc, it's pure magic. With Madeline Khan's death, it literally means the world far less funny that was. There's nothing I can say to pay tribute to all the great comedic talent that made Young Frankenstein that hasn't already been said. Thank You and God Bless You Mel Brooks, to those who have since passed away - Gene Wilder, Madeline Khan, your gift of joy and laughter magic will always be in our hearts - RIP

Frankly (no pun intended) I always thought the novel Frankenstein was and is the best of them all. The novel was alot scarier than any of the films were. It's interesting that Young Frankenstein actually had scenes where the characters quote actual lines from the novel. Abbott and Costello did a Frankenstein comedy but it wasn't a parody being the monster characters were played straight.

Kenneth Strickfaden (May 23, 1896 - February 29, 1984) was an electrician, film set designer, and electrical special effects creator. Beginning with his effects on Frankenstein (1931) he became Hollywood's preeminent electrical special effects expert. He created the science fiction apparatus in more than 100 motion picture films and television programs, from the Frankenstein films to The Wizard of Oz and The Mask of Fu Manchu to television's The Munsters, and his final work, Young Frankenstein (1974). Gene wilder said that he thought up "young Frankenstein " but it wasn't the first time that it was said, in the original movie, they said it. "Young Frankenstein "

I would have loved to have heard the argument between Mel and Gene over the musical number.

Without Young Frankenstein we'd have no Mean Streets, The Conversation, McCabe, Apocalypse Now, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Black Beauty or Clockwork Orange. That's just for starters!

I don't know about the others, but Clockwork Orange was released about two or three years before Young Frankenstein. It was 1972. Young Frankenstein was late 1974.

I had no idea that was Gene Hackman. Even when I watched the movie several times I realized I knew the actor's voice but I couldn't figure out who it was.
