In the early 1650s, England defeated Scotland in the Battles of Dunbar and Worcester. Almost 500 Scottish prisoners were transported to America to become indentured servants-which is why some of you might find Scottish surnames in colonial New England genealogical records. In 2013, an archaeological discovery in Durham led to the piecing together of their story: how they came to be prisoners and how they fared in the New World. Join us as colonial historian Erica Hahn weaves the story of this fascinating and little-known chapter of history.

I've a lot of Scottish, though my prisoner Scott ancestor (9th gg) was William Tosh (MacIntosh) sent to work in MA, eventually settling on Block Island, RI. He married an Irish woman who had also been shipped out to New England. Great presentation! Thank you so much.

I am proud as hell to be descended from a Scottish prisoner of war. I have ancestors escaping the Irish Great Hunger and also ancestors who were the land owners evicting Irish tenants. There are newspaper articles for 2 generations of English landowners in Ireland getting shot for evicting tenants. They were Waylands.

Ty so much. I already knew some but learned more. My geneology has brought me here & i, for 1, couldn't be prouder of having my gg come here as SPOW. To think of the strength he had as a 20 yo, to survive Battle of Dunbar, the march to Durham, the ocean voyage & years of indentured work. Then 3 marriages & 14 children & countless grands, of which, i am 1. He is John Mackholme. I believe there may have been a brother David as well. I continue my studies & ty again.

I descend from Robert Dunbar who was a Scot POW sent by Oliver Cromwell to the Saugus Iron Works in New England near Boston. He was a prisoner of war slave indentured servant and had to purchase his own freedom. Happy to say he, and his wife who had come from Scotland with cash to pay for his freedom, did quite well after.

Hi, I’m a Robert Dunbar line as well. The topic of Rose has been debated in a variety of platforms. Usually she’s just recorded as unknown but possibly someone he sent for or whom he went back for. I’d be thrilled to hear of new information come to light.

Thank you very much EricaHahn!! I found your webinar very informative. Perhaps the webinar will give me a tool to get through the brick wall. I’ve spent the last seven or eight years searching for my Mcdonald family line, which seems to have disappeared sometime around 1814 to 1825. The last Mcdonald I found was in ulster area of Ireland. However, I do have a story from my father that our ancestors came from the highlands. At night, they would go down to the lowlands appropriate cattle, sheep, and crops, then return to the highlands before dawn. I have not been able to figure out how they made the jump from Scotland, Highlands and islands over to ulster Ireland to Canada, and into Vermont. By the way, I am a member of the Mayflower society under multiple ancestors. I’ve been able to document lines to 15 Mayflower Ancestors. I’m still working on.

The numbers of POWs pale into insignificance when compared to the numbers of Scots transported to the New World (and elsewhere) as a consequence of the Highland Clearances. At a time when sheep were valued more than humans, when Scots were burned out of their homes, when English (and avaricious Scots) landowners valued profit over peaceful hard-working inhabitants the inhumanity exhibited was (and continues to be) truly staggering...

My mother's 5th g. grandpa was on the Unity and I can assure you the descendants of Allestar McMallin have done well for themselves. They're described as "as prolific as jackrabbits and harder to kill than a tick." They were the first pioneers to go west.

A number of years ago I read the story of Peter Williamson , commonly known as Indian Peter. He was, as a child kidnapped in the port city of Aberdeen,Scotland and sent to the New World as an indentured apprentice. He didn't volunteer, he wasn't a prisoner. The then Provost of Aberdeen had a wee money making sideline, he had a scheme where he kidnapped children and sent them off to the Americas. It's a good book dealing with Peters life, worth a read. I know it isn't linked to the P.O.W. never the less it shows how other Scots found themselves in the New World.

My 4th great grandfather, John McKenzie, may have been a loyalist (gasp! -if he's the same John McKenzie) and prisoner of war after the battle of Moore's Creek Bridge in North Carolina. This genealogy stuff can be difficult trying to determine what and what not to believe.

My ancestor was definitely sold into "slavery" in 1745, it was well recorded and I have all of the records of the prisons he was in and what ship he was transported on and the British records specifically say they were being sold. I don't have the resource with me but it is all in a book, or records file, compiled by an English source I think.

I'm a 10th Generation Descendant of Peter Grant (1631-1712) BATTLE: Battle of Dunbar at Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland on 3 Sep 1650 SHIP/ARRIVAL: The ketch Unity; late Dec 1650, MA Bay Colony PRISONER AND LIST: Peter Grant, #11 on the “Scots at Lynn, 1653, Iron Works Inventory”1 Peter Grant was sold to work at the Lynn Iron Works in Massachusetts and like his fellow prisoners probably received his first medical attention after the battle from his purchasers. In 1651 another battle for Prince Charles, the Battle of Worcester, resulted in the deportation to New England of Peter's brother, James Grant, and a kinsman of theirs, another James Grant. In 1652 Peter was working for a sawmill in Maine, and probably recieved his freedom and Ï10 to start life on his own there. The Maine sawmill was in financial trouble and it is possible that the remaining Scottish prisoners were discharged from their bondage early to relieve the owners of the mill from the responsibility of feeding the laborers.

A very good presentation, well done. However just a note that the Union Jack actually comprises three flags English, Scottish and Irish (St Patrick's). I understood that some of these prisoners went to Jamaica but that's not specifically mentioned. Can you confirm this please or are the lists just say west indies ? I have an ancestor dropped off in Jamaica I'm trying to track. I have no details for him so this is the journey start.

My direct paternal ancestor was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia in 1640. His name was James Stewart, and he only lived until 1679. I wish I knew why his parents came to early colonial Virginia because I don't hear much about Scottish immigration during that time period. I do know that his forefathers resided in Blackhall Manor, in Renfrewshire. The small manor is still there today. That's about all I know about him. Later generations after him, after the Revolutionary War, moved directly west into Greenup, Kentucky, and a couple generations later on to Iowa and Missouri. Anyways, I don't know if James was a Covenanter or not, nor do I know if his father, William Charles Stewart, was part of any battle, a prisoner of war turned into an indentured servant, or anything like that. I know nothing about the REASONS for why they emigrated over. I would give anything to know.

I thought it was very sad and also that the English have shown that cruelty all over the world. I knew it started at home at some point. I believe my mother was Scottish. I would describe her as being stoic as you are. However, my mother does not look like you. She had brown eyes, set far apart, with a pointy nose and thin lips with very white skin. Did not tan. My mother in law was a Grant known as Irish but I wonder if Scottish Irish. My mother thought she was English.

The Scottish and the English were conquered by the Norman. The so called Scottish War of Independence was a power grabbing war between Norman Lords. Most Norman Lords had lands in England and Scotland. The Royalist's in the 17th century were not moderate, Have you ever heard of 'The divine right of Kings' ?
