I found a wonderful legal notice where the lawyers were trying to locate all the heirs; it gave me the names of children I had not known about before!

Great advice, Lisa. But on the Marriage record, note that this is for a license, not the actual marriage. And the date of the paper may be from a day after the license to as much as 2 weeks later. The license may have been issued on the day of the marriage, or maybe a few days or weeks before. Or the marriage may have never taken place, although that was rare. On Ancestry, I add a fact for the license with the newspaper source. That gives me a reference for a date to look for an additional record of the marriage. Just keep in mind this is almost like a hint for the marriage. I love using newspapers for all kinds of info on the ancestors.

I used an obituary from a local paper, which was longer than a shortened version in another paper, which gave me early DAR chapter leadership by a great great grandmother.

Did counties post notices of unpaid property taxes in the late 1800’s early 1900’s? Some counties still list that information with the local newspaper. I’m trying to research in NC
