I've had one of these installed on my furnace for years. I've confirmed water is getting to the unit when the furnace is running and installed a new pad. According to my humidity meter in the main living area of the house, this thing does absolutely nothing. It doesn't change the humidity in the house at all.

Mine just started leaking after 10 years of no maintenance and after reading your comment, it sounds like I might as well just shut off the water valve to the unit and not waste the time or money to put in a new filter or anything else to try to stop the leak.

@@Jukebox45s I'd love for someone to prove me wrong and tell me these units actually work. I won't be using it again this year. But someone send me a link showing this thing working and I'll work on mine.

SHARKBITE ball valve sold at HD. Super simple install and no sweating. anyone watching this video should beware that Saddle Tap is GARBAGE that WILL eventually FAIL in one way or another. Homeowners should change out ALL Saddle Taps, espescially if you have an ice maker on your fridge. The water pump motor will burn up trying to suck water from a mineral clogged valve. Thanks for the video!

I checked the water supply first to make sure it was not a water supply problem like Mi heating guy had. Good video, but I think the water supply going to the solenoid should have been the first thing that was tested. I ended up replacing the solenoid assembly, it already had the new filter & new orifice. Working like a charm now. I took it apart the old one afterwards & saw the water strainer was clean, but the orifice has calcium built up on the bottom. I could have bought a kit that has the orifice & strainer for about $10.00 + shipping, but decided for another $40 I could have everything new, in case the solenoid had calcium build up in it too. I figured I saved at least a $100 doing it myself, so for another $40 everything new was the ticket. BTW if you try to just change to strainer and orifice you really should take off and put it in a vice to remove & replace orifice & strainer. Another reason I got the new one, all these parts were already installed. I just needed to hook up the two water lines & the wires. Very easy to do.

Grrr....So complicated to find that inline solenoid strainer, in Canada. GeneralAire supplier in Canada doesn't even know what I'm talking about, even when I give them sku numbers from the US GA site. Great vid, tho! Very helpful, indeed.

I put a nice ball valve in mine and never an issue...these humidifiers are a dream compared to the old drum style. The old drum style one here would go out of adjustment constantly. A pain indeed.

I am replacing the solenoid and the existing saddle valve however, you said the saddle valves are no longer code compliant? Should I be installing a ball valve instead? I'd like to use a new saddle valve as it's easier to install... installing a ball valve means splicing one into copper soldering etc... Thanks

Turn up the volume so that we can learn what you are doing. Either that or turn off the background noise. Furnace maybe?
@peterwilson4137

I found that the enormous amount of background noise made it impossible most of the time to understand the dialogue. There was no general introduction as to how the humidifier functions. I could not grasp the standing up relevance for the installation of the pad. I could not understand the extensive plumbing tasks being undertaken. Since it appeared to be a dismantling of pipe connections, I assumed it to be a tedious task for the maintenance procedure. My dealer is offering this model, and I was looking for clear information to understand exactly what I would be purchasing, how it functions, and what maintenance is required. None of these issues were clarified.

This video's geared towards HVAC technicians who understands how the humidifier operates the operation of the humidifier is simple the humidistat calls for humidity opens up the solenoid in water flows at the top of the humidifier through the pad and drains out the bottom warm air is blown across the pad and humidifies the house

I suggest the troubleshooting was backwards, should have started with making sure water was flowing to the humidifier!

Thanks for the video. Question please... does the front facing wire on the solenoid valve connect to the white wire and the back facing wire connect to the red wire? That's what it looks like. Reason I ask is that the new 990-53 solenoid is configured different than the old one that I'm replacing. It didn't come with a diagram. Thanks.

I just got one of these awful humidifiers the other day and it won't give me more than 28 to 30 on the humidifier scale. My house and nose are very dry and they claim it's working properly for a 2800 square foot house. My old Honeywell could be set up to 50 humidity if I wanted, but this thing is useless! Worst $585 humidifier one could ever buy! When it was really cold and my heater was set to 80 degrees, the humidity was even less - only 20 to 25! These things should be taken off of the market. Not only that, but a lot of bitter cold flows all around them and underneath.

+J Pol Well this humidifier would be too small for your house generally are 1099 would work better if it's extremely cold outside you do not want a lot of humidity in your house roughly between 20 and 30% Not a big fan of these humidifiers This humidifier is rated up to 15 to 1800 ft² house thanks for watching
@jpol1439
@jpol1439 6 жыл бұрын
I think you may have erred a little there. The company claims it's rated for 2800 sq ft, but it really does act as though it's a tiny humidifier. It doesn't matter if the setting is set to 5 or 75, you get the same amount of humidity regardless. At any rate, I think most people are probably best avoiding furnace humidifiers overall and just buying the big five gallon ones sold in stores. Pretty well everyone ends up replacing the furnace humidifiers after a few years anyway and then there are the installation charges on top of it. I was hoping to buy a Venta 5-gallon humidifier but they aren't easy to get in Canada and I'm not a fan of ordering by mail if it can possibly be avoided.

+J Pol I'm not a fan of General air humidifiers evaporator pants cost too much and solenoids always go bad A 1042 humidifier Is only good for 15 to 1800 ft² the 1099 general air is good for 18 to 3000 ft²But at 20゚ outside you do not want your humidifier running at 45% Humidity you want about 20 to 30% or what the house can handle without producing mass amounts of condensation on the windows thanks for the reply and thanks for watching

Dear J Pol, Each humidifier sold is designed for a very specific humidity output, so sizing a unit correctly for your home is essential. It sounds like it was not sized correctly, and I see another person commenting agrees. Additionally, if you supply your humidifier with hot water instead of cold, you will increase the output. Also, if your home has lots of wood (floors, etc.), fireplaces, is older, you may need more output than what is rated for a typical unit. There are numerous factors that should be discussed with your HVAC professional prior to selection. This humidifier is a widely-popular model that contractors regularly install, with thousands of satisfied people.

Hello, i have this exact same unit (General Aire 1042) Does the solenoid control how much water is actually being let into the humidifier or it's simply an ON or OFF function? I find that there is alot of water being pushed through the filter when the unit is running. Is this amount of drainage normal? See video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iKedZs-Y0q3emp8.html Is there some sort of sensor somewhere that regulates how much water to let into the unit?
@TheGhettoLobster
@TheGhettoLobster 7 жыл бұрын
The part that regulates how much water you let in is called a 'saddle valve' (google it). Crank it clockwise to lessen the amount of flow that is sent to the humdifier pad. However I will warn you, these things are super cheap and the needle that pierces the pipe tend to get sediment on them and get stuck. I would recommended opening and closing it annually to prevent the valve from being closed. Hope this helps
