This is the story of General William C. Westmoreland, an Eagle Scout from Spartanburg County who earned medals for bravery in World War II and became a Four-Star General and the Military Commander of Allied Forces in Vietnam from 1964 to 1968. Historians, family and friends remember the uncompromising values of the man behind the four stars.

My dad was his driver when he was in Vietnam from 68-69! It was funny how he got the job! He was driving in a convoy and he was the only truck driving almost in the ditch! When asked why, he said “where would you plant the mines in the road or the ditch”? So from that day forward he was his driver! He was from Ky, so not far from Where The general lived so I’m sure they had a lot in common!

Being a Westmorland-type officer is the supreme insult. A lot of good people from my generation died because of his lack of integrity. His stars and medals were bought in blood. The US Army and especially the NCO corps had to be rebuilt after he was done with it.

Just wanna set the record straight that a week ago I commented on an unrelated story where I said gen Westmoreland was on trial in nyc for inflated nva deaths, I stand corrected, the trial was he was suing cbs news for defamation and cbs settled out of court. I was with a veterans group and actually got to meet the general, very pleasant gentlemen, this was in 1982.

There is still a debate about William Westmoreland, and I think that is appropriate. He certainly came to Vietnam with solid credentials. What happened next, I think, was delusional, in that we were caught in a civil war with no end in sight, and yet victory for U.S. troops was always on the horizon. Westmoreland was part and parcel of that mythology. As any traveler in the desert knows, the horizon moves away from you with cruel constancy.

Orville Brown is correct in every way when he comments, "The book by Lewis Sorely describes him as a self-promoter, promoted above his ability, who mismanaged the war for four years, ensured the American defeat and then tried to rewrite history at Chairman of Chief of Staffs. The argument by Sorley is credible." Again, I would kindly ask anyone that disagrees to watch Lewis Sorley's presentation to the US Army War College and draw an informed conclusion. @

You people are mistaken. General Westmoreland was a thoroughly decent man who lead his troops with honour and integrity. What seems to escape your bitter opinions is that his tactics had virtually won the war by 1968, and the Tet Offensive was essentially the last throw of the dice for the VC. Secondly, he was forced into fighting a limited war by MacNamara and the rest of the "best and brightest" clowns in Washington, who believed the war could be won on a budget. Unfortunately for Westmoreland, he lacked the bombastic ego of that other great warrior, MacArthur, which meant he didn't speak out (of turn), as perhaps he could have done; but then you armchair generals would probably have attacked him for being too aggressive. So in conclusion, I'll leave you with this thought: we had won the war in Vietnam under Westmoreland, just as we had won in Korea under MacArthur. But in both instances, spineless Democrat presidents removed both men for being too tough on the commies.

Westmoreland, was perhaps the most symbolic man possible of the contemporary Pentagon thinking. His focus was the battlefield and the battlefield alone. He thought maintaining a high kill/death ratio would surely bring victory. The superior army with the superior tech and training would always be the victorious one, and all other factors were to be disregarded. Abrams replaced Westmoreland, and implemented an actually sane policy based on the realization of who and what he was fighting. But by that point, it was too late. The South Vietnamese puppet government had virtually no support, the war was largely and increasing unpopular at home, the troops morale low, and Westmoreland's boneheaded insistence on killing everything that moved had largely galvanized the Vietnamese people against USA. Defeat was inevitable, but it was for political reasons as opposed to military ones.

I was assigned to a unit that was deployed to South Vietnam July 1968 and I returned home in 1969. In my opinion Westmoreland was not given enough authority to win in South Vietnam. To win in South Vietnam first objective would have to be to destroy the communist North Vietnamese ability to send troops and supplies into South Vietnam and destroy the enemy's ability to plan and organize the agression into South Vietnam. Thus destroying the enemy's war materials while those materials were in the enemy's ports, factories, rail yards before the supplies started down the trails and roads into South Vietnam. Follow the blueprints used against the aggressors in world war two. In reality what happened was LBJ micro managed the bombing missions into North Vietnam by selecting the targets for the air force. Many times the air force was flying over military targets and then bombing bridges and power plants completely passing over military targets. Plain and simple the President and his advisers mis managed the bombing missions. We had the finest soldiers and equipment ever used in war and we won every single battle of the war. The President messed up by not letting the military service's properly conduct the war.

A great man, a great American, and a great General that served our country with honor! General Westmoreland played the hand of cards that was given to him by LBJ and McNamara. He was under the civilian authority (LBJ) and had to fight the war the way "they" wanted him to, period! It would have been much different had Nixon been the President when LBJ was. The mindset of democrat leadership, when fighting a war, leads us to defeat every time!
