Welcome to A Psychologist Talks! Today we are talking about Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), an interesting, important, yet often over-extended diagnosis. Like most episodes in this series, I will focus more energy on exploring key features that help with differential diagnosis, rather than the symptoms themselves. For GAD, this includes a dominant focus on the symptom of "worry" - a consuming worry with collateral damage. Second, I will talk about the absence of diagnostic alternatives that I believe often has providers defaulting to GAD. Finally, I also briefly mention of the psychodynamic concept of an "anxious personality," which I believe would more accurately depict a good chunk of cases that are labeled GAD.
