Ray is my favorite character. James Ransone's performance is underrated as hell. Yes, all the singing and ranting about NAMBLA and pussy is hilarious, but especially near the end he has some incredible dramatic acting. After leaving Baghdad, he completely transforms as a character into a much quieter, almost depressed and burned out dude. His crying and screaming during the football game as he tries to fight Rudy (a guy he has been nothing but best friends with all campaign) is heartbreaking. Evan Wright's book goes a little more into Ray's story. He's a highly competent RTO, possibly the best in the battalion, but he is constantly fucking around and goofing off because at his core he doesn't really respect recon. He basically joined it as a joke and doesn't take much of it seriously. Basically he thinks he's better than the others because he doesn't buy into the cheesey moto "oorah" Marine culture. Hence his outburst of anger with Rudy at the end of the football game. TLDR Ray is possibly the most complex character on the show and Ransone did an amazing job portraying him.

At 8:53, Total respect between the Lieutenant (Lt Fick), and his platoon sergeant, the Iceman Brad Colbert. The best kind of commanders serving in that conflict, were often at that level. Both men were promoted. Colbert retired as a Master Sergeant in 2006. Nate Fick is just accomplished - he wrote what is considered one of the best books about war from the junior officer POV - one of the most engaging stories and historical records (it's both) I've ever read: One Bullet Away. I think it's meant to symbolize that they are over it all and ready to move on. They came to do a job and they did it. At the end of the day, it wasn't any greater or more fantastic than they remember it. And the more 'moral' characters know instinctively that they would rather not go back over it. The other Marines all come to the same realization after they watched a bit more of the video. Well, everyone except for Trombley. Which is a powerful statement of it's own. Trombley and people like him are 'Death' and 'Hell follows with them' IE People like him came to Iraq and brought Hell (fire and death) with them.
