What model tuba? I got an Elf, (student Eb) bottom first valve screw is crap, need a tool to unscrew, there was also a weird dent in the crook of first slide, otherwise it’s great for the price, love it.

I bought a Wessex Dolce Eupho about 2 years ago. I’m really happy with it. I have bought a 3v Bari and will be picking it up soon. The great thing about Wessex is that they also personally quality control all their instruments before leaving the factory.

Hi Trent, this was 2017, you are not here anymore on the internet....and we have missed you. I have a simple Chinese cornet, but it sounds really great with a big V shaped mouthpiece. Round, full, deep and very powerfull. Anyway when you have time and interest again please come back to show your things and tell us your stories about brassplaying

When can we expect to see a video review and demonstrative comparison of a range of Alphorns? Surely by now many people, imcluding yourself, are questioning if it is really an instrument collection or viable youtube channel without featuring at least several Alphorns. Keep up the good work!

The process of making instruments this way is called "stenciling". For example, Wurlitzer sold all manner of instruments, but many instruments in their catalog were made by other manufacturers. I have a straight C/Bb/A cornet which is labeled Wurlitzer, but is likely a Martin. Sometimes is was done for individual music stores too.

The practice of writing your own brand name on a generic instrument is generally referred to as "stencilling" (or they're "stencil" horns). There's a third kind of Chinese instrument - which are basically stencils, but with aftermarket QA and refinements done by the dealers (joint quality checked for internal blobs and other obstructions, valve alignment checked, etc) - Austin custom brass does this IIRC.

@@ewetho I'm sure it is - the Chinese are getting better and better at producing reasonable quality clones (often of Yamaha's)... Throw in a decent retailer and your chances of a decent horn for not much money are actually pretty good. trent, i wish you'd at least reassure us that the intonation problem exists with the original chinese mouthpiece. i have at least one chinese mouthpiece that causes suspect intonation, and it's not inconceivable that say a non-standard backbore profile/depth has been paired with a non-standard trumpet geometry

I was under the impression at least that the Wessex EP100 Euphonium was a rebranded Jinbao. Very much identical to Mack Brass, Schiller, etc. compensating Euphoniums. Is this correct or not? If what your saying is true I may take a second look at Wessex, they were slightly higher than a few of the others, such as Mack Brass, but if the quality is higher it may be worth it.
@TrentHamilton

Wessex instruments are made in China, but have better quality checking and often have their own modifications made to the designs.
@kc0jtl

Thanks for the quick response. I was also interested, which sites do you use to purchase these Chinesium horns directly from the manufacturer? I have been trying to find a Jinbao JBEP-1150S. I have looked around aliexpress, but haven't found a compensating model like the 1150. I am hoping to compare the prices with these other companies that retail it. It would be even nicer to have one custom engraved. If the price isn't substantial, I will probably go with Wessex.

Hi, I'm fascinated by brass instruments but I don't play none and am very unfamiliar with it's peculiarities (I'm a violinist lol), hope asking doesn't offend: What is the difference between a cornet and a Trumpet? it always bugs me.
@andrewdavidson9171
@andrewdavidson9171 5 жыл бұрын
Band teacher here. The cornet has a conical bore meaning that the pipes taper the closer you get to the mouthpiece while the trumpet is more cylindrical meaning the pipes are not tapered. Or, at least that's how it was with older instruments. In reality, modern trumpets are just hybrids of the types of bores. In fact they are more cylindrical now days. This means that while older trumpets sound much brighter than old cornets, the different is mitigated in newer models. This means the only difference that changes the sound is the wrap of the two instruments (how the tubing is coiled). Cornets typically have 2 bends in the lead pipe while the trumpet has one. Cornets also sometimes have a bend in the bell area called a shepherd's crook. However, lots of american models dont have them. Hope that helps. I think Trent Hamilton has a video about that too
@ivyssauro123
@ivyssauro123 5 жыл бұрын
@@andrewdavidson9171Thanks for the awnser! So it's much more complex than I thought huh? I thought it would either be the same thing but interchangable names depending on context (i.e. Fiddle vs Violin) or something completely different only someone completely unfamiliar with the craft would mistake one for the other (e.g. Violins vs Violas). Is it's role in a brass band any different? Does a cornet player normally also play Trumpet and vice versa? are fingerings different?
@andrewdavidson9171
@andrewdavidson9171 5 жыл бұрын
@@ivyssauro123 brass bands normally only have cornet players if they're keeping with English tradition. Even in the states where I live, we only use cornets in brass band. However, most concert bands and big bands use only trumpet. If you can play one, you can play the other. I switched from cornet to trumpet when I was 12 but I play both nowadays with flugelhorn as well.
@hartleymartin
@hartleymartin 4 жыл бұрын
Cornets have a different developmental history to the trumpet. But for the sake of comparison, a cornet has a rounder less strident tone than a trumpet. This is partly due to the bore being more conical, the different wrap of the lead pipe affecting the air flow, but also the mouthpiece was more an internal V shape rather than the rounded C shape of a trumpet mouthpiece. Basically, different tone colours and different history of development.

You should be fine because having to pull out the main tuning slide is no big deal. My high school band director used to yell at trumpeters whose tuning slides were all the way in. (I know this is a cornet, but we both know that trumpets also have these.) The microphone you're using actually makes the harmonic series sound flat.
