שלום רועי. הייתי מצפה ממך להיות קצת פחות מנומס ולהגיד מדי פעם דברים קצת פחות נעימים. כמו למשל - להגיד שאנחנו חיים בסביבה אחרת מאשר אנשי התרבות המערבית . ולמרות שאולי היינו רוצים לחיות כאילו יש לנו שכנים שוויצריים , אנחנו נמצאים בסביבה שמבחינתה להפסיק עכשיו יתפס כחולשה. דבר שיסכן אותנו עוד יותר. להגיד ״אני לא חושב כמוך… ״ בלי לתת קצת הסבר , מפספס את ענין הדו שיח. כזכור אתה לא מראיין אלא משוחח, דבר שמאפשר לך גם לזרוק את הכדור לצד השני עם מבט קצת אחר. תודה

דיון מעולה, חשוב, מחכים. הנושא הזה מעלה בי זיכרון שיעקב אחימאיר העיתונאי העלה לפני שנים רבות להקים הישראל, לצד מוזיאון יד ושם - מוזיאון עולמי לזכרון הג'נוסייד. אני סבור שזה רעיון אדיר אבל אין מי שירים את הכפפה. על כל פנים - תודה

תודה רבה על השיחה רועי. איך דן שיפטן נוהג לומר על אנשים כאלה? "או שמדובר ברשע, או שמדובר באוויל. אני לא מכיר את האיש, אז נידון אותו לכף זכות ונניח שמדובר באוויל" צריך פתרון פוליטי? it has to be over כמילותיו האחרונות בשיחה? אני תוהה באיזה עולם אנשים כמוהו חיים. הוא באמת, אבל באמת לא מבין שאין פתרון פוליטי מול חמאס? שאם לא נמגר את הארגון הזה, לא רק שהעסק לא יסתיים, אלא נחזור אליו עוד 10-15 שנה עם עשרות אלפי נטבחים בצד שלנו, ומאות אלפים בצד שלהם? חבל שלא שאלת אותו את זה בסיום. מצד השני, התשובה של האיש ההזוי והמסוכן הזה היתה ברורה

This was a really interesting conversation, but at the same time I agree with some of the other commenters that you were too polite and receptive to the Professor’s responses and did not push back and sufficiently present the Israeli perspective. Particularly with regards to his conclusion, that is western, myopic, and will only perpetuate more suffering on the people of Gaza. לשמוע רעיונות זה דבר נפלא, אבל בעולם שמעריך אופטיקה אני לא בטוח שיש צורך לשתף בפומבי שיחה באנגלית עם יהודי שהוא מומחה לרצח עם, במיוחד עם המסקנות שהוא הסיק.

1. I am not sure I understood correctly, can mass and systematic r*pe be considered a genocide, even if it is not involving physical killing? 2. There is a problem with expanding the term too much, in my opinion, because if we expand this term too much, then any war can be portrayed as a genocide (slippery slope). I agree genoc*de should have a high bar. 3. Hamas changed their charter later on to manipulate the world, and it seems to work! 4. Even as an Israeli, though it is hard for me to say, I think we should not include ALL 2.3 million Gazans because of the 3000 Gazans that did the horrible horrific atrocities of Oct 7th. This is a nasty situation, very nasty! 5. However, the war cannot be stopped now! Even today, missiles were launched onto the center of Israel. The objectives of the war have not been achieved and Hamas will keep being in power if we stop now completely. 6. The intense phase of the war has ended with the end of the year. So I think as long as the trajectory continues like now, less intense fighting and even an upcoming ceasefire for a hostage deal, then there should not be worries. I am pretty sure that the rate of mortality in the Gaza strip is already decreasing in the last 3 weeks or so. 7. If they want to leave, then it is not immoral to help them achieve it in my opinion. There are different context, there is a difference between a forced transfer and a willing transfer. 8. Sources claim that only between 20%-30% of Palestinians were removed by Israeli forces in the "Nakba", all the others fled by their own without meeting the Israeli forces. Additionally, so many forms of ethnic cleansing have happened to millions in the 20th century, but lots of people seem to be stuck only on the Nakba. 9. The left in America has become HYPER-critical towards their own society, so hypercritical that it might lead to the society destruction, in my opinion. 10. In every war, civilians are being killed, it sucks really bad but this is how it works. Considering the circumstances in Gaza it is even harder to minimize civilian casualties. 11. Every day that comes by, the support of Biden is not increasing but decreasing.... Highly disagree that he says that his (Biden) support grows with time. Biden said to Netanyahu that he does not support a long war in the Gaza strip and on the other hand he also pressured Israel to stop the very intense fighting, mainly by decreasing airstrikes.

Great points. I've got a full stomach on both Roee and The Professor after listening to this. As a frequenter of Roee's conversations, I already know precisely where he stands, so his (frankly leading) questions to the professor felt contrived and disingenuous. He seemed uninterested in other examples (Rwanda, Bosnia or Ukraine) or what the genocide scholarship says. On the other hand, in the second part of the conversation, I feel that professor slid into the usual liberal talking points, which Roee failed to properly push back on (is saying "what kind of genocide is it if Israel sends them aid trucks" the best argument you could muster???), but where I would have had a field day with him: 1. His axiom that a population transfer (even a willing one) is simply out of the question is a modern axiom adopted in the last 50 years or so at most, and in fact was an absolutely acceptable, and some would argue essential part of world history and possibly the best way to prevent genocide. Saying that it's just not possible is pure dogma which, I would argue, is a self-defeating moral zeitgeist that will facilitate the collapse of that same world order which has brought it about, because it imposes purist demands on a humanity that has overwhelmingly not achieved that level of peaceful coexistence. It may work for Europe (for now), but in the rest of the world, and the rest of history, it never has. 2. His dogmatic insistence that there HAS to be a political solution is part and parcel of the delusional view of well-meaning liberal Westerners. They just cannot fathom that sometimes there isn't a solution when one party has an "us or them" zero-sum world view, which is in large part enshrined in its holy scriptures. Since Israel will not give up on itself and the land is too small to allow for an additional political entity without posing an existential threat to the former, the most peaceful and humane solution is a population transfer to other Muslim states, who can EASILY absorb the Palestinians into their midst, if they only wanted to.

Agreed, I am somewhere in between Roi and the Professor, I am not as a right winger like Roi and I am not as liberal as the Professor. Anyway, I did not know that the word gen*cide is so vast that there are experts on that only. Makes me a little more worried even though I mentioned the end of the acute intense phase of the war. It makes me worried also because the world likes to accuse Israel. I hope the Israeli delegation will do a great job at this trial. @@sshender3773
