Let me see your pic, and I take da rock, I found one too that's real PRETTY in the middle of the car street!!!! I picked it up, & kept it, it was SOOOOO pretty, the rock!!!!!! It's gray and perfectly rounded and looks like a big pebble, better than a rock like this💎💎💎, much prettier!!!!!

I vaguely recall David Attenborough talking about this behaviour. From memory the female selects her mate by accepting a pebble and after that the same male keeps finding more pebbles to build up the nest. If the female rejects a male by pecking him after he lays the first pebble at her feet, he takes the pebble back and goes looking for another female, or a better pebble. Pebbles are used as nesting material because rock keeps the egg warmer than ice does. Other species of penguin select rocky areas for nesting rather than ice for the same reason.
