My mother (boomer generation) said in the’50’s,60’s &’70’s stores would be closed on Sundays and many on Mondays like hairdressers or barbershops. Places that were small family businesses. It was acceptable and people didn’t throw a fit. Absolutely remarkable

What is scary as a 58 year old is that that seems remarkable. Remember those days like yesterday. My daughters tell me often that they wish they could have grown up in the 70’s and 80’s. They love the music. Never gets old. Good times for sure.

That lasted into the 80s in some areas. I think it would be a good idea to go back to that. It doesn't have to be for religious reasons... the purpose was to give everyone one day off together. We were a lot more social then. You had to be, entertain choices were limited so we mingle with family, friends and strangers more often. Hairstylists and barbers still take Monday off. That's the small shops. The chains stay open but a lot of boutique and small shops close on Monday as their one day weekend. Then they work the other 6 days. But your mom is a little wrong, plenty of people complained in at the 70s and 80s. That's why it changed. It was consumer demand. I think it stemmed from boomers complaining. Gen X was still to young to matter. The "do you know where your children are" cracks me up. I remember being horrified they had to keep asking it. My parents started muting that part it bothered me so bad. By 10 my butt had better be ready for bed if I wanted to survive to see the outside again.

I live in the South, and let me tell you, down here a lot of places are closed on the weekend. Especially on Sunday. I grew up on the East Coast where everything was busy 24/7, then moved down South, where most jobs are 5 days a week, and I was shocked. I've been here for 12 years now, and I plan on staying here permanently. The slower pace of life, and having the time to spend with the ones you love, is amazing.

Coming from an older Gen Z, I quit a job that paid more money to get a job where I can see my wife and family more often. I speak for a lot of people in my generation when I say most of us want to do more with our life than slave away our best years to a company that would replace you as soon as you were gone. The American dream has changed and it isn’t working away your whole life; most of us want to be able to still do things with our children when we grow old since we’ve seen our parents and grandparents destroy their body with some job they did when they were our age. Money is nice but they can’t bury you with it.

@Scott Crawford If your kids don't have anything else to do then social media wins. Social media is just an extension of the kids hanging around on the corner. If your kid is raised with a soldering iron, terminal window, reloading bench, etc in front of them then they'll only use social media to learn and share what they learned (and occasionally post dank memes). It's not social media's fault that it is the default place to spend time if one has nothing better to do.

In all seriousness, you're right, there is a middle ground. We were taught that you worked because you had to, in theory for one company, and the idea was to put away for retirement and scrimp and save, buy a house, but the kids through college, and then retire and die. My father was just like this. He passed about a month ago, and if I am honest, the last few years of his life were not real comfortable. But, he did leave quite a bit for my mom. He wasn't able to take any of it when he went. So it does have me rethinking a lot of things about life.

That is because us boomers were too busy working to keep up with the joneses and turning our schools, tvs, and computer screens into baby sitters. If our children do not know basic facts about the world it is our failure as teachers. You cannot blame the student for not knowing what they do not know. It is only the wise man that knows what he does not know. We seem to have a whole bunch of Boomers that have lost any critical thinking skills they may have had and completely forgotten about how calendars and chronology works. We build fantastic narratives conflating correlation with causation and ignoring that effects have to happen after the cause not before it. As a boomer there is nothing sadder than our own refusal to acknowledge our faults and failures. I say good on Millennials for not buying into our propaganda. It gives me hope.

Training young kids (18-25) for a fairly computer intensive job, I've noticed that NONE of them take notes. Even when I emphasize to them that they need to take notes - either written or typed - they just halfass the hell out of it. And later, when they inevitably forget what the f*** they're supposed to do, they try everything they can think of before finally asking me to help them, at which point I ask them why they haven't consulted their notes. Blank stares every time. Then I have to fix all the problems they caused by f***Ing around.
@adeleennis2255

They don’t take notes because they weren’t taught how to take notes. They were taught how to bubble in for the thousands of tests their states gave them each year. It was up to their teachers or parents to make sure they had note taking skills. I thank Mr. Robertson from 7th grade social studies for teaching me how to outline. I still take notes in an outline fashion to this day. I thank Mrs. O’Connor’s 10th grade Friday vocabulary quizzes for teaching me how to study quickly. I thank my mom for having a massive pen collection which gave me the idea to color code my notes. Those two teachers and my mom were invaluable to my success. Dad gets credit for teaching me how to debate politics and to pay attention to current events.

It's a complicated thing. It seems GenZ is split into two groups. Half are smart, somewhat conservative, and understand you're not going to end up with a job that pays 100 grand right out of school, but do put more emphasis on life vs work alot better then we did. The other half run around making tik tok clips about the unfairness of having to work an 8 hour shift on a weekend. Those ones are lazy, selfish, and entitled. I'm hoping the first half will change the world and the other half continue their bizarre cult and weed themselves out of the gene pool.

It's not just the kids. For 20+ years, I've seen a lot of people get their panties in a twist about punctuality. They were never late. But these same people did as little as humanly possible for the duration of their workdays. Some turned this into an art form. ~ Then there are government workers. That's a whole new breed of lazy. ~ Don't get me wrong, work hours exist for a reason. And punctuality is important. But companies hire to keep themselves profitable. Not doing one's job is tantamount to theft, and kills the bottom line. It's hard to offer raises without money. At the same time, I've also been hired by companies for one job, only for them to add a totally separate job description on top of it. I wasn't even offered a choice. Was a raise (or other perks) extended, too? Hell no. They expected me to live at the office for a pittance. If genZ is holding these dudes accountable for that kind of garbage I'm completely on board with that.

I don't know what this woman in the news is saying. I find that the majority of Gen Z works and they work hard. I'm a Gen X and I had my own business, but temporarily had to slow it down due to Covid and some overloaded bills from it. Anyway, i have a job at a grocery store now to help with the bills and to rebuild my business, but there are a lot of Gen Z people there around 18-24 that have worked there starting at 14 with high school and they are in some good positions now. I find they have a positive attitude, are willing to learn and help out. More come into the store and work their jobs well or use the grocery store training and cash to put themselves through higher schooling after work to find other careers later. Gen Z also know how to make money on youTube, Instagram, Tik Tok and other online channels. They have more opportunity to make money than the traditional ways offered to Boomers, Gen X, and Millennials and that's a great thing. The down side is that through inflation and other financial issues, Gen Z will have to make more money in order to afford things until inflation either drops or at least stops and the economy balances out to the new standard. - but yeah, as far as Gen Z goes...they got this! - It's just a certain small group of Gen Z that truly doesn't fit in, but i think social media inflates those people more than the stable minded Gen Z because the crazy ones make for better "News", as it were.

My concern with Gen Z and Gen Alpha is the reliance on screen time and it’s consequential lack of good work ethic. My 11-year old son told me yesterday that he wants to drop out of school when he gets to high school. (Partly from listening to that song World’s Smallest Violin 🤦🏼‍♀️.) He doesn’t have a very good work ethic. We have tried so hard to instill that into him over the years, but it’s not sticking. I’m not sure what else I can do. He’s great at helping people and willing to volunteer if it’s of interest to him. But when it comes to things he doesn’t want to do, he fights it. (He’s also high-functioning autistic and ADHD, so there’s a bit more challenge.)

The world will be full of things he 'doesn't want to do', not doing things shouldn't even be an option for him. He is 11. He should be doing what YOU say and if not he shouldn't have screen time. Again, screen time YOU pay for. At the end of the day they wouldn't have a tv or a computer or a phone if you were not buying it and paying for it monthly. Your child has no boundaries, you have allowed him to do as HE pleases on your dime and on your time. Nip that in the bud or your kid will be living with you forever. Maybe get him into some Behavioral Therapy if he is ASD so you can get him to be able to function in society. I am a child therapist for the record so I am not judging, I am speaking from what I see, daily. A RBT or a BCAB would be great for him.

I think Gen-X clearly has a lot of woke leftist weirdos which I guess just got ignored over the years and I feel bad for Gen-Z in some ways because they've been brainwashed. They think the real world should accept made up pronouns/change of gender and they're the most anti-American generation.

@Scott Crawford helicopter hover over their kids making sure nothing happens to them regardless how trivial. Bulldozers push everyone else out their way to make sure their kids get the best, first, most of what they want regardless of fairness or detriment of others.

Sorry, Dadbod but all I have really seen out of gen z is whining and entitlement.

Children will throw a temper tantrum when they don’t get their way. These Gen Z individuals are also young children that never grew up. “YET”.

My concern with Gen X is the absolute lack of respect they have for anyone...sure you might find a few good apples between the sea of self righteous Narcissistic young people. But generally they cry oppressed victims for whatever reasons.... And apparently its all mens fault. Oh boy 🙄

Gen-Z is too far gone, Generation Alpha should be the focus and they need help from all this weird creepy leftist s@@t or they will be just as brainwashed as Zoomers.

Sorry I have to disagree, Gen Z has an extreme lack of knowledge of anything couple with a severe lack of work ethic. I am now forced to pick up the significant slack due to un-educated and lazy workers making my life and the lives of those around me vastly more difficult. No we are still here and we are the ones running things, if GenZ wants to have this life they speak of then they better learn to earn it.

It's weird to blame kids for the problems in society. If your trainee isn't doing well there's shared responsibility.
