We've had our geocell and gravel driveway in use for over 6 months now and have been testing out performance in the winter months. We frequently get warm spells that thaw out the drive and test the gravel and geocell in these conditions. Today we are taking a close up look at how the geocell has held up throughout the Colorado mountain winter, through snow, ice, heavy machinery and thawing cycles.

I am so glad you made a video about this! We are experiencing the same issue with our driveway on the mountains. The gravel washes out all the time. Going to order the geocell today. Please continue to share! Very helpful!

Just caught your channel this morning and your first GeoCell video caught my attention. Thanks for follow up video. Love you GSD! Sitting in the snow close to Papa as he works... LOVE IT! Can you give me some details about the dog?

Awesome! Thank you! Viggo is about 7 years old, we got him from a breeder in NC. We have a few videos of him on the channel, but I'd say many of the videos open with Viggo & myself taking a walk in the woods. He seems to appear in every video one way or another!

A drop spreader with a rough sand in it that you can quickly walk down the driveway with after the snow blowing is done. You get the grip on the icepack without needing to move a lot of gravel over the season and any sand that washes down just mixes with the normal sediment in the creeks.

I know what you mean about gravel loss, it happens. I have found that a box scraper works really well. Having hydraulic top & side links makes it easier to make adjustments on the fly. Set it so when going backwards the cutting edge is not digging in, but just slightly off the ground & the smoothing edge is floating. When dealing with ice, dig the cutting edge in, just enough to chip it & then lift up the ice & push it. This method will beat a front loader any day, less rock loss. Another side benefit of the box scraper is the smoothing edge will help pack the road.

Thanks! We have a box scraper which works really well when all is dry. Hard to change out implements when we have a ton of snow and they get buried in it. But thanks for that tip- will have to give it a try!

@@ColoradoMountainLiving nothing worse than an implement buried under the snow, or working with a pto shaft when your hands are freezing. Been there done that. My tractor doubles as my backup generator (pto powered), so this happens more than I will admit. A royal pain is all I can say.

love that geocell!...my drive is shared with a dozen or so neighbors and I used to bring in a truckload every couple years but the better the road the faster they drove and the more potholes returned. Geocell might be the answer for us. (Although the potholes do slow them down like speedbumps..lol)

Run a roller over the gravel after install. Also, if your pushing snow with your loader take a piece of 2" pvc pipe and make on cut down the length of it. Beat it on the front of your loader bucket so it has a rounded edge when plowing.

Normally don't push snow with the loader, but use it to break and scrap up the packed ice layer.

Great info! How Steep is your driveway at it"s steepest point? Hard to tell on the video. I am guessing 15-20 degrees? I have the same issue down here in Mississippi without the ice and snow just heavy rains during the spring. I might try the Geo product. You have a beautiful place! Thanks for the video.

I noticed in Colorado almost no one has asphalt or concrete driveways. I assume its because with the extreme freezing/thawing cycles, it doesn't last? Great video as always.

Probably more true for the rural areas. I grew up in Vermont and my parents had a long driveway, which they paved eventually, but with the freeze-thaw cycles, it got ruined and ended up going back to gravel.

In Oregon we lay out a thin layer of pumice out on top of the snow to maintain traction, even when it re-freezes, and that works like a charm, with the added benefit of not scrapping away the gravel... Is there ground pumice available there? Great videos, btw! Thanks for sharing.... God bless you and yours! Oh, I forgot to mention... Bear Patches? So sorry to hear that, as they can be a real problem. Be careful! Just kidding...but only just barely.

Hi there! I have an 800 foot gravel driveway in the mountains of Pennsylvania and we have a decent hill climb up. It gets incredibly icy during the winter, any tips you found to help with ice?

Id say spread some gravel, dirt, ashes, kitty litter or ice melt

A set of edge tamers will leave the gravel. they also work great on grass when scooping up dirt or the remains from splitting.

Great video, have you thought of using some salt on the driveway instead of scraping with the tractor might be cheaper than adding more gravel. Keep it up great content very interesting to see things from different parts of world.

You need edges tammers for youre bucket. That way it wont dig down and leave about half inch of what ever your scrapping.
@ColoradoMountainLiving
@ColoradoMountainLiving 3 жыл бұрын
That's been suggested before. I think we're going to get away from using the loader for scraping altogether.

Geocell, a three-dimensional form of honeycomb-like geosynthetics, has been used to reinforce bases of raodways since 1970s. Typical, the common commercial Gecoell is HDPE geocell and NPA geocell. Compared with HDPE geocell, NPA geocell has stronger capacity to improve the road performance.
