Working on or near open railway lines is among the most dangerous occupations in the industry. Due to the close proximity of train tracks, workers can inadvertently stray or begin working on an adjacent line that is still open to traffic, where they may have to jump out of the path of an oncoming train travelling at 125mph at any moment's notice.
A loss of situational awareness is cited as a leading cause of near misses and fatalities. Factors including miscommunication, fatigue and distraction can lead to individuals working on the wrong line.
Typically, safety is managed through paper-based diagrams and physical barriers, which are subject to extensive costs and human error. Tended is changing this with highly accurate geospatial technology to help workers regain situational awareness and always stay within safe working limits.
