This has been a favorite for most of my life. I have heard many of the numerous versions by so many different artists over the years, but Geoff has brought all the energy into this rendition. It is condensed into pure enjoyment. You cannot help but move to the tune as if you are riding a racing horse to either join them, or get out of the way of the stampede.

I have waiting for this analysis. I absolutely love Jennifer's reaction videos. The expert analysis combined with sheer goofiness when she fan girls it is so cute and funny. This particular song has been possibly my favorite since I was a child. My older brother (20 years older, he was in his thirties when I was a young teen) introduced me to Burl Ives version. From there I had to find every version I could find. Found over 100 versions in various languages and styles. This is my new favorite. Thank you, Jennifer!

In addition to the hand movements helping to visualize the next note to sing, I think for the video with multiple takes with Geoff singing different parts, it looks like he is actually conducting the other Geoffs to keep in time was he records each part. He records one part, then watches and sings along recording the next part, then watches and listens to the two parts together as he sings and records the third part, and so on.

“Ghost Riders in the Sky” was written in 1948 by American songwriter Stan Jones. It has been covered hundreds of times since then. It has been a hit in every decade since it came out. I was born in 1949 and I probably heard it somewhere in 1956 at 7 years old. This song made me want to be able to play it so I took up the Piano, Guitar and Banjo. Yes I was able to play it at age 8 and have played it many times since.

One of the earliest versions of this song was done by Vaughn Monroe with his big band. Another early one was by Burl Ives, folk singer best known as the narrator of the Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer cartoon. It was done in the 60s by many male singers who enjoyed success with story-songs, like Marty Robbins. Then of course the Cowboy singers, in particular the Sons of the Pioneers group. It has enjoyed periodic revivals by later rock and country artists. One of my favorites of the rock revivals was done by The Outlaws, back in the 1970s.

Stan Jones (the original composer and lyricist) wrote it in 1948, and has stated that it was based upon Native American stories told to him as a child in Arizona, so the story is at least a few centuries old.

Great reaction, Jen!! There’s a really interesting bass line when the backup singers sing “As the riders loped on by him” (about 11:05 in your video). It’s very subtle and almost sounds instrumental but I think it’s a hum. Nice! This may turn out to be one of my favorite of Geoff’s arrangements because there’s so much going on-and I never even liked this song before this video. Check out the description-Geoff usually adds some funny bits in the notes and credits but this one is funnier than most.

Love your videos, your analyses. Frankie Laine was the original singer but when I was growing up Marty Robbins was who I heard sing this song (he was one of my dad's favorite singers along with Eddie Arnold). Marty was interesting in that he had no vocal training, such natural talent. I would recommend listening to his rendition of "Ghost Riders in the Sky". You might like his song "El Paso" just for fun. The older USA country songs were basically story-telling to music.

I think it's so interesting how most of reactors don't know Ghost Riders in the Sky or In the Hall of the Mountain King, while I am so familiar with these songs, growing up with them and all of the variations other artists/composers have done. Yet I have never heard most of the pop songs that Voiceplay does, like Good 4 U or Encanto stuff. Maybe I should react for a completely different spin lol. People would be so annoyed with me going into We Don't Talk about Bruno with no clue what Encanto is. Or perhaps it would be entertaining 😅

Always, always, always enjoy your reactions to Geoff! Watching you try to match his tones (and whistling) is a hoot! Geoff doesalmost everything on his solo work. The arrangements are always his as well as the vision. Kathy helps with costumes and keeping the schedule. He sometimes uses Layne's company, Pattycake Productions. Makeup and beard wrangling are done by Rick Underwood. Eli (from Voiceplay) does his lighting and special effects when something out of the ordinary is needed. Extra camera crew is brought in (it was Layne for Way Down) if a stationary camera is not sufficient. He is the real deal and absolutely amazing. He started this one in June, so I'm not sure if he has another planned for Halloween.

I love how the ghosts are always slightly in the background vocally, with the instrumentation being equal in volume to them. It’s pretty appropriate since they are sort of faded themselves. In this one I have to say I love the clones portions as much as I do his solo. There’s something about the way those voices blend with a little bit of I think you call it dissonance. I really like that effect.

Great range with a warm presentation. Plus I so enjoy the costumes and fake beards... This man is an entertainer!!!! And speaking of talent, you have great pitch... Impressive! Talent. His low notes are so low, they are underground. Near the center of Earth.... A quick online search says the song was written in the late 1940's. And released in the 1950's..A tad before your time, love..... Oh by the way, your range is rather good also. Many of these notes you come close.. I am amazed by your ear & pitch.. Talent, girl! As someone else has pointed out Geoff has named his clones now. He started it in Way Down and now has named the extra one Daryl. I found that his diction is less clear on this. I usually find his enunciation very clear but this did sound a bit mumbled. at the start. I believe that the inspriration for the song came from old Native American legends of something similar. I love Geoff but I definitely now have a thing for the moustached version called Jeoph. (far right) Boy, he looks wicked. LOL Geoff arranges all his stuff. It's always noted in the credits below the title.

And, of course, as Halloween approaches, Voiceplay's output is going to go through the roof. They're dropping something new in about 3 hours time (2am Sydney Australia time).

Deft analysis, spot on exactamundo. This particular rendition flashes back Vaughn Monroe and Frankie Laine recordings. Song seems to have been-and remains-de rigeur. A proven time-tested staple still fresh for occasional swipe.

Great analysis Jen! You and Rob Lundquist could do a great whistling duet. My father drove us crazy with this song! Vaughn Monroe had the most popular version back then and he had the record; played it constantly. Geoff does take his Halloween seriously(sort of...). His versions of Bobby Pickett's "The Monster Mash" and Bing Crosby's "The Headless Horseman" plus this make a Halloween trilogy.

I would say the word Herd has an almost rothic R. Probably a little overflow from the south into the southwest. It sounds right for the setting/region. It's such a great mystical cowboy song! We have a popular parody of it in boy scouts called Ghost Chickens In The Sky.

"Ghost Riders" was written and first recorded in 1948 by Stan Jones, made famous by Burl Ives one year later. Today, it had been recorded more than 300 times by artist inside and outside of Country Music. Including Johnny Cash, Christopher Lee (!), the Blues Brothers, Spiderbite and The Outlaws. :)

With all these various renditions, did you notice that the order of yippee yi ay and yippee yi oh had been switched over time? Stan Jones had ay first, oh was 2nd. Modern singers are oh first, ay second

@@sureevoltz4120 I do not know all the versions... :-D But it's true, some have the ye first, others the yo. I have the song in my program too and I do the ye first, the yo second. But anyway: It's a GREAT song! :)

I’ve been wanting Geoff to do a cover of this song ever since I discovered him. I grew up listening to the Johnny Cash cover. I love songs that tell a story. Especially a rad story about ghost cowboys chasing the Devil’s herd across the sky as penance for their sins. Unsurprisingly, Geoff did it absolute justice.

Love your reactions and the way you explain the vocal techniques. I am a bass trombone player, so Geoff and Tim are right in my wheelhouse. I have one problem though. The videos you are listening to always have glitches and pop and crackle, making it hard to hear exactly what you are talking about. Your audio is perfect, so I don't know if it is the way you are adding the video, or something U tube is doing.

That was a fun one. And I am surprised how many of the reactors don't know the song. I mean, I am not THAT old.. :D And as hard as I try, there is no segway to recommend some Ayreon in this one. Maybe the ghost-theme as a link to Transitus, but that would be a whole album to get the story... Have a nice day and I'm looking forward to your other Spooktober videos!

Not all of the reactors are from the United States which is probably where it is most commonly heard. I’m not even sure they would’ve heard it in New York. But being a West Coast gal I heard it most of my life.

@@janetdw I get that. But I'm from Germany and not even a country fan. And even here at least the Johnny Cash version is well known. That said, I had music nerds around me most of my life and my music taste was always "special" :D

On of the OTHER reaction pages, it was explained this one took a long time, the producer Geoff hired, had to leave for another project, so Geoffs wife took over to finish the last few hours, with the marks for all the Geoffs and Fx. Geoff was exhausted after this one

This song has been around since 1948, written by Stan Jones and covered by such legends as Marty Robins and Johnny Cash. This rendition by Geoff introduces this classic to a new generation, such as yourself. Geoff's arrangement reminds me of Marty Robins and I think Geoff would do well covering more of his Western / Gunfighter ballads.
