This was filmed at Pattycake Productions- twice, as it turns out. The first time, Geoff had a makeup artist in to assist, and as he told his Patreon, they missed the mark and accidentally made a horror film. So they had to reshoot the next day, but the makeup artist couldn't reschedule and so Kathy (Geoff's wife, and the dead lady in the video) did the makeup instead. And trust me, this is the better video- he released a behind the scenes video on Patreon showing the former shoot and what they needed to correct. And he did use a choreographer for this (the BTS has a funny clip of Geoff practicing the dance while barbecuing), and personally, I love the dance they created.

Re your comments around 9:50 about Geoff starting to work on this in the summer, he actually put Monster Mash together remarkably quickly. He put a poll out to patrons on Sep. 6th to ask for Halloween song suggestions, then released the video on Patreon Sep. 30th. He arranged/filmed (twice, since the first version of the video didn't work)/produced/edited the whole thing in a little under a month. The man works fast, which is extra impressive considering he does it all himself (with production managing assistance from his wife).

Tim Foust of Home Free has pretty close to the same range as Geoff, and has three songs that I can think of off the top of my head that show his higher range well: a cover of Brooks & Dunn’s hit “My Maria” with Austin Brown, a cover of Cam’s “Mayday” with Home Free, and "Snow Globe” with Home Free, which he co-wrote.

The 4 main dance steps which get more elaborate as the song progresses: Arms out (Frankenstein's monster), arms back claws up (Wolfman), arm in front of face as if holding a cape (Dracula), arms wrapped around torso (The Mummy). And the 'backup Geoffs' are Dracula, Wolfman and Frankenstein's monster. They appear jerky because he recorded them while the track was playing at a slower speed, then when he replays them in the main video here with the track at normal speed, they're just slightly faster-looking, but keeping the time (basically, the visual equivalent of how they did the Alvin and the Chipmunks voices and their accompanying tracks). And yep, that note you focused on at the end, it's a D1. Also, the corpse bride is Geoff's real-life bride Kathy, just lying there unnoticed the entire time. Oh, and a fun detail: As he begins to dance with her and your attention's on them on the left, all the way over on the right, "Frankie's" doing a bit of flossing... :)

He mentions Dracula, Wolfman, and I think the other is his monster. The monster does the Floss at the end, Hilarious. Also Geoff has said “Did you pick up on the "la la la" section? It's Bach's toccata and fugue in d minor, just shuffled and swung”. At the end, there is a hint of Fur Elise. :) Just another bit of Geoff's genius. He had a choreographer for this and the dance represents, slashing, strangling, being wrapped in the cloak, and possibly a bat or a mummy for the other bit. I think perhaps Wolfman had fleas. But who knows. :) When Geoff does "son" you can see Kathys legs move, perhaps she was laughing too.

@@DennisKovacich Yup, Bela unexpectedly died (thankfully not on-set) after filming all his close-ups and saying all his lines for Plan 9 from Outer Space. Tony Wakim was a baritone for VP and wanted to get into productions so he and Layne bought Pattycake Productions. Tony's full into it, Layne is split between the studio and VoicePlay and probably another couple of things. The Geoff clones are Dracula, Wolf Man, and Dracula's son. The dance moves start off with Frankenstein (arms out straight), Wolf Man (arms bent with the claws up), Dracula (right arm raised and bent across the collar bone to support his cloak), The Mummy (arms wrapped around his torso). Love that Wolf Man has fleas. If you saw Drunken Sailor by VP the drunken sailor was Bucky who for a short time back before the name VoicePlay, was 4:2:Five. He did the choreography for Monster Mash, and occasionally sings minis with them. He is also a voice actor with Disney. He has a couple of videos on How To Sing Really Low.

Baritenor here. Regarding ströbass, it's modal voice, not at all subharmonic in nature. It's something that I don't have in my voice, at all. It doesn't exist in it. I got very sick a couple of months ago, sore throat and all, which hadn't happened in maybe 15 years. So for 5-6 days, my voice dropped to that of a full-on true (low?) bass. I not only gained lows (easy modal B1), but lost my highs (anything above a C4, which is usually easy). During that week, I got to experience what ströbass was, first hand. As painful as it was, I tried singing normally during that time, and it required actual effort for me to actually keep my usual timbre. What was happening when I sang "normally", was that around Eb2-D2, which had become very easy and very resonant notes (not usually the case), there was a change in timbre. My voice switched from a smooth colour, my usual smooth colour to a much more raspy/fry-like sound. I wasn't doing a vocalized fry (subharmonics), I wasn't doing anything special, it just… changed colour. And I was still singing in modal voice. Looking back at it, I should have recorded it. Then I progressively got better, my voice reverted back to normal, and that register completely disappeared. I am not able to emulate the sound nor the feeling, even on good days, it is completely unique and I would say impossible to fake. If it's in one's voice, then it is there, and it is normal, but if it isn't, it's impossible to properly describe or emulate.

I'm glad you reacted to this. I'm curious. Would strohbass (sp?) be the bass version of a falsetto? Being old enough to remember when Bobby Pickett first released it in the early 60's, all of us kids loved it. There are a couple references that modern audiences won't realize. First of all, "monster mash" was based on the "mashed potato", an actual dance at the time. Second, Bobby's version heavily emphasized voices and facial affects of Boris Karloff and Bela Legosi. While their monster movies came out in the 1930s, we had seen them on TV when the independent stations would show old movies on Saturday afternoons (and a few years later, late Saturday nights when horror hosts became popular). Wisely, Geoff discards a lot of the aping of Boris and Bela, because folks today just know parodies of parodies of parodies of them.

lol Bela Legosi. Some friends and I watched "Plan 9 from outerspace" last night as part of our annual Schlocktoberfest, which Bela Legosi stars in... sort of. Parts of it are actually him. But because he died part-way through filming, other shots of him are actually someone else in his costume but holding the cape in front of their face so you "can't tell" it's not Bela Legosi..

What is everyone’s range here? From the lowest fry to the highest falsetto note. F1 to around F5.

The base D! note was a Chest Note, NOT a growl. He's one of the few bass singers who can hit those notes as Chest Notes. If you view his oogie boogie man song, the carries a solid F1 as the last note. Growl Notes are never solid and lack the richness of tone. Your wind runs out very quickly with growls.

hey Ken! I love your reactions and always wait impatiently for your Geoff/Voiceplay reactions. I see you liked this video (as we all did). however, I feel your analysis was a bit sparse this time. I really come to you for more than a mere manly giggle, you know ;-) I value your opinion and your insight. a bit more effort into deconstructing the song and pointing to interesting moments would be appreciated. ;-)
