Pouring the tea from the tea pot into the cup is what makes the tea taste better. Pouring the tea aerrates the liquid and allows oxygen to bond with flavor components. Oxidation also helps to reduce the tannins which is why tea made in the cup has that walnut back-of-the-tongue mouth feel, and tea poured from a proper pot has a more fresh, brighter flavour. People buy these special little funnels for wine that do the same thing. The special funnel adds oxygen as you pour wine into the glass, gets rid of sulfites and helps the wine “open” more. So Geoff is totally right in saying the tea pot is more tea-y and has a better mouth feel. Well done Geoff.

Fun video. There is however clearly a metodological flaw with the test in that she makes two cups in the cup and one in the pot. You can tell that Geoff decides on the basis that thera are two cups that tastes similar and one that tastes different, therefore the one that tastes different must be the one made in the pot. Still impressive to be able to taste any difference at all though.

@@tincanboat He said that *after* identifying that the blue one was the odd one out. If Geoff could _really_ tell whether tea was made in a pot or a cup - the original claim - then he would have been able to tell immediately on tasting the first cup.

@noahgodard3338 3 жыл бұрын
@@Grim_Beard I disagree. I don't think it's so much about being able to identify the flavor of each independently, as it is about showing that there is a discernable difference when comparing the two, which there was.

Tea made in different quantities will taste different as they are made in different amounts and it is near impossible to match their strength. If he could make out four or more cups, I would be more convinced. Also, he should not be able to know the sample ratio, and should not be able to see his assistant when guessing.

Coming back to this video after several years I decided to try a similar test - 1 loose tea in pot, 2 tea bag in pot, 3 tea bag in cup. All with the same tea. 1 was best, 2 was 2nd best, and 3 was definitely 3rd and it was easy to tell the difference.

Many moons ago when I worked as a marine radio operator (shore based) it was my turn to make the brew. We had just switched from loose tea, in a big pot, to teabags in a big pot. One of the chaps, a Brit, complained the teabag brew was awful and asked for "proper tea" next time. Well, next brewup I made the tea, with teabags and added a wee sprinkle of loose tea to the pot. Out I go from the kitchen to the main room, pushing the tea trolley with all the usual requirements aboard. I poured (name redacted) a cuppa and it looked just what he ordered, because a few stray loose tea leaves ended up floating in his cup. I asked (name redacted) if the tea was to his satisfaction this time, he said it was. I asked him if he preferred his tea this way, he said it was. Suppressing a grin I lifted the teapot lid and invited him to observe the contents. What he saw floating about was six teabags, along with a few stray tea leaves. He never complained about his tea again.

Ah! But how about loose leaf tea versus tea in bags? That's a different challenge, as you can alter the amount of tea and the amount of water. Speaking of which: I can totally see why a pot of tea made with a single UK teabag is preferable to a cup/mug of tea made with the same teabag, as the amount of tea leaves in the bag is suited for the pot rather than the mug (i.e. the mug will be too strong and/or stew too easily).

When my dad started working in a Bank in the mid 1960s when he was 16, one of his first jobs was to make the tea for everybody. One manager in particular specified that the pot had to be warmed prior to the hot water being poured in. My dad though this was a little absurd and thought he could just skip this step and the manager wouldn't notice. When he gave him his teapot and cup and took a sip, my dad says the manager, paused, looked him in the eye and asked if he had warmed that pot. My dad said he couldn't lie - rumbled!

Since tea in the pot was made first, it is also the coldest. Especially since it was not made in the same vessel as it was consumed from (an old trick with pouring hot liquid from one cup to another and then back couple of times). So it's temperature could've been closer to enjoyable, as the result. Also, temperatures of those cups gave away the sequence they were made in. And you can definitely hear the difference between pouring water into mug and pot

You have to boil the kettle to oxygenate the water, otherwise it doesn't taste the same (apparently that's the reason, I believe). Making a cup of tea in the microwave, for example, will always taste terrible. The best t bags around are either Sainsburys basics brand or M&S extra strong for a bit of a kick.

When making tea in a mug, people either don't leave the bag in long enough or squeeze the bag so much it gets too bitter. I prefer pot but if making in a mug, swish the bag around in a small bit of hot water and discard the water then fill the cup with boiling water, wait 10-20 secs, do not squeeze the bag too much when removing. It is an extra step but makes the tea less bitter and better flavour.
